Ljubelj Hut via ridge to Zelenica

Today my buddy and I went from the Ljubelj border crossing to Ljubelj Hut. Then we continued towards Zelenica. We stopped at Polna Peč in between, nice viewpoint there. The path is nicely varied along the ridge to Zelenica, and scenic.

Since the path is nicely pictured, maybe add that the protections on the path are flawless. The path is definitely not suitable for those who don't enjoy ridge paths, as I think there are six spots where there is a risk of slipping mainly to the Austrian side and there is quite fine scree. I recommend the return via the border path from the top of Zelenica to the lower station, as almost the whole path leads in cool forest shade, which proved especially useful today.

Today early morning from Ljubelj along the road to the hut at the border crossing and further to Povna or Polna peč (1503m). From Peč along the ridge of Ljubeljščica to summit Ljubeljščica (Triangle), to the hut at Zelenica and via ski slope back to start. Path from Peč to summit Ljubeljščica not trodden and at some spots passages quite demanding. Towards weather station snow crusty, but didn't spoil great views on rugged rock shapes. Nice little tour, no doubt.

Today with husband on wonderful ridge path from old Ljubelj to Ljubeljščica summit then past Zelenica to start. Ridge exposed in places, wire cable at toughest spot very handy - at least for me. Nine years ago no cable, had to free climb that tough bit. Also crumbly. Wondered if "difficult path" label too mild? Otherwise scenic path offers unique views, really enjoy it.

Ljubelj, Ljubelj hut, Povna peč, Ljubeljščica ridge, Zelenica hut was today's plan. At hut changed mind continued to Veliki vrh on Begunjščica, then over calvary to Preval pasture through Born tunnel to start. Nice but hot.

Ljubeljščica ridge I like more and more, so with Soroko decided to cross it again but in reverse direction. Started from Ljubelj towards Zelenica hut. After coffee to Zadnji Plot then along ridge further to Povna peč and to old Ljubelj hut for "štrudel". Cloudy and gusty at times but not too bothersome. Just as we reached the car it poured. nasmeh

This little ridge lured us this morning too. Nice on its own, but hiking it on such a beautiful day this season is a feast for the eyes... look left or right, ahead or back, all great views, underfoot colorful flowers... nasmeh

First along the road to Koča na Ljubelju...

In the end we both stepped onto the summit of Spodnji Plot...

...for the view...of course :-)...Past Stol all the way to Triglav...

Towards Ljubeljska Baba and Veliki vrh in Košuta...

The descent was also flowery :-) ...twins - pyramidal houseleek

The hut on Zelenica was deserted today... it will probably be lively over the weekend... :-)

Today to Old Ljubelj first to viewpoint - Povna peč. Really wonderful view from there. Only annoying is no sign at Old Ljubelj hut to Zelenica. As far as I know it's an unmarked, secured difficult path. Continue through big gentian patches just starting to bloom. Soon path into high alpine world. Path exposed in places. Chose secured path to Zelenica as I haven't been there yet. Cables in good condition. Reach before Triangel. There misleading sign straight ahead. Should've gone just 10m right to spot Zelenica. I went straight and reached the last cable again, of course via different path. When I figured it out I went back. Descended to Zelenica hut and treated myself to goat milk. Tiring but nice. No hikers met on the path. Recommend only to experienced.

The road to Stari Ljubelj was built in early Austro-Hungarian times.

Here we are in front of the hut at Stari Ljubelj.

Last year I already came here from Košutica.

The path caretakers get a poor grade for the markings.

Here I am at the scenic spot Povna peč - 1503 m.

Now we are in the real high mountains, where dangerous sections are secured with steel cables.

Quite some exercise awaits us. Helmet and poles mandatory in the backpack.

Another demanding descent along the cables awaits us, if we choose this path.

This protection seemed very ingenious to me.

All the trouble is behind us. We spot a signpost. Where now? It seems a bit suspicious to me, but I go in the indicated direction anyway, and where do I arrive - at the cables. So back to the sign, ten meters to the right - we see the hut.

A bit angry at ourselves, I packed away the camera, but the flowers tempted me to pull it out of the backpack again - I spotted an obirsko sivico - first time this year.

Today with wife on this path. As unmarked, the path condition didn't surprise me. Fallen and annoyingly rocky in spots, secured where needed.
Descended past Vrtača hut admiring flowers on pasture below. Worth it. nasmeh

Couldn't upload pics to "commented trips" so copying comment here adding some pics.

Sat 19.7 with wife along Ljubeljščica ridge to Zelenica. Then to Vrtača. Ridge path extremely picturesque and beautiful. Not sure how to rate it. Neither hard nor easy. Not physically demanding but needs great care. Mainly because no big drops anywhere so one relaxes quickly and loses attention. Path dangerous for slipping in several spots. Can end badly quickly. Maybe rate as difficult or even very difficult due to deceptive sections. Wonderful solitary world. Met no one. Actually shouldn't advertise this path, as it's good that some paths remain uncrowded. Where you're alone or meet those who love peace and quiet in mountains. If you want that, it's the right choice, highly recommend.

...Wild, overgrown, but nevertheless very nice nasmeh

- Quite a bit of the path already walked

- The ridge is getting longer, but the views are beautiful

- This scree field is the largest on the whole path

- Very overgrown, little path barely visible

Ljubelj, Zelenica hut, Plot and along the Ljubelščica ridge to the old Ljubelj pass. From the hut then also by road to the valley. I intended towards Vrtača, but fogs were dragging above approx. 1700m. I like the path since I first hiked it. Renovated hut is now even nicer as the wood darkened a bit. Open every day except Tuesdays. Also stopped at Povna peč.

Yesterday dad and I hiked this path, namely in the direction from old Ljubelj towards Zelenica. Romantic, solitary and full of surprises. This is renovated old border path, mostly runs along the border ridge between Slovenia and Austria. It was quite hot, despite November.
But the trail is exposed in places and one needs to keep a cautious step. This especially when crossing numerous scree gullies, and forested slopes are quite steep too.
Nice to turn from the trail also to viewpoint Povna peč (extra minute up) and at end to Triangel (3 minutes).

From the hut at Stari Ljubelj the path initially goes through the forest.

Sandy ridgelet - one of the more unpleasant spots.

View of Begunjščica, with Zelenica in the deep shadow below it.

Suddenly we are on a vertical pinnacle; a fixed rope helps on the descent.

View back on the traversed path. In the background Baba (aka Košutica) and Veliki vrh, below them planina Korošica.

The Northern Tooth is already in Austria.

Path not trodden, on this ridge currently almost 2m snow, checked Tuesday.

Again ventured along Ljubeljščica ridge. From Ljubelj to old pass and on to Povna peč. Along ridge continued to Vrh Ljubelščice and climbed to Spodnji plot to see how the ferrata top looks. Descended to Zelenica hut and snacked a bit in sun. Only at Zelenica met first hiker. If you like peace and nice views this is right choice. From Begunska Vrtača stones and rocks avalanched twice, still saw one climbing up Šentanc. Hope he made it safely.
