Grosser Hafner/3076m asl/17.8.2018
Großer Hafner is the highest mountain east of the artificial lake Kölnbreinspeicher in the Ankogel group. A three-thousander suitable for anyone who wants to cross the magic line of three thousand meters. Vesna Dautovic and I chose the Kölnbreinspeicher lake with dam 165m high as our starting point, from there past the alpine pasture Krumpekar and the hut Kattowitzer Hütte to the saddle below the summit Gamsleitenkopf. From there the views became more and more beautiful. On to the mighty mountain Hochalmspitze (which we chose for our next day's venture) and its still large glacier Hochalmkees. Later also to Ankogel, Säuleck and Grossglockner. At the summit very nice weather awaited us and idyllic picture of everything that adorns this world. The summit is surrounded by three smaller glaciers – Wastlkarkees, Rotguldenkees and Lansichkees.

Jože insisted that this time it should be his choicenasmeh. And he was right.
We had a wonderful trip to the edge of the Hohe Tauern, but at the same time views into their heart. I fell in love with those sparkling rocks, all colorful shades, with a multitude of high alpine flowers at this time, and the babbling of streams that accompany you the whole way, as there is no shortage of water in these parts. You barely cross one, you're already stepping on the grass of another, under which you hear the water gurgling. If you look higher, you notice a waterfall falling over the rocks.

We were quite early, around 6am we arrived at the mountain road, and there was no one to stop usnasmeh. We parked at the artificial lake Kölnbreinspeicher, where we saw the glowing mountains rising above it. We found the path that led us through a beautiful alpine pasture with the same-named stream to the hut Kattowitzer Hütte. If you only climbed to the hut, you'd have plenty to admire on the way. Soon you encounter the first snow, which you can completely avoid, or use a bit for your pleasurenasmeh.

At the summit there were open views in all directions, only the highest Great Klek didn't reveal its shape. But definitely the most beautiful view was of the royal Hochalmspitze, and Ankogel wasn't far away either.

It's nice to have a three-thousander all to yourself for a few minutes, and that's exactly what we got briefly on Wednesday.

A trip whose magic you realize to a large extent only the next day, when you recover your strength, and memories of the beauties come to the fore, while the return path from the hut back to the lake is forgotten, where ascents followmrk pogled every descent. The heat did its thing.

Has anyone been there recently?
We plan to go see the lake tomorrow and then to Hafner. Any snow?

For a long time my son and I had planned a jump to 3000m and yesterday it succeeded nasmeh. With bikes we started from the lower parking lot for Malta-Hochalm-Strasse where they collect the toll. We only started at 8.30 so it was already quite warm. Numerous waterfalls along the path are a real enrichment, the tunnels a cooling velik nasmeh. We parked our bikes behind the tunnel where there is also a sign for Großer Hafner. The road to the hut and summit drags on but the views are really unique. At the summit at 14.00 we were both very happy velik nasmehvelik nasmeh.

Großer Hafner on Saturday 8.8.2026.

Glad that all three of us stood on a three-thousander again. We walked a longer route than described on hribi.net.

We parked at the last free parking lot before entering the toll road. There, right after the large inn, the marked path begins, which also leads to Großer Hafner. The path is definitely worth walking, it is very interesting and doesn't drag on, the lower part of the path is also some kind of educational path, and there are also some beautiful waterfalls on the way.

However, more elevation gain must be covered (2200m and 25.5km)

The path to Großer Hafner is marked as very difficult on Hribi.net, but on the way to the top there is only about 10m of a harder, slightly exposed section that goes over slippery rocks, where a rope helps us. Otherwise, the entire path is really a nice walk through meadows and rocky mountain world.

Zapp and Dusty were mainly thrilled by the abundance of streams, on this path they weren't thirsty at all, because water flows around every bend (literally nasmeh).
