Hochalmspitze 3360 m

Hochalmspitze (01.11.19)

Winter season starts in October so start a bit under 1200m at barrier closure. Some Austrians, or if you know can get key to open. Extends walking hour and so met at Goßgrabn. Weather fantastic. Winter room one of the nicer at Gießener Hütte. Ascent via path past Steinere Manndln. Few cm fresh snow annoying especially for walking in lower part. At glacier we went up left side, "elastic" rope to ferrata. Glacier less and less, but still better on it with crampons than that rope. Ridge rocky snowed, traverse under summit never dry like this. No problems. Not long on top, returned via ascent path. Crampons all the way up to poles where we left them under glacier (descent). Hard to meet anyone here this time, especially from barrier. Path far from easy. In current conditions this is a step harder than ascent of V. Klek. Nice day.

12.07.20 Hochalmspitze. Ramp was closed like previous ones, this time due to large amounts of debris water on certain road sections after ramp, so ~2-3km walk on road to Gößkar reservoir. No snow to 2500, but quite watery, still very nice. Ascent via Detmolder Grat. Access over snowy slope, snow favorable (winter gear there but unused whole day). Ridge basically dry with occasional minor snowy sections. Caught clear at top.
Since ridge to Steinerne Mandeln icy from fresh snow we rather returned part way via Detmolder Grat to glacier and descent down its middle to two lakes. Turned out super decision as we were express at Gießener Hütte. Upper glacier no crevasse danger signs, but smaller noticeable ones appear ~500m lower. Think in current conditions much more snow trudging if doing Hochalmspitze via normal route. LP

On Saturday 18.12.2021 we headed to the forepeak of Hochalmspitze past Villacher Hütte from Malta valley. Parked at Gmünder Hütte - 1186m then went along forest road to Hochalmhütte - 1919m. There forest path ends and we reach above tree line. Headed towards Villacher Hütte and on to Hochalmkees glacier. Snow was very little below expectations. No wonder since at parking it was only 5 degrees above freezing at 6am. Joined glacier from left past Oberer Hochalmsee lake. The crossing rightward on glacier drags on. Finally stuck skis and headed to forepeak. Didn't tackle crossing exposed ridge to summit due to poor base and gusty wind. The ski descent was enjoyment. But from glacier end to Villacher Hütte snow was poorer. Overall super tour =)

Exposed ridge that leads to the summit. On it there was poor footing and wind in gusts so we skipped the summit.21
The views were nevertheless phenomenal.22

The ski descent to the valley was feasible almost entirely. 24

Yesterday nice circular tour with GK Limberk to Hochalmspitze. Up via glacier to ridge and along ridge to summit. From summit continue along ridge to Gießener Hütte. After short stop on to start. For ascent over glacier needed crampons, helmet and ice axe then via ferrata kit.
Nice mountaineer's greeting.

Last week with my colleague Rok we roamed around Austria and our first goal was the queen of the High Tours, Hochalmspitze via Detmolder Grat. A little after Malta we turned left and along the narrow steep asphalt road arrived at the end of the road under Gösskarspeicher lake. When there's been so much talk about parkings lately - in the middle of nature we were surprised by a fenced parking with toilets, moreover free. In the afternoon sun we climbed the shortcut to the hut where we overnighted. Despite the hut being quite full at night, next day only one more ascended Hochalmspitze besides us.

In the morning we started at four and in pitch dark crossed the streams the path goes over (two of them quite watery). A little below Lassacher Winkelscharte dawn started, here icy wind blew over the ridge. In mists we ascended granite slabs until we reached the 20m snow section under the start of the secured path. Snow already very soft so crampons not needed (ice axe would still come handy!). In a good hour along the cable we reached the fog-wrapped summit, so no views this time sadly. Due to fog and cold wind we soon started descent and stopped once more at the hut en route. Then we drove to Lienz where we spent a few days and did a couple more ascents.

Cook at the hut told us the path over Steinerne Mannln is officially open but ascent strongly discouraged due to falling rocks. Path over Detmolder Grat excellently secured, for ascent and descent huge arm strength needed.
The road to the hut leads high among the peaks of the High Tauern1
Soon the Hochalmspitze also appears2
Giessener Hütte; hut with very friendly wardens3
In the room there were another 6 people besides us, luckily not too much snoring4
In the morning a roaring brook surprises us, we crossed it 10m higher up5
Slightly above the windy Lassacher Winkelscharte6
Tripkees Glacier below the summit7
From the secured part a short ridgelet and snowy section still separate us8
The first 15 m we climb vertically on slabs9

In a short time the mists cleared also from the top11

I'm interested if anyone knows if it's possible with public transport at least near the start for Hochalmspitze?
So far found only option with train from Villach to Mallnitz and go over Säuleck, but would take 2 days already to reach Mallnitz.

From the east side the bus goes to the place Koschach in the Malta Valley, which is similarly far as from Mallnitz. There is no public transport closer; I just researched it. zadrega Maybe some friendly mountaineer driver through Goessgraben picks up a hitchhiker.

Thanks, turbo. The page is already known to me nasmeh
Indi, thanks, though I don't know where you found the timetable for it. Still, it's somewhat easier around 10 km by road than over the rocks from Mallnitz.
Or wait until I find a ride with a car myself...

Here, my long-standing wish has come true.
Over the internet I found a companion who was willing to go, though he was almost twice as old.
We started in Goßgraben, then via marked shortcuts in the fog to the nice hut. Just above the hut there was sun. Up and down we went via Detmolder Grat. The path itself is excellently secured, only at some places the cable is routed over the harder part, while you can go easier around on the rocks. The path was dry, now probably not anymore. At the summit there were a few people. Only the highest three-thousanders were visible, everything else was in fog. The descent was quite slow, I went on to both summits of Winklspitze, then to Schneewinkelspitze. This summit is not technically demanding, but there's quite a bit of granite rock on the way, and you have to be very careful so that no rock rolls from under your feet. Some wobble quite a bit. At the summit there's no summit book anymore, nor signs at the saddle as I noticed in posts you can find on the internet. On the descent darkness catches me, 10 minutes above the hut my light "dies", luckily the hut keepers come towards me because they saw me and escort me to the hut. I'm very grateful to them. After a nice chat with the friendly keepers and a good tea we descend to the valley by road.
In short, a good experience and my new highest summit. Hope I can go higher sometime.

Why two days?

Asking because I'm also eyeing this mountain, even if it's that ugly velik nasmeh

Assuming 2.5 hours drive one way, seems manageable in one day for someone with average fitness. Though then it's really tiring for the drive back...
