Gontarska planina, Veliki Babnik and Tošč

Today I went as the forest Joža into Polhograjsko hribovje. On the tour immense peace accompanied me, like never before. I made a nice circular tour through the lesser-known world of Polhograjci. I started the tour at the Legastja inn in Ločnica, continued along the plowed road to the hut on Govejek, climbed to the ridge of Gontarska planina and over Veliki Babnik. From there to the ridge of Tošč, to the top. Fluffy snow (up to 30 cm) was just enough that walking was really fun and comfortable. On the path almost spring sunshine warmed me. Paths are well trodden (not overtrodden), perfect for families and other hikers - no ice. At the top of Tošč it got a bit crowded. On the way down I took a lesser-known route (for connoisseurs - at signs on spruce, right along wide gully past Ločnica waterfalls to Rovtar). For this tour I spent 3.20 min walking. It was poetry.nasmehnasmehnasmeh

Yes, friend! At the top of Tošč PD Medvode already in December sets up a real spruce, on Christmas decorates it nicely. On it you find all kinds of generous-comic decorations, from candies, chocolates, small bottles of schnapps, nice wishes, souvenirs. When you're up there, you feel like at home but even there it's not so nice...

Today's ridge path to Vel. Babnik reminds me of its solitude and beauty with Škednjevca in Fužinske planine, if the diligent hiker wants to taste and discover the last pristine areas. ... Here I go right onto the path (spring water) and left steeply up, where after a few m I reach the grassy ridge under the house. Here we go up a bit left into the forest, where soon, when we spot the ridge, we turn right onto it. Further this direction unfailingly leads on narrow paths and further on solid track, all along panoramic, idyllic ridge. Above we cross grassy and pine-covered pre-summit of the ridge, descend for a moment and finally step on the top of main ridge. Follows still walking on part of ridge that turns into summit ridge of pre-summit, then main summit Vel. Babnik 905 m. When returning from summit after 5 min walk back, there are several different paths (one goes right down SW, ridge straight), we here immediately turn strictly left and stick to grassy-shrubby green ridge. Below again stick to left part of ridge (there are two!), in between lower is canyon (above passable - made path), below not passable! Steepness is quite big, all overgrown, visits here very few, as on top of ridge I scared the resident Golden Eagle here. This is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, of still solitary paths in Polhograjske Dolomites. But it's steep all the way, yet very beautiful, so good to stop several times on panoramic ridges and admire views and nature. Path for connoisseurs!.nasmehjezik

I also figured it out when I visited their courtyard in Mačkov graben. Extremely friendly people, brother Rok and parents on the right bank living in old house. Rok offered me parking, next to it self-service with mead outdoors. In winter I'll visit them again. But I mixed up the location because knowledge of location was based only on that side of Polhograjsko hribovje. They are in Mačkov graben there where asphalt ends, quite high up, left Rok and bridge.

Since there's sadly little snow in the mountains, today I decide on a short trip to the nearby Polhograjci.
I start at Legastja and ascend the steep ridge, which higher up turns into a visible path to Veliki Babnik. On the top of the ridge I scare a chamois that was sunning itself on a ledge over the abyss. On this extremely beautiful, panoramic and solitary path you rarely meet anyone, more often a golden eagle or chamoises. On the summit I look towards Tošč, which has little snow on the north, then towards Igla and Gontarska planina over Govejek to the valley. The tour is quite different in experience from other trodden marked tracks of the Polhograjci.nasmeh

The weather forecast was bad for the afternoon, so I headed for the nearby Polhograjci. The plan was the wildest approach to Vel. Babnik through the steep, overgrown large canyon of Beli potok, which is well visible also from Sv. Jakob. Inside there usually the most chamoises roam, very few people enter. ... After 200m the gorge narrows and there we turn left through the forest 20 m upwards. We come to a flat gravelly clearing, there we turn into the right gully and after a short ascent, to the left we spot an intermediate green ledge of undergrowth (between gullies). We grab this ledge and in the middle on the left edge we notice a path that crosses the gully to the left. After crossing we go to the left ridge right by the gully and continue on the still visible pathlet. Here we stick to the right steep screes that lead to the grassy ridge, which winds for some time to the highest part of the canyon start. Further there are visible steep grasses, which we do not follow, but on the right by the gully edge we notice a system of easily passable but steep rocky steps. Higher up we finally reach the summit ridge, which is strewn with grasses and beautiful pine forest. The pathlet is further well visible, which brings us to the last ridge of Vel. Babnik and in 10 min we are on the summit. I descended over Igale, climbed over hayfields still to Gontarska planina and over Govejek finished (nailed) with a sausage. The path is very solitary, wild and little known. In wet conditions extra caution is needed. I warmly recommend the path to those who want to get to know a different face of the Polhograjci and are used to easier pathless terrain, but not to occasional Sunday hikers.nasmeh

At the end of the ledge the terrain is not passable; it is only the start of a loose steep canyon.8
Inedible!9
That ridge on the right is the normal route via the accessible ridge to Vel. Babnik (already described).10
Strange thing: tied chunks of ice on the pine?, hunters already have something among them.11
After 50 m of descent, to the left (looking upwards) follows the only possible passage to the left ridge beside the canyon.12
It's quite inaccessible here too, but go right over the steep scree (orientation: three trees).13

Viharnik, are you too looking for climbing paths from Ločnica?nasmeh I practiced your variant a bit more to the right, over the "stenica" and to the ridge. Unfortunately there are plenty of ticks. Best regards.

Yes, I also noticed the right variant with a nice crossing to the right ridge. I didn't see ticks. They probably hid because of the rain, and they don't bother me much either. But here in the canyon of Beli potok is a chamois shelter, there are quite a few of them around here. The older lady Micka from under Govejek said that one morning about 20 specimens were grazing there.nasmeh

Yesterday afternoon before the strike against our politicians I did a smaller loop around the Polhograjci.
In Ločnica at the parking for Osolnik I climb to the saddle, there I turn left to Gontarska planina, descend to Govejek and past Micke's house and waterfall back to the starting point.
At first it started snowing at 700 m, later on the return the snow line was already at 500 m. At Micke's over radler we talked about our corrupt politics and background. The wise lady who survived the war times concluded that if people followed Jesus' teachings; don't lie, don't steal... then in Slovenia and in the world no police or prisons would be needed. But thus the original spiritual essence of modern ruling people and tycoons-businessmen is completely covered and obscured by their own greed and selfishness, without basic moral norms.

Today, a wonderful trip from Ločnica from the "pri koritu" parking lot along the stream past several waterfalls, up to Micking raj, over the hut on Govejek along the lower path at the foot of the Gontarska plateau to the top of V. Babnik. At the top a little sightseeing along another path, then back over the Gontarska plateau towards Osolnik, then back to Ločnica. At this time full of broom along the path, you don't know whether to walk or just admire. Nice circular tour, but other variants possible, all in this beautiful world. Nice spring trip for a short time, I can only recommend it!

For a long time I wanted to check viharnik's variant of the ridge ascent from Ločnica to Veliki Babnik. ... Somehow we found the right ascent direction, but then followed quite laborious bushwhacking through fallen trees, which didn't take away our will to proceed on the quite steep path. The path is at first very poorly trodden, somehow footprints of one predecessor encouraged us, who was probably more adventurous spirit, otherwise wouldn't bushwhack here. With height there was less fallen stuff, we scared a herd of chamois who probably enjoy heavenly peace here. Along the quite steep ridge we arrived at a nicely laid traverse path that wound through extremely scenic, pine-covered world, where we first saw Grmada across the canyon and Tošč. Here just pure pleasure of ascending to the top. Return over Govejek and past Micke's homestead to Legastja, where the loop closed. Viharnik thanks for your path description, it was good encouragement. Sometime then also to Beli potok canyon. That sandy world among pines draws me.nasmeh

Yesterday afternoon the plan was to find the ridge path behind Legastja to Gontarska planina, but it turned out a bit different. Veliki Babnik wasn't planned, but we arrived right there along quite steep slope with the help of hands. Who would distinguish all these ridges, we came to the first, and a ridge path appeared from left, later another from left. These ridge paths, slightly trodden, inspire satisfaction when you spot them, sometimes you just guess them as they are solitary and sometimes barely traceable. And since I knew these upper ridge paths since last year, progress was easier. Below the summit admiration at the view of Beli potok canyon that cuts towards Grmada.

Return along equally scenic, pine-covered ridge path from Gontarska planina that ends behind Legastja. So a really nice, though a bit wild loop closed.

Soon also planned path through Beli potok canyon.

Thanks to you Viharnik and Ločanka, with your enthusiasm-filled descriptions of solitary paths, you enabled me to discover this side of Polhograjci too. I didn't manage to find the start of the ridge path to V. Babnik that Viharnik describes, but I persisted and bushwhacked through fallen trees and pathless terrain finally reaching the ridge path. Here it's really wonderful, pines, blooming broom, views to snowy KS Alps and of course, complete solitude. I extended the trip over Gontarska planina to Osolnik and back almost to Govejek. Almost because loud music was spreading from the hut from afar (Saturday of course), which I didn't want for the end of this trip. So I took a shortcut to the marked path to Legastja. Wonderful trip on a warm spring day will surely stay in memory long. I'll come back.

Yesterday my colleague and I headed to Gontarska planina. The path led us: Trnovec-Brunarica pod Osovnikom - Gontarska planina - Dom pri Govejku - starting point. Since it was my first time at Gontarska planina, I was surprised to realize it's not a pasture in the true sense, but a steep ridge velik nasmeh, which was still comfy to reach from this direction, while the slope from Govejek side is pretty merciless. On the pasture itself there are signs warning not to litter, and for the flowers, but I don't get why they didn't add at least one sign where the paths go from here. One goes down to Govejek, the other straight on God knows where.... Really awkward for first-timers there... best nasmeh
