A proper round trip today through new areas for us: started at the cemetery in Ilirska Bistrica, along the road to Sviščake to the turnoff for the trail to Ahac, pleasant hike to Ahac and steep descent on the other side. Then first searching for direction, have to look around a bit to find your way among numerous logging trails. Along the path everything plowed up by wild boars. Ascent to Goli vrh, again descent and getting lost among fallen trees where the trail disappeared. At the right time we met a local who directed us and then no problems to Srednji vrh, again a bit of descent and final ascent to Kozlek. Down to the valley via the trail to Jablanice and back to Ilirska Bistrica via the road through villages Vrbica, Vrbovo and Jasen. Total on the way 7 hours (with taking photos, snacking and getting lost), pure walking about 6 hours. nasmeh
Pleasant walk through the pine forest towards Ahac1
Ahac summit is not panoramic but a pleasant resting place2
Windthrow below Goli vrh, the trail gets lost3
We are glad for these signs, now we know we are on the right path4

On Sunday we went with our injured one to the Kozlek Hut and then a quick jump to Mašun, where it's really nicely arranged.

On days like yesterday, when it's drizzling all day in most of Slovenia, it's really nice if you manage to find a spot where the sun cheers you up, and the karst soil keeps the path dry regardless of rain a few hours ago. That's how it was yesterday on the path from Vrbiški dol via Sopile, Srednji vrh to Kozlek, where a larger group of hikers headed. And we spent a pleasant day, as the ascent is not noteworthy, the views all the way to the Croatian sea really excited us...nasmehmežikanje
First turn-off from the road to Snežnik1
Nice forest gravel path2
On the meadows amethyst milkcaps abounded; on this one a striped pyjamarka was visiting3
The path is quite well equipped with signposts4
The somewhat desolate meadows were adorned with plenty of stone garlic5
The forest path gently ascended6
At the first viewpoint a view opened over the Reka river valley7
From the path the view extended ever further...8
A firefighters' photo also had to be taken9
Liburnian savory shone underfoot10
The karst savory has really started to smell.11
After Srednji vrh the path swung downwards and Kozlek appeared before us.12
Along the path there is a section of pronounced karst rubbly terrain.13
even sharp stones are not lacking...14
and soon we find ourselves in front of Koča na Kozleku15
the sea.... you can see all the way to Cres and Krk16
view also towards the direction of arrival17
my humble self on the summit of Kozlek18

now in autumn it is clearly visible where the asparagus plants are in spring22

Scouting trip to Kozlek on holiday Thursday is behind us. So far in the Ilirska Bistrica area we only knew Snežnik, now we know more about the ridge above the villages Vrbovo, Vrbica, Jablanica, Trpčane, all these can be starting points for the Kozlek hut. And another starting point - Vrbniški dol, from the road to Sviščaki. One couple started in Vrbovo, we in Vrbica. The path pleasantly ascends to the ruins of the castle, marked further to the ridge top, where you would continue left towards Goli vrh, Ahac. We went right towards Srednji vrh and the Kozlek hut. The path is pleasant, scenic towards the Reka river valley, Učka nicely visible. At the top pleasant company that explains and shows us more. To the left in the distance Krk, right Cres, far right towards Slavnik and Brkini. In ideal weather you would see Triglav, this time unfortunately not. Interestingly, Snežnik is not visible from here. Descent circular towards Trpčane, but stay more to the right, under the slope and descend to Jablanica. Saw lilies and other flowers. Again discovered new places, we'll be back soon.

Today with family to the hut. Start from parking about 8km from Ilirska Bistrica towards Sviščaki.
Path is very nicely trodden, signs at all junctions + plenty of marks in between. Nature + temperatures already quite summery. Luckily most of the path in half shade of pine forest, along the ridge virtually treeless (no bushes, no trees in classic sense). Pines smelled insanely nice. Wonderful!

Views to the valley top-notch, hut keeper very friendly + prices almost shop ones nasmeh

Return same way. One way takes easy under an hour. For fit hikers I think about 40min or less.
