Gubno 2035 m

Print
heinz24. 11. 2009 21:45:07
Today from Dovje:
Really pleasant hike at this time, when there's still no (no more) snow above 2000.
I can say the path is almost entirely dry, except a few short shady sections. As for the final ascent to the top, it's just like that, there's some frozen snow on the ridge, where it's best (my view) to use crampons, even if only for a few meters. That's what I did. Didn't meet a single person, only (quite) a few chamois. Peace!
Path ahead towards Kepa from the "junction" to Gubno is snowy, untracked and icy, at least a certain section, so I simply didn't go that way (further). Gubno was quite enough.
Pleased.
Recommend! The path is really one of the nicest in the western Karavanke.
Good luck, heinz!

We prefer less visited paths and peaks. Heinz, thanks for the tip, we'd somewhat forgotten about Gubno. So we headed out today. Conditions are, to our delight, much more wintry than on your visit. Snow starts in the forest above Brvog hunting hut, initially a millimeter or two, up to the summit the dry snow depth grows to 20-30 cm. Towards Kepa still untracked today. Wonderful views, quite strong wind on top, but in one word a beautiful day.

You almost certainly encounter chamois here...5

Thanks for the tip too, conquered this beauty and also Dovška Baba today in very decent weather. Nothing was tracked, so I was breaking trail all the way, but due to soft snow no problems. To Dovška via Mlinca saddle, also a very nice path, no one anywhere, first people only at Dovška pasture, but they came from the other side. It added up to a bit more than six hours of walking. Recommend.

On a clear morning I head to Gubno. Path runs through forest for a while, when higher up a wonderful view opens to our highest peaks. Along the scenic path I reach below Gubno, while crossing grassy slopes far below I spot chamois. Short ascent along the edge and I step on the summit. I sit quite long in the warm sun watching the Julian Alps peaks, they were beautiful in the clear day. I look towards Kepa but decide to visit it another time. On return the sun was already burning strong, steaming from the bushes. It was a nice day. Good luck everyone

Dovje - Erjavčev Rovt - Kepa - Gubno - Visoki Kurjek - Mlinca saddle - Dovška Rožca pasture - Dovje

On Saturday - a day made to order - for one of the nicer autumn hikes in this part of the Karavanks, so my buddy and I decide without much thinking to leave the car above Dovje and do the above (almost) circular route. We recommend it only to those with good fitness, as it's over 8 hours of walking, the ascent to Visoki Kurjek from the west side (saddle between Gubno and Vis. Kurjek) only for the experienced, as it's relatively demanding pathless terrain. The descent along the ridge from Visoki Kurjek to Mlinca saddle is a bit awkward due to scrub, ... but peace and views reward all human effort.
... Erjavčev Rovt, at the end of the forest road, sand pit and artificial lake1
... by the left stream we look for the start of the markings for Kepo2
... idyllic alpine pasture, right at the forest edge, where the hunting hut Na Brvogah stands3
... junction below Kurjek: turn-off for Gubno, Kepo, or continue to sedlo Mlinca4
... view of Gubno from the eastern side5
... crossing some snow patches below Gubno6
... a bit up - down - up, ... all more difficult sections on the marked path are well secured7
... view of Kepo from the eastern side8
... view from Gubno towards Visoki Kurjek9
Visoki Kurjek from the western saddle, its first pinnacle is bypassed between the rocky and grassy edge on the right10
... to the second pinnacle - towards the summit - we continue along the far right side above the gully11
... view back from the saddle between both pinnacles12
... descent from Visoki Kurjek along the ridge towards saddle Mlinca13
searching for the best passages through the scrub to saddle Mlinca (wire fence along the old state border helps)14
... above the hunting stand we search for the path to alpine pasture Dovška Rožca and Dovški Baba15
... from the hut on alpine pasture Dovška Rožca, ... and then a nice stretch of path into the valley16

Well, interesting..! What's it like on Kurjek? Did you try Lepo Plevelnica? Probably passers-by overlook these (likely) most interesting peaks too much. Is the path up there, along the ridge, really that demanding? Tell more.. Thanks! Regards!!

Hainz, here's my description: At Mlinca saddle turn left, soon right uphill across clearing to bush patches, then steeper along border stones towards grassy summit with numerous rock teeth. Just below the grassy top of Lepo Plevelnica stands border stone (no. XXVI/167), which is an important orientation point. So you've reached Lepo Plevelnica. If you want to climb also Viski Kurjek, go left westwards from there. First descend a bit to bypass the rock tooth (pillar), then cross scree slope, from where you climb again towards the ridge full of numerous ridge rock towers. Bypass them on steep south side. Soon you reach a small flat, from where across dense bush patches you ascend to the top of Visoki Kurjek. Its west slope towards Gubno is steeply cut off and crumbly, as you can see from alyas's photos. More than technically, this ascent is demanding orientation-wise. Alyas's ascent also features technical difficulties, namely quite crumbly rock and easy climbing in it.

Yes, thanks to both! (While I was writing the first post, alyas hadn't uploaded all his photos yet). The 11th and 12th are interesting to me.
I've already come across hikes from Mlinca to Lepa Plevelnica, and further to the top of Visoki Kurjek, but for descent (better ascent) to/from the saddle before Gubno nothing else but that the descent is very serious, quite demanding, intended mainly for alpinists, etc.
Sometime I'll go take a look. Thanks for the info!

but you can choose steep, yet nicely passable southern slopes of Kurjek vrh for descent or rather ascent

A really nice approach to this somewhat neglected mountain goes via Kurjeki. Car stays at the junction where the road to Kepa branches right (sign on rock), left towards Šetinov rovt. Start left along the road, after 15 min a cairn directs to a modest path right into the forest. Soon we reach a meadow with two huts. On the right (eastern) side, at the edge we pick up the path which then more or less along the ridge leads towards the summit. Follow the sign to the cross, the path brings us to the panoramic summit above Dovje, Borovlje. Neatly arranged, with first aid in the logbook hutjezikWe go back a bit and descend (about 100m height) to the other side, to Šija saddle, then up again. The little path is always nicely traceable, a bit more attention needed in the second part as it sometimes gets lost or less trodden. Follow it towards two large gullies, cross the first, right after rising from it it directs us steeply left up along the gully. Need to scramble quite a bit, here and there look into the brush where the path shows again. After tedious exit from the crumbly gully we join perpendicularly the marked path to Kepa, which we just cross and continue straight up. After some 10 min we reach Gubno summit. Path unmarked all the way, some off-trail parts, not recommended in wet, fog or snow, return better via marked path to Mlinca saddle and then down. Also today a day for goddesses, warm, almost no wind. And tomorrow new day.nasmeh
The day was dawning. Who knows which sunrise in the mountains this already was this year. But each one is beautiful individually1
Still glowing, nature can still manage2
The sun rises quickly, the light becomes whiter3
View from the hut's threshold to Šetinov rovt. I could get used to it4
Borovlje, viewpoint above Dovje and Mojstano, with best wishes5
Fog from here is just an addition to the beautiful photo; view to the East6
Log book hut at Borovlje, behind Kepa (left) and Gubno (right). Lično.7
Resa, it will bloom! I thought I was the only one doing this now :))8
The little bridge is old and the railing unreliable, but without it it would be troublesome9
Tower in Kurjekih, with interesting decoration10
View from Kurjekov on the inaccessible southern walls of Kepa11
Artworks along the path, Dovšak baba in the background12
Nature is always right. Why did it hide this so high? :))13
Steep grass slopes, probably nasty when wet14
Steep crumbly exit, a bit to find and a bit (better) to watch out for15
On the marked path, left towards Kepa, straight up for Gubno16
View from the summit back along the ridge. Behind... everything, the whole world17
On the way back: Hunting hut on Brvogi; my vintage, one day older! Probably looks better...:)18
Still a pot of luck, or a lucky pot for the end. Go on this path, it's nice.19

In March this year at Dovška Baba we decided to go to Gubno along the ridge via L.Plevelnica and V.Kurjak.
But the descent from V.Kurjak to the ridge towards Gubno was a bit too tough a bite for us, so we turned back via Mlinca saddle and via the marked path under both summits reached Gubno.

Yesterday again Karavanke mežikanje Gubno from Erjavčev. Snow starts below the hunting hut, a bit lower 3 fallen trees with quite solid blocks of spruce and beech. Crampons and ice axe already needed for both traverses below the junction for nicely snow-covered Dovška Baba.
From the gully of high Kurjek mostly avalanched what had to. Carefully and good luck mežikanje

Today super weather, great views. In the valley they suffered the heat, up here windbreakers were very welcome. At the hut below Dovška Baba it was 19°C in the sun at midday. Path completely dry, in Julijci still lots of snow visible.
The start was not promising at all.1
