It had drawn me to Pokljuka for a long time, but I reached it only on Saturday, 22.8.2015, thanks to public transport. Since last year, a tourist bus runs from Bled and from Bohinjska Bistrica during the summer school holidays. Unfortunately only on Saturdays and Sundays.
Shortly after five I took the train to Bohinjska Bistrica, where I had to wait another 45 minutes for the bus to Pokljuka. At 8.30 I arrived at Rudno polje. Too late for longer hikes, especially in the hottest summer days. This time there was already a hint of autumn in the air, no humidity and annoying insects, ideal for walking. Despite the forecasted morning clarity, there were quite a few clouds around the peaks; the highest only peeked out from under its cap at noon.
From Rudno polje I went past Blejska koča na Lipanci to Debela Peč. I returned via Brda, Lipanski vrh and Mrežce. It tempted me further to Debel vrh and Viševnik. Since I didn't know how much time I would need for that part, I rather went to Blejska koča and along the already known path to Rudno polje. From there by bus to Bled and on the train.
The path to Blejska koča na Lipanci is well marked, except under the Viševnik lift, where the mark is only somewhat higher by the road at the junction for Triglav and it can be missed if you take the path along the lift. Further, all junctions are signposted for Lipanca, from the gravel pit the path is marked. Only at the junction just above the hut, where the path to Viševnik and Mrežce branches off, I missed a sign. The forest path didn't thrill me at first, but upon seeing the rest it wasn't so bad. Mainly due to solitude, as I met only one Hungarian couple on the return. Most who drive to Pokljuka by car choose closer accesses to Blejska koča.
Further to Debela Peč is busier, on the return via Brda, Lipanski vrh and Mrežce I met only a handful of hikers (excluding those already at the peaks themselves). The nicest part of the path to me was over Brda, the workout from Lipanski vrh to Mrežce I would easily skip. Well-fixed cables ease the ridge crossing (descent from Lipanski vrh maybe less strenuous for those with long legs), the peaks were less interesting to me due to similar views than Debela Peč and Brda. Good side of this path is that it is less visited. Maybe better in reverse direction.
Walking time with short photo stops: Rudno polje-Debela Peč: 3.20, Debela Peč-Brda-Lipanski vrh-Mrežce: 2.00, Mrežce-Bl.Koča-Rudno polje: 2.25, total 7 hours and 45 min, with longer stops 8 hours and 45 minutes. This time I dawdled less than usual and approached the markings on the mountain signs.
