Could someone from their own experience recommend a GOOD soft-shell suitable for high-mountain visits in winter and ski touring? Regards

Soft-shells are divided into winter (warmer) and summer or three-season ones. Very highly praised are Mammut models, though not necessary. GRS took for winter the Cerro Torre Jacket model, which is very warm, so only for winter. Next, when combined with base layer, is the Ultimate hooded jacket (now the highly anticipated one with hood) - 230 EUR. I bought a non-membrane (breathable) one from Patagonia a year ago, which really wicks away moisture very well. Mammut also has ones with membrane and side zips for venting, which is also fine. It's important that it fits you well and you feel comfortable. More expensive models also have impregnation and partially hold off light showers or snow. For winter-only use, it's good if lined; for summer ones up to around 0°C to -5°C, you can combine with series 100 fleece sweaters.

I suggest you go to ON-LINE d.o.o. Žirovnica in Gorenjska. They have really good jackets, very high-quality. Solid price. I have had one for 4 years already, then bought another the same. Look at the label CALAMAI. And buy it. lp

I'm buying a softshell jacket suitable mainly for the mountains (wind, rain, possibly also a bit warmer, not necessary) and also otherwise to wear - casual. Currently I notice huge discounts (Intersport, Hervis, etc.), so in that range around 40-50 EUR you can already get quite a lot of good windbreakers. In Intersport I have two checked out, but I'm interested in some of your suggestions, since this isn't bought every year; I'd like to buy something quality for several years. Thanks for suggestions.

"Kleemen", I won't mention the "brand-name" of the clothes; I myself use Windstopper, which also has a hood, and under the armpits zippers for ventilation. On colder days, I wear fleece underneath, which also has a hood and zippers for ventilation. Personally, the hood means a lot to me, as you completely close yourself up - "seal yourself", protect your eyes with appropriate goggles, and so wind and cold have a harder time reaching the body. If you're buying something for the mountains, maybe it's not wrong to add a euro or two more, as you said, this isn't bought every year. If you're buying a jacket mainly for mountains, then wear it only in the mountains, because if you also wear it casually, you'll ruin it sooner. Lately I don't go to stores much, but still 40-50€ seems like little money for fairly good quality. Of course what I wrote is just personal opinion; also check under ZS.

Hello, if you already have a quality windbreaker you can also think about some fleece or down jacket (that compress well and take little space), which you wear under the windbreaker when it's cold. Softshell jacket itself doesn't warm that much.

Regarding breathability of windbreakers (Gore-Tex) I always had doubts. You put on and zip the jacket, strap on say a 10 kg backpack and rush up the slope up to 40%, to see how much these materials breathe. In that case you're wet from outside as well as inside. A greater number of different layers keeps the temperature better than two "extremely high-quality" ones. More like the onion principle - more layers, then take off or put on again. Oh, and the previous one mentioned down jackets, those small-small, super-light ones, that can be a very good choice. They take little space or weight, provide a lot though.

M&P and en-goldy told you everything. I would add that buying cheap clothes doesn't pay off. In half a year you'll regret the purchase. Better save a bit more and buy quality windbreaker. Classic softshell is cold and wind blows through quickly.

Excellent, thanks everyone for help. What about for example the highest quality windbreakers in a bit higher price range than my "budget" for windbreaker?

Klemen, check also the kuka extreme website. They have men's hiking clothes too. Their price is 127 euros.

In principle, what you get in specialized stores (iglusport, kibuba, promontana,...) should all be quality, prices range between 100 and 300 euros (can be more of course) which one to take depends a lot on what you'll do with it, whether climb Krn in good weather, or Matterhorn in snowstorm, or something in between

The trouble with online purchase is that you don't dare to try on the item, return shipping is 14€ or 20€ depending on weight which isn't exactly cheap.

If you don't have an extraordinary build, you can get the right size (every manufacturer has a size chart in cm next to the product). Even better to try on locally and order abroad . For say 60% discount it's worth the effort.

Not bad, not bad. Yeah that's also an option, try on here and order abroad. I looked at that site, some products same price as here, others much cheaper so depends what you get. Resolve from North Face for example same price as here on sale. From what I saw in tests it's pretty good for the price (70eur on sale), but I need to try it first. I'm buying a windbreaker for spring/fall mainly for wind and water, in case of cold best to wear something warmer underneath and windbreaker over, as M&P mentioned.

Kleemen, make a comparison, 1 jacket there for 200.00 Eur, and this one from Hervis. Pay attention to details and little things. Has solid water column, also breathability...The bottom zipper seems a bit weak to me.
