I'm interested if anyone knows if it's possible with public transport at least near the start for Hochalmspitze? So far found only option with train from Villach to Mallnitz and go over Säuleck, but would take 2 days already to reach Mallnitz.

From the east side the bus goes to the place Koschach in the Malta Valley, which is similarly far as from Mallnitz. There is no public transport closer; I just researched it. Maybe some friendly mountaineer driver through Goessgraben picks up a hitchhiker.

Thanks, turbo. The page is already known to me Indi, thanks, though I don't know where you found the timetable for it. Still, it's somewhat easier around 10 km by road than over the rocks from Mallnitz. Or wait until I find a ride with a car myself...

Here, my long-standing wish has come true. Over the internet I found a companion who was willing to go, though he was almost twice as old. We started in Goßgraben, then via marked shortcuts in the fog to the nice hut. Just above the hut there was sun. Up and down we went via Detmolder Grat. The path itself is excellently secured, only at some places the cable is routed over the harder part, while you can go easier around on the rocks. The path was dry, now probably not anymore. At the summit there were a few people. Only the highest three-thousanders were visible, everything else was in fog. The descent was quite slow, I went on to both summits of Winklspitze, then to Schneewinkelspitze. This summit is not technically demanding, but there's quite a bit of granite rock on the way, and you have to be very careful so that no rock rolls from under your feet. Some wobble quite a bit. At the summit there's no summit book anymore, nor signs at the saddle as I noticed in posts you can find on the internet. On the descent darkness catches me, 10 minutes above the hut my light "dies", luckily the hut keepers come towards me because they saw me and escort me to the hut. I'm very grateful to them. After a nice chat with the friendly keepers and a good tea we descend to the valley by road. In short, a good experience and my new highest summit. Hope I can go higher sometime.

Hello, does anyone plan to tackle Hochalmspitze or some other three-thousander in the Hohe Tauern this year?

Ugly mountain. I definitely want to go higher somewhere, but not drawn there.

Not ugly exactly, but it takes a lot of energy.

I think for summer it's a nice, normal two-day tour. (for Slovenes)

Why two days? Asking because I'm also eyeing this mountain, even if it's that ugly Assuming 2.5 hours drive one way, seems manageable in one day for someone with average fitness. Though then it's really tiring for the drive back...
