Two weeks ago they announced they managed to deliver drinks to the shelter by helicopter because there was a week of drought. Yesterday I saw they are closing on 10.9. for this year.

With Gomišček shelter there have been problems for a couple of years. I think 3 years ago I talked up there with the student caretaker couple... they said they'll survive those 2 more days they're still up, then they never want to hear about the hut and society again in life. Every story has 2 sides... but let's say what I heard from them wouldn't honor any society...

Well, it's true there's no more the society president from that time.

I haven't been walking here for a long time.

but it was possible to walk without using winter equipment.

And after so much rain, visibility is still good.

View on descent from the summit to the shelter.

In winter it's usually a slab in the snow.

Krn, this time a bit differently, which was the wish of all five participants of yesterday's ascent for some time. Above pl. Zapleč we looked for the junction of the slightly trodden mule path to Srednji vrh. The path is even after over a century, initially thanks to hunters, nicely passable. Further in the middle section in steep grass area it gets lost several times. Higher up in the rocky area the mule path is unmistakably visible. Upon reaching the ridge between SR peak and Krn the wind properly announced winter. This ridge path section requires full concentration and no fear of heights. At the summit the wind had calmed a lot, we enjoyed the nice view alone, and didn't meet anyone on the way back.

Let's call it a winter ascent to Krn and a hop to Batognica too - conditions more spring-like than not, but still, a nicely spent day in the mountains.

Recommended gaiters and crampons for the section from the notch to Batognica and return past the lake in Lužnica, otherwise the path mostly goes without complications, a bit more on:

Isn't that photo taken from Prag saddle, tracks on picture probably lead to Vrh nad Peski which is in background? Please let someone else confirm nasmeh

That's right. Left goes towards Krn Lake. In front of us is Vrh nad Peski, right towards Planina Razor.

Krn today. 18.01.2025. It was nice. Demanding conditions. Wind had its day. nasmeh

Still some of us gathered. Didn't think I'd put crampons on at 1400m. A bit further stowed the poles and used ice axe. There was a hard base. Especially under the hut. Cloudless day. Two alpinists reached the hut via Korita.

the boundary between bare ground and snow is visible.

the back side of the shelter is sheathed in ice.

due to strong wind the snow was blowing around.

but the slope is not visible in the picture.

Today's Krn from Planina Kuhinja.

Start at 9am in clear weather, up to around 1400 dry, then snow starts. At 1500 put on crampons and bite into the slope that never ends. Hut keeps looking at you all the time, but you're no closer.

Snow on path not exactly abundant, soft snow, ice slab underneath. Worse for down than up. From hut to summit much more snow.

Up the gully to the hut, go inside to rest, leave backpack and slowly go to Krn summit. Stood for half an hour in cold and light wind on top observing, "waved to them", nothing chilled me. We have 20 cm snow in Polhograjsko hribovje and well below freezing. Slowly descend back to hut, rest a bit more and descend slowly. Conditions demanding, full gear needed, mostly only crampon tips bite. For predecessors a bit better

Krn on Scottish time mežikanje

, consolidated snow surface starts a bit above Kožljak. Snow hard and holds, tracks of predecessors mostly covered by windblown snow from tonight. To hut a bit down to upper half of door, so quite some snow. Above pl. Zaslap met young French couple with dog, from energy circle nasmeh

spotted two more descending already much lower from hut. Descent today quite demanding but from Kuhinja up I saw they still hadn't reached dry ground. Didn't meet them up nor down?, just hope they descended safely, their speed didn't inspire confidence. No pics today at all, phone broken velik nasmeh

Has anyone been to Krn in the last week? Interested if the path from Planina Kuhinja is completely dry yet? On camera see some snow patches below summit, but don't know if on path or beside it.

Snow up to your ass if you sit behind some rock velik nasmeh

. Otherwise path completely dry and nowhere step on snow, checked today. Quite some visitors, except us four all foreigners.

18.07.2025. Drežnica - Krn via footpath. We went on Friday. Along the known path. The forecast was still for nicer weather. But for Krn you never know when it closes in. When we were approaching the hut, there was still some blue. Then we stayed in the gray. Not just us. Mostly foreigners went up yesterday. Also from Drežnica. Still a nice tour. On the way home we stopped somewhere by the Soča, before Tolmin. Maksi got his again. On the road there wasn't much traffic. No jams and that overtaking.

bearded vultures were flying across the sky.

at the top it didn't show the exact height. At the shelter exactly.

From Planina Kuhinja up to the fork for the S. Korena path. Along it to the summit, then descent over Batognica and above the lake in Lužnica back, literally... to the kitchen. velik nasmeh

Fixed protections OK, grasses relatively dry, heat quite severe. zavijanje z očmi
