Hafner!
Does anyone know the latest conditions, or any kind of information about visiting this mountain - more recent!!

It snowed in the Austrian Alps today and whitened the peaks above 2500m. For the ascent to the summit, it's best to wait for the new snow to melt. This usually takes 2 or 3 days after the snowfall.

We would like to visit this mountain - I found this description already and checked it before (thanks anyway)!
It looks like we need to monitor snow conditions in this part of Austria and wait for at least a few days' stable weather picture. Anyway Tadej thanks, if someone finds out something new or wanders around there, we would appreciate any new info.
Since it's a 3000er we can expect snow after every stronger rain!!

Großer Hafner - 3076m

Finally this year before hut closure (30.9.2009) we managed the planned route. Planned for Friday 25.9.09 then postponed to Saturday due to weather.
Saturday morning 26.9.09 was sunny and when turning (Grüffen) to highway it looked sunny in Austrian mountains. The closer we approached Carinthia and turned off highway at Gmünd the worse it looked. In car already quieter and all thinking: will we have luck with weather!
Mountains wrapped in black fogs and at valley entrance where toll collected (16eur for passenger vehicle) visibility barely few meters. When parking at Sporthotel Maltatal (reservoir) fog starts lifting and sun peeks occasionally. Check out dam and hotel crystal collection – all free.
Few minutes before 12 start to Kattowitzer Hütte. No views to neighboring mountains on way, but sun shines occasionally. Lots of cranberries on path (never seen so many). After three hours hut appears from fog. We are only ones and met no one on way. Order beer mugs and look around (fog lifting). In hut pleasantly warm and caretakers very friendly. As night nears more visitors come and quickly arrange overnight.
Overnight/shared bunks 7.50 eur
Beer 0.5l 3.30eur
Tyrolean dumplings in soup 5eur
Imperial roast and apple compote 7.80
More on offer!!
By night hut full of hikers and whole hut smells of dumplings/knödel. (they ran out too)
Sunday 27.9.2009
At 04 look out window – CLEAR STARRY SKY
Up at 05 – FOG
Only ones in dark and fog ascending to ridge (at5:50). Manage to keep route direction and before ridge entry sun shines (fog dropped lower too). Ridge secured and technically not hard. At 2900m new snow awaits. Snow frozen, can avoid it. At 8:30 on summit.
Descending meet total 6 visitors ascending to top. Descent bit dangerous – fog wet rocks and then all iced (few degrees below zero). At hut breakfast and head to start (reservoir).
For ascent and descent (hut – summit – hut) took 4 hours.
Hut – reservoir 2:30min.
Sporthotel Maltatal – hut 3h
So think time estimates in route desc. quite optimistic!!
Sporthotel Maltatal – Großer Hafner 4:30h – my estimate: at least 6h!!
Sporthotel Maltatal - Kattowitzer Hütte 2:30h – my estimate: 3h
Drove 480km (Polzela – Sporthotel Maltatal - Polzela)
Ascent not technically demanding. But problems can arise: fog, ice, snow. Changes conditions and aware on 3000m. No mobile signal from hut to summit.
Photos say something too!

Yes, thanks!
I'd recommend the Kattowitzer Hütte hut to you too (next year - closing this year!!) You'll manage it with pleasure (though there's a rocky slope to the hut too) - now that you've beaten Storžič you're... capable of this too!! If you need detailed info, let me know!

On Sunday 8.7.2012 we started from Tolmin via Predil to Trbiž. Bought vignettes for Austrian motorways. Weekly vignette 7€. Drove ca. 100 km on motorway towards High Tauern. Exactly to Gmünd, left motorway and continued to Malta and up valley to Fallerhütte, paid 17€ entrance/parking. Headed to Kolnbrein reservoir. Road has several tunnels with gates. To prevent snow blocking entrances in winter. Kolnbrein lake 4.5 km long, 630 m wide. Accumulates ca. 200 mil m3 water, produces 577 mil kWh.
Parked cars here. Headed to hut. Nice path, bit muddy at start. Arrived at hut after almost 3 hrs. After 30 min break continued to summit. Path well marked, secured with plastic ropes in places. Reached 3076m summit after almost 2 hrs from hut. Clear sky, good views: Oberlecher Spitze, Gamskarnock, Tischlerkarkopf etc. Back same way, less time. Total ascent from lake to Hafner summit 4h50min. Descent under 4 hrs. Big thanks to Davorin and Nadja Gaberšček from Tolmin who led this hike.

Hello!

To the already nice and correct tour description I add, first thanks to guides Nadja and Davorin for leading and explaining the tour, for nice company in the group and attaching some photos with author's permission - Davorin's! And as curiosity: water in abundance far towards summit. Free at hut. In Julian Alps e.g. water is scarce.
Regards and safe in mountains!

Perfect conditions on Hafner yesterday.
Path to Kattowitzer hut is 30 min shorter from valley than from Kölnbrein dam, unfortunately we use it the most.

On Thursday 09.08.2012 start from Sporthotel Maltatal parking. Path to KH hut muddy at start from rain. Later on ridge fog joined so no nice views. Ropes ok. On descent at KH hut rain starts so we decided to return to high altitude road Maltatal parking at 1509m.

Yesterday we set off for this 3-thousander. Through the Karawanks tunnel. Tunnel toll 6.5€ one way. The starting part of the path reminds me of the path from Vršič pass to Jalovec. You walk more than an hour but don't make any significant elevation gain. To the hut we took less than three hours. To the summit another two. The ascent is demanding, exposed at the start of the ridge. Don't forget sunscreen and fluids. The stone blocks are covered with some fluorescent green lichen. Weather was great nasmeh

Hello!

I'm planning a winter ascent on Hafner and wonder if anyone knows if Kattowitzer hutte has a winter room, if it's locked and has a stove.
I tried contacting the family running the hut by email, but got notice that off-season only by phone, and since they don't speak English, and I don't know German...
Ugh, I'd appreciate any info.
