Extreme mountain runs - alpinistic running

Climbers, especially alpinists know what caliber Steck is. Heckmair route, named after one of the first ascensionists, is still relatively hard route today, both because of length (1800m), and because of considerable objective dangers (mainly falling rocks, waterfalls and ice. First ascensionists needed three days for it). 20 years ago among others Slavc Svetičič soloed it. He needed 26 hours for it, but he did first winter solo ascent of another, a bit more tricky... route (and we know what caliber Slavc was). Knez presoloed it (same Heckmair) in 1982 in 6h!?! Then Steck came and set unreachable times. What he does in front of camera he actually does more or less through the whole ascent. But he's so good at it, so damn good, that it looks so easy, as if he's not ascending icy slope that's almost or vertical, and that at difficulties V-VI (M5). Even a rope of two good alpinists would get nicely fu...

.. they entered history. Judging if this pays off or not... is hard to believe those for whom every top achievement is nonsense. I don't know why it's necessary to always bash those who think differently? If there are exceptions even more so. Unless... with that it's necessary to always emphasize how all others are dumb, "we" are the only smart enough? Anyway klm is totally right, just mixed up hours with Slavc a bit. Slavc did classic route on Eiger 21.7.84 and needed 8 hours for it, Harlin route he climbed 14-15.1.90 and really used 26 hours for it. It was the first winter repeat though. And yeah.. sadly Slavc is no longer among us, so some will have even more reason to say something.

About reasons why some start and judgment by others if it's sensible and worth it - really not worth discussing, everyone looks from their own angle. And about why some see every top achievement as nonsense. Our yellow press and ignorance play a big part, as they lump it all together and turn every nonsense into a top achievement. Then on TV we see Čolnik and Bernarda Jeklin talking in studio at the same time with our hefty plodder and some real top athlete, who due to poorer self-promo rhetoric and crowing of retired women's magazine editor looks like a fool, plodder like superman. What viewers or readers think, nobody cares anyway.
