For some time I've been interested in the condition of one of the nicer circular paths in the Carnic foothills after the extensive fire a few years ago. By this I mean the ascent on path 619 from Cadermazzo to Cuel de la Bareto and descent on path 620 to the beautiful village Patoc.

The mentioned path 619 from Cadermazzo to Beretka is currently a model maintained path (condition October 2018). Throughout its entire length it is mowed (1200 elevation gain) and cleared of all rubbish!!! Incredible. It is like that all the way to the branch to Baretko, riddled with huge WW1 tunnels. Further towards Dunja path 619 is really abandoned and that's probably the purpose of the slightly misleading markers at the start in Cadermazzo.

Continuation to Patoc on path 620 is a greater challenge. The fire left deep wounds that won't heal for decades. Erosion is rapidly eroding the beautiful path that almost horizontally crosses sheer slopes. For now it's passable without special difficulties, but any stronger storm can radically change the situation. Most likely due to pronounced exposure and erosion it will be abandoned in the near future. Not for the dizzy.

The mentioned traverse is for mountain epicures and the current situation allows an unforgettable experience. Lots of joy on the path nasmeh

Starting point for Cuel de la Bareto ... 46°25*32.4" N 13°19*00.7"E

Recommended starting point for the entire loop (info from ZS) ... 46°24*33.0" N 13°18*41.7"E

Start across the bridge by the old road towards Tolmezzu. Parking lot is 200 m ahead in the direction of Kluž1
After crossing the bridge we turn right and after about 10 minutes encounter this sign2
Cadermazz = two collapsed houses :)3
Sign for impassability of path 619 in Cadermazz. The sign is slightly misleading as a well-maintained path leads to Beretka. Further to Dunji the path is destroyed.4
Over the steep step the army has made steps5
I haven't experienced this yet. The entire path to Cuel de la Barete was recently mown6
Path 619 runs through incredible passages but that's nothing compared to the path 620 section7
In places there are smaller non-exposed screes passable without any difficulty8
In the summit part autumn sun warmed us but it no longer reaches the lower part9
Sign for Cuel de la Bareto. From here path 619 to Dunji is no longer discernible and probably completely abandoned10
View towards the central Karnic Alps11
... and towards Reziji12
Cuel de la Bareta with Montažem on the right side and Naborjetskimi mountains on the left13
Despite the late date, we were at the summit in summer clothes :)14
Despite the rainy forecast, one could see far, far.15
A small hole hides the incredible dimensions of the underground army shelters.16
Complete surprise, I've never seen anything like it. The tunnels are gigantic, several meters high.17
The stairs are masterfully concreted.18
Comparison of tunnel sizes.19
Year of manufacture. Back then there was no made in China yet :)20
The tunnels follow one another for at least half a kilometer. The dimensions are incredible, the construction and preservation top-notch...21

We continue on path 620.23
Soon a different, wilder character of the path appears.24
Former military mule track leads to Patoc village.25
The environment is wild, passable thanks to the path.26
Water snapshot :)27
The 620 is of course not mown like the 619, but has special charm.28
Some sections are markedly exposed.29
We frequently encountered landslides.30
The transverse, almost level section of path 620 will most likely be discontinued in the future due to erosion31
Some crossings require special attention32
Glance. Below on the left side is a drop33
Some greenery softens the gloomy impression of scorched pines34
You realize the extent of the fire only when you are already above Patoc35
621 runs along even more scorched slopes36
Along switchbacks towards the valley. No more exposure, greenery is returning37

Bagi, is that critical (burnt) section of the path between the junction below Bareto and Potok village well marked? On the new Tabacco map (Canal di Ferro 2018) it's no longer there...
Second, is it possible to shorten the path before the end in Bela valley to the right, directly towards Cadermazza, without going to Kluže?
Thanks!

@bbugari1... path 619 is officially abandoned and is no longer on the list of maintained paths ... http://www.cai-fvg.it/sentieri-cai-fvg/settore-6-alpi-giulie/
The real situation is of course as I described it. Up to the saddle a little below Beretka, 619 is an excellent path, further towards Dunja it is no longer traceable. The entire described path, including 620, can be followed and is solidly marked. Getting lost is practically impossible nasmeh.

I don't know the direct passage to Cadermazz, nor have I noticed any visible junction anywhere. There is however a transverse pathlet marked on the attached map. A big question is its current condition. It should branch off right before the only little bridge crossing Rio Patoc. Later the shortcut is certainly no longer possible due to the deep stream gorge and steep slopes above the valley.

@bbugari1 - on this path drawn on the map (which bagi attached above), we shortened the descent back to the starting point last year end of October. The path is quite well traceable, somewhat "ruined" in places, secured with a loose cable in one or two spots... Attaching some photos for better idea.
This is how the turn-off is marked (path goes right uphill) - at approx. 500 m altitude in a bend just before the footbridge1
Trail marked with red or orange dots, slightly collapsed in a few places.2
...otherwise mostly nicely trodden...3
Here we came directly to the cycle path before the tunnel (last red dot) and from here it's only maybe 10 minutes to the starting point.4

Nice tour Bagi, congrats! I did this tour a couple years before the fire in a somewhat extended version. Started at Planina Pecol and via Via alta 621 crossed above Patoc village
where I continued towards Cuel de la Bareta on path no. 621 to the junction where the path ascends to the saddle under Bareta. Visited Bareta and planned to descend to Dunja on path no.619 which joins path no.651 in Dunja and ascends via Dunja valley to Rudni vrh. Unfortunately a large landslide that happened a couple days earlier blocked that part and I returned to the junction where I descended to Cadramazza and continued along the abandoned railway to Dunja and via Dunja valley to the branch for Strma peč. There I camped by the stream and next day ascended via ferrata Norina to Strma peč and descended to the car at Planina Pecol. Nice tour, insanely wild ambience, incredible beauty in solitude and wilderness... The landslide deprived me of a nice piece of wilderness and extended my tour. Sadly the now deceased Igor Zlodej tried that landslide part soon after from the opposite direction and struggled to get through-since then that part of the path is no longer maintained. I needed about 26 hours total for this tour and it remains in my memory as one of the nicest wild tours in this end of the Julians, highly recommend to all lovers of solitude and wild beauty, unfortunately can't photo-document it.
On this tour I spotted the wonderful peak between Clapadorija and Rio Saline, Jof di Miez, which I visited two years ago-royal tour!!! Best regards and safe steps, Sly

After more than five years back up here on Tuesday; this time we started from the state road near Kluž. Path 619 from Cadramazza nicely passable and marked better than most trails on Kanin - on our side of course velik nasmeh. Same on trail 620, path easily traceable and nicely passable almost to Forcella Galandin. Consequence of the big fire and erosion are newly formed numerous narrow gullies, 4-5m wide in steep scree. There you can't afford a slip zavijanje z očmi, as you end up at the foot of Sflamburg. In memory I had enjoyable walking from there to Patok, but now it's no longer so. Erosion consequences visible everywhere, pines practically all dried up. Wild undergrowth and grass in places mrk pogled slowly overgrowing the trail, here and there piled fallen dry trees... Arrival in Patok means real relaxation and another longer stop, as there too - like at the top - you can't just pass by. We descended towards Kluž and before the little bridge (when trail already turns left - bridge not yet visible from there) turned right a couple m up. The little trail is more sniffed than seen but after a couple m pink trace visible - remainder of paint on stone. Attention after 5min split of these "little trails" - on the pine is the only red-white-red mark on metal plate. Here keep left and soon on steep slope above AC at tunnel we reach the bike trail mežikanje.
The steps and path are still perfectly fine.1

When you've looked a bit at your home mountains, curiosity and others' impressions eventually take you to the Western Julians. Peaks from Planina Pecol are a logical continuation for many, but what's behind the wide wall of Montaž and how mighty its appearance from the other side above Dunja, that so enchanted the poet Kugy?

A good overture to this more or less solitary and very wild world offers precisely the table-like summit Cuel de la Bareta or Baretka and although at the very tail of the Julians, with its height (1522m), (non)difficulty, easy exploration and gradual getting to know the surroundings it can mean a new beginning.

On the path to Baretka itself nothing much has changed in two months from the last post and previous ones. The small rest area by the road 2km before Kluže and a bit after the bridge over river Bela is easy to find, once crossed and turned right you soon head up the slope on marked and exemplarily maintained path 619 into the narrow gorge of Cadramazzo stream. Steep, wild and quite narrow understandably in shade, but on the mule track with views of the picturesque stream and cliffs on its other side you quickly ascend to the junction where right turns the path to Potok village. Here we'll go circular back, to the top it's still half hour on wider and gentler path. A bit below the summit sun finally caresses us, the summit itself with table, bench and interesting obelisk beside remains of cableway and artillery fortification drilled under the entire summit part offers really wonderful views in all four directions. In the distance Montaž reigns and I already understand Kugy a bit better. But not only Montaž, right thrilled by Strma peč, left by the vista of Naborje mountains from Dunja peak to Poldašnja špica, on the other side Lopič and prominent Zuc dal Bor in Karnics, finally closest admire the wild and hard-to-cross world of Joveti. In sunny and warm weather it's all idyll, plans ahead easier forged.

We return to junction with path 620 towards Potok village (2h) and if once this was a route for mountain romantics and dreamers now it's more for adventurers. Predecessors described the situation well, on most parts towards the village better be careful (especially at the landslide when crossing Fontanis stream), as erosion also with fire's help among once mighty pines rapidly erodes the flat panoramic path above precipitous slopes below Sflamburg. Nevertheless worth doing the loop above deep precipices where the path digs into many gullies and gulleys, especially towards the end because of picturesque Potok with nice church rising above it. Along Potok stream bed descend towards Reklanica, a bit before the little bridge with a bit of attention find that right branch that quite shortens the way back on bike trail. This path section traceable without issues, technically no special features, two cables in between. Who (off season) seeks solitude and something new will likely be thrilled by the wonderful and locally wild tour in this remote world.

Ascent done from Cjadramac, descent to Patoc and a bit lower via shortcut to start. Path from start to summit o.k., from summit or junction below it to Patoc however desperate overgrowth. Already right after Fontanis stream hard to pick up the path as everything overgrown, also relatively exposed, further towards Forca Galandin sometimes no path at all. With great caution I managed all overgrown and exposed spots relatively safely, helped myself with whatever came to hand: branches, grass, rocks that didn't wobble etc. Also from Forca Galandin to Patoc path locally overgrown and less traceable, but no more slip danger. Shortcut to start I found easily, some before little bridge right uphill branches clearly visible little trail that quickly brings you to overgrown gully where cable helps. Further path not hard to follow, sometimes mark on tree, elsewhere red blotch on rock (bolli rossi). Despite overgrowth the tour etched deep in memory, as here are romantically wild ends of which there are fewer and fewer. nasmeh

Condition probably not better than a year ago, rather the opposite, winter definitely did its damage, some storms last year too. On top of everything you have to cross all fallen spots twice if you go to Baretka from Patoc, so twice consciously risk it giving way under you zavijanje z očmi

Checked yesterday, standard circular tour Cadramazzo-Bareta-Patoc-Cadramazzo.
In Cadramazzo there's still a misleading sign pointing to Patoc and Raccolano, as if the path is normally passable. Likewise at the junction below Bareta there's still a sign for Dunjo, even though that path no longer exists, and a sign for Patoc even though the path is closed (yes, there's a sign that this path is impassable).
From that junction below Bareta to crossing the Fontanis stream the path is wonderful and easy, you have to go there and drink clean water by the stream in wild surroundings.
On the other side of the stream there's a slightly harder ascent (descent would be even harder), then the path goes "normally" for a long time, even when it reaches the fire scar.
At one point I thought I'd soon reach Forcella Galandin, but then serious problems started because before the notch you have to overcome several earth slides in a row.
When I stopped at the notch to take photos, a few meters in front of me and above me there was a bad rockfall slide. If I hadn't stopped before... eek
In fact this part of the path is really DEADLY DANGEROUS and I advise against it, and even after Forcella Galandin there are several dangerous spots.
Then I descended to Patoc and via shortcut (which again has some tricky spots) back to the car on SS 13.
Not attaching photos because they're the same as with the namesake. mežikanje

Romantic beauty in indescribable wilderness between Reklanica and Dunjo. Ascent via 619, descent via 620 - the latter marked as sentiero inagibile, which suggests caution and cat-like steps are not superfluous. Despite this and perhaps precisely because of it, it's a world that doesn't leave you indifferent, quite the opposite... new plans for new explorations are already forming in your head... nasmeh
