Dogs in mountain huts

Print
doripiki25. 08. 2013 16:46:47
Regularly read Hribe.
I've never come across a topic about dogs in mountain huts in Slovenia. Really curious why a dog isn't allowed in a hut!?? That's why we prefer going to foreign mountains with my husband, where we're always welcome with our buddy. Let me explain, we have a very calm dog that obeys on command and doesn't bark. It's small breed (miniature pinscher) and always on leash. Used to cleanliness, since it lives with us in the house.
Whenever we've asked caretakers for overnight with dog, always the same answer in the hallway or outside in the shack. But that's not acceptable for my dog since it's too attached to me.
Exactly because of that we go to foreign mountains. And probably we're not the only ones. We have really nice mountains, which for us aren't accessible except day trips.

The mutt really won't do anything to anyone. Shame there's no understanding with us, maybe should ask PZS if they think to do something about it. A dog wouldn't bother me if trained and tidy.

You won't get an answer up here, because the hut keepers/clubs decide about it..or idk who.. But with the question you poked the hornet's nestbig grin so expect heavy debate of dog lovers and haters, why yes and why nowinking ...by the way.. don't worry too much, since basically every Slovenian hill is reachable in one day. lp

Yes, it can be a hornet's nest if comments too subjective. big grin Objectively though, the hutkeeper would judge each time if the dog is trained and clean, that's utopia. Utopia also the claim "the mutt really won't do anything to anyone". rolling eyes That can claim only who hasn't been bitten by a dog yet say. I'm against dogs in huts, but consider myself a dog lover, I have a dog too. Here, if nothing else because some people have allergy to dog hair.

Maybe this: dog is not a house pet, its nature is life outdoors and there it feels best. If so retrained and pampered that can't sleep outside, then such dog not for mountains and better stay in the block. Similar for people.

Also valid is the hutkeeper's risk question, if say the keeper misjudges the dog and it starts barking in the middle of night hearing some unusual noise for it... Would the keeper freak out? Probably the guests from that night never return to the hut.

People are allergic to dogs with fur and not to dogs with hair, there's a difference.
That dog belongs outside also not fully holds, because depends breed to breed, depends what it was made for (not all shepherds).

I too have a dwarf pinscher (mini pinch) and it's not that too pampered, it's such breed loyal to owner and attaches to him more than maybe some other breed.
Like at @doripiki mine too is used to cleanliness and well trained and calm and I'd gladly take it on a two-day tour.

Whenever there's debate about dogs in huts, I remember the movie Sreča na vrvici, where in a clip it's shown how it would be if every household in a block, settlement had a dog on the balcony, catastrophic. Similarly I imagine in a hut when every owner wants a dog next to them, I believe owner of a Great Dane or shepherd loves his dog just as much as pinscher owner, so just imagine full hut of owners with dogs with their snouts on table or bench where you'll later eat your ričet, or they'll fight and bark among themselves, you'll trip over its tail, or maybe caretaker with tray of food.... well, if dogs are wet, you know they smell, so I really can't imagine all that, well I have a shepherd myself and know well where its place is, next to me outside, safe from other hikers and yes I love him very much too mežikanje

I think it's more about overnighting. Haven't seen a dog on the table yet.
And comparing to the movie... a bit too pessimistic you described this nasmeh
And I don't know why it would be catastrophic if there was a dog in every house (almost everyone has a dog nowadays anyway)

Last year in Hut at Triglav Lakes we got a friendly offer that we can overnight with dogs in the winter room (little hut next to the main hut).

Abroad it's completely dependent on hut to hut. In some (especially private) allowed, in others not. In Germany (where I just wandered) generally not allowed, but there's a list of 'dog-friendly huts' where you can bring dog inside. In the hut at Hochstauefen for ex. it explicitly said dogs no entry. Same in many Italian huts (probably not allowed in all owned by CAI), well Italians as Italians of course violate it massively and seems caretakers don't mind but haven't seen them in sleeping areas.

Personally doesn't bother me if someone overnight with dog in hut but alone (or couple or family) with own dog in own room. No entry to other areas, corridors and hallway just transit for dog from room to hut door and back. Otherwise don't know what's the big deal if dog sleeps outside. Won't be the end of it for one night.

Reasons why dogs not in hut same as why they must be leashed. Not just that some fear them but also hygiene reasons, don't know how owner treats it and allergies mentioned too,...

That comparison from movie Sreča na vrvici is spot on. Yes, as kid I was of course on Matic's side even though I feared dogs. Today I understand those adults, even though having dog in apartment block today isn't a big deal anymore.

To all who smartly talk about who decides if dog allowed in mountain hut I suggest you read the law or PZS regulation! And about the fine amount for PD or hut caretaker. Wish you lively debate!

So. I'm also a dog owner. But can't imagine how that would look. Outside can't sleep - short fur, inside would be weird. She's a terrier, which means very attached to owner, other people can be reason for barking - haven't figured out by what rule some OK, others notjezen. Think it wouldn't work. At least I'd have to constantly calm her. That's not really rest. Not for people, not for dog.
So we go mainly day trips. And less organization trouble. Need to provide dog food (who carries and preparesjezik?) and water (few liters...velik nasmeh).

I suggest when planning new or renovated bivouacs think also about some common sleeping place for dogs (and all necessary paperwork that must accompany such proposal before public discussion.
And also with membership fee could have special category.nasmeh

Why so discriminatory? What about hamsters, cats, parrots.............. reptiles are popular too

Since you mentioned reptiles, I always take my python with me, and haven't had problems in any hut yet, don't know, the guy somehow knows when to calm down zadrega.
I think it's all about upbringing.

In Tončkov dom on Lisca dogs are also welcome.. entry is "forbidden" only to the kitchen and large dining room, while elsewhere they can be.

Hello,
I'm curious about the options or if anyone has tried something similar, in case you can't overnight in the hut with dog, to sleep outside in front of the hut with dog in tent? As far as I know you're quite limited especially in TNP area, but are there exceptions? (e.g. in front of Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih)

Ginko, if you are there in peak season and arrive only in evening, it can happen that you are forced to it.zmeden
