30.11.2019. From Zajzera past Grego hut to Krniška glavica, path to hut dry, from hut to lake still possible without crampons, from saddle to summit snow hard without sinking, Mandatory winter gear,,,, at top alone in gentleness and silence

Although I only manage in Italian, with the help of a dictionary I like to read online news from the borderlands. About what's new in Beneška Slovenija, which is now Slavia Friulana, previously it was Slavia Veneta, and of course about my beloved Resia. Last year I spotted news that they opened a new hiking trail in Zajzera called Sentiero Alfonso Della Mea, in memory of the alpinist and mountain rescuer who lived in nearby Ovča vas. The same day as Della Mea, Mario Gariup also died, one of the last Slovenian Čedermacs, the priest in Ukve. Della Mea was Gariup's parishioner, they were friends, fate wanted them to part the same day, just hours apart, just a few kilometers from each other.

They opened the trail last fall, then snow fell, then the epidemic came, but the desire to visit Krniška glavica via this path didn't fade. On the way to Zajzera it rained all the way to Gornjesavska dolina, if it had been at the starting point too, I'd say the trip was washed out for us. Luckily it was different, even some blue sky and a sunray appeared when we set off. From Planina Zajzera we went by road under Montaž, followed CAI 616 on the scree to CAI 639, went a bit further to the next junction and there took CAI 639a or Sentiero Alfonso Della Mea. Soon it led us to a stream, above which there were some waterfalls, I gallantly carried her across, then we continued steeply uphill through the forest with almost no views. Higher up the forest thinned and gradually turned into open terrain, where among the bushes we soon reached the junction with CAI 611. Left down towards CAI 616 and up over Nabojsovo sedlo to Koča Pellarini or down to Zajzera, but we continued right uphill and after five minutes reached Bivak Stuparič, hidden a bit higher behind the edge. Then we crossed the slopes under Montaž, passed two snow patches where soft snow caused no problems, and at the fork where left up goes to Foran dela Grave, turned right towards Krniška glavica. A bit here and there through dwarf pines and we were at the ruins, from there to the top just a few steps. Rest, snack, first pears of the year. Memories, wishes, plenty of both, even a tear of joy or sadness depending on what I thought of, then we had to go down. First carefully, quite a lot of loose scree on the ruined path, seen through dog paws of course, then pleasantly to the saddle, from there past the lake and Koča Grego to the car but mud up to the knees. Well, exaggerating, I admit, almost to the ankles. It was nice, a very pleasant day. nasmeh

Welcome back Bojan, can I add some more markings on 639A or is following sufficient? I've ordered new signs in this area (also pic 23), waiting; maybe this year they'll do that other part of the forest road from the hut down to malga Lussari (good for cyclists, for us there'll still be that mud as alwaysmrk pogled), one more question, at biv. Stuparich did you see if they installed that covid-19 warning (pic 3)?

Alessio hi,
I had no trouble finding path 639 and 639a. Markings seemed sufficient to me, also enough poles. New signs are visible from afar, old markings on trees too. Covid-19 warning is only in the valley, at the start of path 639a (my photo 3), but not at bivouac Stuparich! Also no warning on the bivouac door, didn't look inside the bivouac. Sentiero Alfonso Della Mea is a nice path, I'll surely go again nasmeh

You have arranged the path very nicely, the signs are really beautiful. Completely different picture than a year/years ago.
Good luck

Thanks to both for the info, sent the picture of the sign to the president of the pl. path CAI FJK to send a complaint to the supplier due to peelingjezen of the red tape; also for the board told him to alert the caretaker of the society from Trieste.

On Saturday we ascended Krniška glavica via circular route, starting in Zajzera continuing over scree on path 611 which is Montaž section of Carlo Chersi path, stop at bivouac Stuparich where you can't just go on. Return past shelter to Grego hut where we admired our path course again which despite weather not offering best views gives full feeling of satisfaction and wakes desire for repeat.

Really wonderful path, full enjoyment in slightly wild environment which this time at top of Krniška glavica didn't allow longer stay. Wind and cold forced quickest descent to shelter which few years ago when we hiked here in snow conditions wasn't visible.

After each path new plans come, this time inviting us to other part of Carlo Chersi path connecting bivouacs and huts in this part of Julian Alps above beautiful Zajzera valleynasmeh.

Second time in very short period we ended up in Zajzera, this time to visit Krniška glavica. Quite surprised by poorly trodden path despite longer stable weather period. Not really many predecessors by tracks but they kept one somehow.

No snowshoes this time and not sensible due to hard snow areas. There used crampons for easier progress and it went to top and long back. Summit head most problematic due to drifted snow and partly hard base. Up via quite exposed south side, down in summer access frame on east side. Met only two Slovenians and no one else.

Warning ... these days some new snow fell, conditions probably harder than ours.
Already the second time in a row parking at the upper parking lot in Zajzera1
View of the northern Montaževa face2
The path to Koča Grego is mostly still under snow3
The hut is closed, the warden apparently arrives later4
Immediately above it we turn uphill5
The small pond Laghetto di Somdogna is deep under snow6
Our goal … Jof di Somdogna alias Krniška glavica7
We walk a long time in shade and cold, up to the first clearing8
The path is surprisingly poorly trodden, only predecessors' footprints remain9
We catch some sunbeams, then back into the shade10
Quite a bit lower we must put on crampons due to the hard snow11
We came via this gully. The summer trail also passes here12
Further on the snow is a mix of everything13
Faint tracks of predecessors lead us to the southern slopes14
Nevertheless, we exited at exactly the right spot.15
The summit ridge is mostly windblown, the snow is hard.16
View past Torre Alba into the Dunje valley.17
Piparji and tricky spot on scree at crossing of CAI 649-F path.18
View of Kamnitega lovca and Višarje19
Descending the eastern slope towards the summer trail20
You can't go completely without cornices and crevices :)21
Most of the trail is long in shade and the snow hasn't hardened at all22
We walk in our own tracks, so downhill is easier for us23
We are right before the break. We'll say goodbye to the sun for a while24
The hut is already open. The warden arrived by snowmobile on the new road25
We know the descent to the valley well, but it's icier than last time26
We are already at the parking lot, this time packed full. Most people use the ski trails27
GPS track of the hiked route. Recorded 8 km and 1000 elevation gain28

Nice spots, beautiful hike

But if circular descent into basin between Stuparich and Grego to Zajezera valley would probably sink much more (read: as I did 3 weeks ago)
Good luck

First 10 minutes from the parking lot are dry, then the trodden path starts, icy in some places. Last part before the hut has snow starting, plenty at Grego brothers hut. Continue in the direction of the marked path, trodden to the lake. Further some tracks that soon end. Then only old ski tracks ease walking as snow is dry and doesn't hold. In the summit part sun did its work and snow is crusty, breaks through accordingly. On descent snow broke through substantially and walking was hard accordingly.
The Grego brothers built the hut in an exceptional location1
The summit is still far away2

Fifth or sixth time, that's the question now. This time all alone, if memory serves, first time like that. Along 616 to the end of the valley, a bit earlier unnecessarily across the stream, so a little back and across the water again to go on. Higher in the forest I leave 616 and continue on 611 to the Stuparič bivouac, in between a short section of path collapsed, predictably there. At the bivouac I revive memories of ascent via Amalia to Montaž and past ascents to the "glavica", then hurry to the top, as it was quite cold and windy. Up top I chat, look around, take some photos and already on the way down, hungry as a wolf. Some hundred meters lower in the bushes I find a sheltered corner and there properly tie my soul, from pleasure while lounging I almost doze off. Rested and strengthened with light steps continue down, at the little lake I groan a bit, so beautiful there, then past the hut continue to the car. Trip full of memories, so quite emotional, might repeat soon, that's when there'll be enough snow for touring skis nasmeh

Very nice spots, excellent choice for today's forecast. Despite the sunshine it was cold and windy on top, but we were happy for that winter feeling with beautiful views. Path without features, next time descend past Stuparič bivouac.
