On Saturday we two also went to check larches in this area, they were and still are wonderful of course. Start Bodental, after initial scrambling we managed to get from one gully to path from Vgrizova planina to Celovška koča, north sides paths slightly icy, past Celovška koča to Mačenska planina beautifully framed with yellow larches, then west side to Ovčji vrh, magnificent views, due to wind we found our little lee, fed ravens and ourselves, dozed up there without..(fleeces) in sun, then down east side, spotted nice little ridge leading to Vrata saddle, left path and went right up there, found some old imaginary track and husband hunting trophy , at end past beautiful hunting hut on Vgrizova planina back to Bodental. Gorgeous.

Was there yesterday starting below Tinčkova hut on the other side then along the path close to the saddle (before the hut) to the summit. This path is nicer than the western one, which I hiked a few years ago. From Tinčkova I went through Zagon, past "Bivak 1" etc..

The first and second pictures also need additional explanation: 1. cross on Sheep Peak, 2. Klagenfurt. Otherwise it was really nice up there these days. Just below Sheep Peak summit on Saturday during lunch a flock of crows joined me of course. One was so tame, it kept jumping on me all the time while hunting crumbs. The little model I of course well immortalized.

tones, however you turn it Celovec is in (independent) Austria, hence Klagenfurt.. and even Sheep Peak is in the same country, so alas Geissberg.. Pity for our modest wishes. It happens you meet a mountaineer who knows quite a few words in Slovenian, but quickly it's clear knowledge of "pure" Austrian German will help you.. (damn it)!

Then we also speak and write: Trieste, Gorizia, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Budapest,... Also on motorway signs only foreign: Villach, Trieste, Graz,... nothing Slovenian! And city pronunciations also foreign: 'Pari', 'Landn', 'Strasbur', 'Brisel', 'Minhen'... For the last two watch how to roll that u properly French and German!

Majda, again a nice trip report with beautiful photos; you manage to always have such a picturesque cloudy sky...

The peak has several names. Besides Sheep Peak also Kozjak or in German Geissberg or Kosiak. Hoping for nice weather I set off to it today from the Rute valley (Bärental). The road is plowed to the junction at Stouhütte (Hut under Stol?, about 950m), to the summer parking there's still a good two kilometers and about 200m elevation, which I of course did on skis. Continued on the road to Celovska Hut, here and there also on some shortcut. Above Mačenska Planina (Matscacher Alm) I continued in the direction of the path that goes along the southwest ridge to the top. The road path is tracked by a snowcat used to supply Celovska Hut. Up to Mačenska Planina the snow was mostly wind-packed, higher up it turned into refrozen and crusty (almost ice, crust didn't break). On top there were 2 or 3 cm of fresh snow and graupel. About 150m below the summit I put on crampons, without them it would be quite hard or risky. I stuck more to the SW ridge because it was less hard there. At the top there's a cross, apparently a plaque in memory of the late Carinthian governor Haider is attached to it, but I didn't see it. I skied down the ascent route. To Mačenska Planina the descent was excellent, further on just as offered by heavy wind-packed snow and lower down the road tracked by snowcat tracks. Already in the morning I spotted five ski tourers in Široka Riža right of Stol, two I met on Kozjak. No one in Janežev Žleb, not even ski tracks. It's worth noting that avalanches have scraped the south flank of Kozjak, which was skiable until recently, down to the grass. For skiing that side you'd have to work hard to find passages that are also safe. Weather was all over: from sun in the morning, to graupel, snow, fog, and finally rain hit me just before the car. But it all turned out as it should.

Sunday 25.3.2018 Weather forecast promised, so we looked for a hill offering pleasant skiing and safer conditions. Started in nice weather, continued in worsening, waited in the hut in between, approached the summit and skied down in exactly the kind you wish for. Snow base of all kinds, wind-packed up top, light crust in between and hard, icy on the road below. Not just the tour, the company was great too https://tubojan.blogspot.si/2018/03/ovcji-vrh-turni-smuk_29.html

On Sunday we started early from Podnar towards Svačica and Sheep Peak. At saddle Vrata we headed to Svačica (path initially less visible then well followable) then from its summit right towards the state border and then to Celovska Hut. A bit beyond the hut we turned to meadows and via SW side reached Sheep Peak. Really nice and varied circular path full of stunning views. Recommended! LP
