Mala Ponca 1925 m

Today a nice tour with GK Limberk to Mala Ponca starting from Planiška Velikanka. The first hour of the trail it was lightly raining, then the rain calmed down and upon return to the valley the sun awaited us. The trail itself without special features.

The first heatwave of the year is starting, so no dilemma which way the path should be oriented to lead mostly in the shade.

When we found the goal on the map, the plan was made - Mala Ponca via path past Švabec (512) then 512a and return past Zacchi.

Start at 6.00h at Upper Lake, first took us by road to lower lake, then marked path up. Shade accompanied the entire ascent and on the wonderful path along the indistinct ridge we progressed pleasantly and enjoyed the views. Autumn must be a beautiful tour.

At the top quite hot so we could hardly wait for refreshment at Zacchi. Slovenian no, English goes, German and Italian no problem. velik nasmeh

1000m elevation and 13 km is a healthy base before the stream in Pišnica, where we stopped on the way back nasmeh

Very comfortable and nicely laid path past Švabece

You also need to catch your breath a bit

Very nicely arranged section (new) across the fallen gully

One of the most beautiful sights when you reach this stream at 512a

At the top. We didn't climb the real Mala Rateška Ponca today :)

I had it fixed in my head to go from our side, but I see that from the Italian side it's much easier, because the path is marked and also goes in shade if you're early. Then you can refresh in the lake or at least the dogs can velik nasmeh

For dogs the approach past Zacchi is convenient also because we encounter at least 2x water springs/streams on the path. My little dog was very grateful for them nasmeh

We wanted to visit the ferrata on Velika Ponca, but the notice of path 513B closure redirected us to its lower neighbor. Dense fog and soaked scree added theirs, so Mala Ponca was a welcome goal. We rounded it all with descent over Švabešče to lower Belopeški Lakes and return by road to start.

Of the whole loop only ascent to Mala Ponca is demanding due to fallen trees in upper part and some summit rocks. Because of that this part isn't quite for everyone, some experience with such terrain is helpful. Reward is panoramic summit, especially when no fog velik nasmeh

Parked at the upper lake next to the Czech who ended up a bit on his own :)

From the main road soon turn left towards Rif. Zacchi hut

Already at the hut. Against expectations, the fog is getting thicker

Instead of to Velika Ponca, we turn towards Mala Ponca

The path is wide with excellent footing and pleasant for walking

At the junction by Capani Ponza we turn right onto path 512A

This takes us towards the Vratca saddle, where the turn-off for Mala Ponca is also located

For crossing the most awkward part, a freely hanging rope helps

There is no aid for the upper scree slope. Here every year one scrambles a bit differently

Water has also washed away the path right below the summit

On the summit we are alone in the silence of the fog

Once more the crossing of the rock step with rope assistance

The path section to the first junction is retraced

Branch at Capani Ponza. Here we now turn right onto the loop path

It has been here since time immemorial ...

A demanding section follows, which has been well arranged for some years

The terrain gets crumbly, so a safety steel cable has been installed

This section needs to be constantly renewed. Remains of the old bridge are below in the gully

View into the valley. The fog refuses to leave

The descent path is considerably more worn than years ago

Edelweiss inn right by the lake. Currently construction works are taking place in the surroundings.

So as not to open new topic, path 512 open and new variant replaces old secured part now closed, path not allowed for MTBikers (as on all paths marked red-white CAI with number), on many paths Carabinieri Forestali placed cameras for animal monitoring (and bikers).

Very nice picture from Vevnica, Jalovec and Little Koritniški Mangart. Due to abundance of snow I bet my hand in the fire that the shot is at least three weeks old.

; yes, abandoned, rope left so those 5 m you can cross with a little climbing and caution (in that part there is danger of falling rocks from the top).
