From Matizovec to Kofce and on to Kofce gora. The goal was Veliki vrh, but the windblown snow sank deep. The morning didn't look good, even with a slight drizzle. Later, a winter fairytale.

Today Kofce gora - rain, wind, fog, on the top snowing, but still very nice nasmeh

Today so clear that I even had a view nasmeh

of Kofce gora, Toplar and Veliki vrh... approx. 150m before Kofce gora summit the path gets lost under snow, then by feel...

Given that I plan to visit Kofce mountain tomorrow, I'm curious about the conditions for the ascent? Based on user K8's photos and her comment that the path disappears under snow just below the summit, I'm wondering if any additional winter gear (crampons) is needed? Thanks in advance for the answer.

Check current conditions, Veliko Kladivo. There are no special problems to Kofce mountain. Crampons, ice axe, it's good to have in the backpack just in case.

In between (before the summit) there is some snow, it's wise to cross it with crampons and ice axe, but it's possible to bypass it and "climb a bit". When I went up, the snow was untouched...

Yesterday parked below Matizovec, a couple of cars, to Kofce meet no one, snow starts above hut, track made to V.Vrh, snow somewhere 10 to 35cm where drifted, we go to saddle, then turn right to Kofce mountain and break track, here put on gaiters, crampons not needed. Day fantastic, just us, count 8 the whole day. Below quite some mud, especially where tractors drove. Today drive above Trieste and in Napoleonika climb top without, crazy warm, views on Trieste gulf beautiful as always.. velik nasmeh

Quite late in the morning I head somewhere for sun and mountains. Kofce mountain is therefore a handy nearby option.
Now the road to lower parking is icy but sanded. A few days ago a colleague at the Tržič pump said that with ice and rain (road slab) even a Subaru with chains couldn't get down and he went to the valley on foot. Higher here around 10cm and more snow fell, the solid old base holds only above 1600m. With already little time, I also stay at Tišlar Matizovec, where with the master a debate develops about right wood from felling at the right moon in winter, to drying, processing and installation, when from felled at say 1100m and these climatic conditions and humidity, it's necessary to wait with installation in Ljubljana 800m lower, with dry wood another 14 days so the wood changes further. So my husband will make a wonderful larch cladding for the gables of the end walls of the attic by autumn, to liven up the space and give it a natural note.
Quickly I reach Kofce, continue towards Veliki vrh and then into the nice snow-covered western gully to Kofce mountain. Today only the last 100vm pulled like hell, there near 100km/h. On descent 10min lower almost complete calm. Some also went to Veliki vrh, some turned earlier. Above there are also some windblown ice patches that require a secure step with crampons. For me the ascent had an upper light crust, it broke into completely dry snow over the ankles, below again slippery old crust, so crampons eased the ascent. Later on descent a wonderful sunny day emerged, on Kofce real bliss and warmth. Still the snow remained mostly dry, only on the direct southern exposure to 1600m it was melting.

Today to Kofce gora and further along the ridge to Veliki vrh. Morning strong gusty wind, temperature well below zero, ground and snow frozen. We were already thinking of turning back, good that I convinced myself to continue. Higher up the wind calmed down, the feeling of cold eased and we had another wonderful day in the mountains.

Snow starts at ca. 1,700 m. On neighboring Veliki vrh today a whole bunch of hikers.

We went to check what the conditions are like above Kofce. We didn't try the winter conditions on Kofce gora further because it was foggy. Otherwise super, ...
