Krniška Glavica

I wouldn't venture on this tour without skis or snowshoes. The snow here is still quite dry and without anything (skis - snowshoes) walking would be very difficult. Below the summit on descent when I was without snowshoes I sank up to my waist in some places. There's quite a lot of snow in these areas.

Excellent description. How about avalanche danger?

Caution is never amiss. But I think there's no avalanche danger here. In the first steep section the path goes through forest, at the top there's scree below. No big smooth slopes.

In Western Julian Alps above Zajzero. South of it is Montaž, then Rudni vrh saddle with Koča Grego hut, further north Naborjetske mountains (Poldašnja špica, Pipar, Dve špici), north of Naborjetske mountains is Kanalska dolina (Ukve, Tablja)

I've been to Krniška Glavica about 15 times from different sides. The nicest winter approach is from the head of Zajzera through La Grawe valley, however this path is used in winter exclusively by ski tourers. The summit part is very steep, so I've seen wet snow avalanches on the north side there, such avalanches also in the steep forest section, so can't rule them out. Otherwise as dm72 wrote, without skis or snowshoes it won't work until the snow is well consolidated, then of course it won't go without crampons either.

@dm72,
nice job presenting the tour, even nicer photos attached, just to tease. And Anuk with the most stars, as always.

It's been a long time without any impressions from Krniška Glavica, so let me add some (still) summer ones before the next winter ones.

Mitja Košir (Dnevnik) wrote: »…Krniška Glavica (Jof di Sompdogna), exceptional viewpoint, where one really feels on its rounded summit like waiting on some heavenly pulpit, rotating around an axis and revealing wonders from horizon to horizon.«

Summer said goodbye in the best possible way and spoiled us on its last day this year with sun rays. On the »heavenly pulpit« there was really a little paradise on Sunday. You could see far and even farther. Sun rays warmed and colored. Breeze blew just enough to dry some sweat drop here and there. Company, the best possible. The kind that knows how to enjoy moments of heavenliness, knows the paths, reads cairns and doesn't mind stops for »snapping pics« and slow pace. nasmeh

Before I get into some special thoughts… our path led from Zajzera (beautiful warm morning) to Grego hut (very long and pleasant stop for morning coffee) and on to the top of Krniška Glavica (even longer stop for snack and other heavenly pleasures). nasmeh

Return can be summed up again with M. Košir's words: »When the eye has feasted on all the beauty and heart and soul contentedly calm down, we might choose another equally easy path for descent to the start, leading to the foot of wild Montaž rocks. From the top we'll descend a steep path to the upper part of Krnica (Fossa di Carnizza) and visit Stuparich bivouac (1578 m).« From there down to Zajzera. From where it's always hard to leave, so there was lounging on the bench and »sugary heart-shaped« coffee at Ojcinger. velik nasmeh

Conditions though… yeah, heavenly of course. Well, in the last part from bivouac to Zajzera not exactly heavenly, but maybe there's some forbidden tree in that forest besides the fallen ones. mežikanje

So - conditions on Sunday were ideal for hiking, no moisture, snow, mud… hope they last until larches turn golden. nasmeh

The descriptions above say it all, we took the same path as potepinka. We also descended the once "controversial" direct path from the bivouac to Zajzera. The path is normally passable, maybe a bit steeper. Easy to follow too, sometimes even new markers. Upper junction unmarked (old broken sign on ground), lower one normal. Didn't seem too nasty to me, though marked with dots on Tabacco map (why?), normal on ours. On ours, the path branching from the one to Grego hut isn't. The day started nicely, cold wind and fog chasing over the top drove us away, a bit lower it was ok. Rain waited nicely too. Not my first time, nor last. Nice area.
morning offers clear views, although almost at 0 degrees1
what a hut has real luck with the view. No one was here today.2
new marker in front of the hut, behind Poldašnja špica3
Laghetto, more a puddle than a pond, above the hut on the way to the summit4
autumn is here and yellow larches too5
at the top mists rush and spoil the views6
from the top very quickly, brrrr7
built-up slope of Krniška glavica (black constructions, surely)8
autumn snapshot from below Montaž9
the sky hung over bivak Stuparich, but it didn't rain anyway10
a little above the bivouac, here the path branches to Amalija, nice demanding path to Montaž11
crossing the gully on the path to the screes12
start of the path to the bivouac in the head of Zajzere13
over scree fields to the parking lot14
always enchanted by these corners15
still from the car: around the barracks they cleared the bushes and installed a new fence16

On Sunday 14. 10. we visited Krniška glavica.
Soon above the Rudni vrh saddle there was already some snow, which gave an even nicer look to the autumn-colored larches. The path was b.p. all the way to the top nasmeh
The Dunja valley itself also impressed us a lot, with breathtaking views of Montaž, Zabuš and Strma peč zavijanje z očminasmeh

You can drive to the final parking lot. To the hut is a good path although here and there already a bit icy track. The hut was exceptionally open today due to the announced group. That was of course to take advantage of velik nasmeh. Further to Krniška glavica there were only two tracks of hikers. Snow is mostly dry and over a meter deep. Even with snowshoes it sinks nicely, especially when you cheerfully step over hidden scree jezen. And there is lots of it. Skis or snowshoes are therefore currently mandatory. Bivouac on top is snowed in and offers no shelter. But the view is fantastic nasmeh.

Perfect ten for today nasmeh. The choice was Krniška glavica after a long time, weather gorgeous, views even better. Down in the valley everything creaking from frost, up the total opposite. Path beaten, small crampons recommended but not necessary. Hut closed, bivouac too, road drivable to chapel.

So Edina, this year you'll surpass yourself in visiting mountains outside Slovenia, I almost envy you a bit!
This year there's a flood of visits to various via ferratas and climbs abroad, and I thought it wouldn't attract me anymore in life, but now, reading your exploits, I already doubt my beliefs that Western Julians, Karnic Alps and via ferratas in general don't interest me. Probably I'll start looking across the border again too. Got quite excited! After the self-belaying kit I've started looking too!
Well, where do we draw our inspirations and ideas for tours, a lot from "hribi.net".
