Hiking pants

there is absolutely nothing for the demanding mountaineer, there never was and there won't be. If you care so little about yourselves that you buy gloves and socks there and advocate quality, I can't take you seriously. Strange that with all that price/performance not all top alpinists/mountaineers shop therezmeden

Plero asks about buying pants for the undemanding hiker.
For the undemanding everything is good; about 15 years ago, when I started hiking, I went to the mountains only in regular cotton tracksuit pants. Only later did I switch to better pants; in recent years Jack Wolfskin serve me best, practically indestructible pants.
With years you learn what you want and at least for me it's like that, that I am becoming more demanding and I prefer fewer pieces of clothing, but only quality ones. I also bought Milo pants, but I sold them on after one wear because of the unpleasant feel of the material (rough).

Look at these:

Yes, mountains are also turning into a fashion runway.

@nordkap I completely agree with you, but here we're talking about hiking pants and not footwear, but for the latter it's definitely worth spending more money and safety is our top priority in all respects.
Good luck

First a story with Juš. I took his invitation and on a really nice winter day we headed to Mojstrovke. Temperature was about -20 that day, with wind gusts up to about 70 km/h.

Later we sit at the pir, conversation turns to jackets. It was quite awkward for me to admit that my jacket is from Hofer for 29 EUR.

You can relive the cold and pics of that day at https://www.facebook.com/gregor.kurnik/media_set?set=a.1796656876593.2111564.1244852319&type=3

In short, this same jacket, which for some is apparently not even worth wiping muddy hiking boots with, accompanied me nicely, also in ice climbing, on 4-thousanders, sledding, skiing or just on the way to the store... After 6 years still functional and useful.

Guys and girls. Today a hiker on Šmarna gora is better equipped than pioneers in Himalaya. For mountain visits you need will more than "brandname" pants, jacket...

We live in capitalism, where they sell us everything others say we need.

Evolution from hikers to mountaineers and alpinists is gradual. Also the difficulty of hikes, ascents is such. And so we gather experience and knowledge. Learning what clothes we need, what technical gear, etc..

How many of you invest in your own education in mountaineering? When did you last attend a course? Probably very few.

In the past they simply went to the mountains with gear against which today's Lidl stuff is top-notch, and they had a good time just the same. You have a good time too.

Brane. Extra answer for you.
In 2013 I had almost 40 alpinistic ascents, 2014 then 20, I did almost all with at least one piece from Hofer/Lidl.

Will you value me by how I was dressed or what I climbed? mežikanje

tol, I sign. And with that gear in the 70s and 80s they climbed things in the mountains that most can still only dream of today.

Branee, lower price doesn't always mean worse quality mežikanje

Gregor, you probably also remember that one member of our mini "expedition" got frostbite and had to go on sick leave for a month because his toe turned black... Because he didn't have proper footwear despite warnings. I agree with you that any gear (jacket etc...) in good and stable weather is perfectly sufficient. But from my own experience I tell you, when someone was chilled to the bone and at windchill around -40° he quickly changed low-cost jackets for higher-end ones. The same was with crampons, pants, boots and other gear. I didn't start with top shit gear either, but bought gradually. I emphasize again: those who intend to seriously engage in winter mountaineering and alpinism should not skimp on protective clothing. No need for everything at once, but I prefer proven stuff and to be in comfort zone even in extreme conditions rather than shivering from cold. And no one should be embarrassed about what gear they have. They have what they feel best in and according to their abilities but sometimes it's not enough. I told everyone that they will seriously think about changing when the wind whips them and they have to put classic crampons (with straps) on summer boots, dressed in summer pants over long johns and softshell jacket for around the lake... And understand as you want.

No JUS, I just talked about that a bit back in the post.
Quality isn't expensive for nothing, but it pays off and is worth it, especially for serious matters as you say.
Each to his own, I fully agree with you.

Does anyone have any experience with Karibu Alpin Pro 2 pants and Polar for winter.
I kind of set my eyes on them, the cut suits me visually, haven't tried them yet, will soon.
It says they are extremely robust and quality.

How about that?

thanks

Alpin Pro 2 are quite durable all-year pants that don't rip just like that, but not winter pants and more for spring-summer-fall period. One seam did go, though, and they fixed it at Iglu...

On Triglav at -10°C + wind I wasn't cold, just right with these non-mountaineering rags. I started getting cold at the hut and in the hut, because I was around there 2 hours, but to the valley I was dressed and warmed up a bit more. These cheap rags don't breathe like sports ones. You sweat and have to change, if you do you match the good ones... for alpinists this doesn't come into consideration if 2-3 days in the wall, no chance it'd end well, except if just a bit below 0°C, usually cools overnight to -10...-20°C. There used to be quality, today you get artificial material.

Holy fuck, again flowers from LG. Come on, explain a bit what you mean by "artificial material". velik nasmeh

Anything you pull on today (to somewhat seal, hold heat/wind/moisture) IS artificial material bimbo.

Well said, Jus. And that you pull cheap stuff on limbs you're dependent on says a lot.

Anyway, Tol, I totally believe you did it. Like I've already seen a barefoot guy on Triglav/Storzic and elsewhere (and lots and lots of other stuff if not otherwise here on the forum via pics tracked). You all seek limits, sooner or later you'll find it. For Matej no comment, for him the saying doesn't hold: older - more experienced/smarter, rather more experienced - crazier...

Oh yeah.

Let's see how the debate started:

"looking for some very quality summer hiking pants for high mountain hikes. Can be also ones removable at knee.
should be light and breathable yet durable.
In flood of them on market can't decide somehow. Any suggestion or what you recommend from experience."

Here, to the guy asking for SUMMER hiking pants (and even ready to accept zip-off ones), advised to check Lidl/Hofer stuff too.

From that simple question we got to extreme winter conditions in high mountains. Now we'll walk around in summer in plastic with altitude inserts?

Still claim that in mentioned stores (and Spar too) you can get gear that'll serve more than solidly for ITS PURPOSE. Gladly listen to argument why my 6 yr old windstopper vest from Spar (20e) is worse than much pricier vests from established brands jezik

Don't doubt I'll find my limit if go mid-winter Mont Blanc in such vest - but doubt blame on vest velik nasmeh Nice and right to buy top stuff, but not always necessary...

Those who visit mountains in all weather definitely need best gear. Fact! Can't without for your safety.

For others who go higher usually only good weather, nothing wrong if some gear piece from less known store. And some pieces left cuz memories binding us. Maybe that's why some roam less known paths so not meet those judging by gear...
