Ben, thanks for what you wrote and thanks for the new cairns. I've already been thinking about the ascent and wondering how things are with the fallen trees and the path's followability, since I haven't walked here yet. Juš, to you just this: all the hidden corners that you know, should they remain known only to you and the chosen ones whom you show them to? And you discovered them yourself, right? I assume that on your bookshelf there is no guidebook for any route or any wall where you climb? And you must have first ascents for export… I just didn't find any recorded… probably so that no one would repeat them, right? For me, you're no lover of nature and mountains, you're a plain egoist who isn't worthy of ever taking the writings of Župančič, Vodeb, Mihelič and the others in your hands…

Today a shorter circular tour: Lower Mangart Lake - Svabešca - Capanna Ponza - Mala Ponca - Rif. Zacchi - Upper Mangart Lake. Very nice path that starts before the lower lake. Gentle path leads through the forest, only one shorter part is exposed but nicely secured. Upper part of the path (after the junction from the marked path to Vratice - La Porticina) is well visible, but certainly requires a bit more caution. The whole path is very nice with views towards the lakes, Mangart and Karnics. It must be especially nice in autumn when larches glow in beautiful colors. I recommend it! Later I checked the history and saw that everything I mention has already been written. So what, things often repeat!

After reading the descriptions, we decided to visit Mala Ponca. Starting from Belopeški lakes on path 512, we did the route yesterday. Past Zacchi hut, which was deep in shadow, we continued higher towards the forestry hut. Paths branch there, path no. 512 continues left across the gully, towards Mala Ponca it continues straight ahead. The path is excellently maintained throughout, lots of steps, small bridges etc. Below the saddle we misjudged the path and reached Vratca saddle. Here the path also comes up from our side (from Planica). We didn't regret the mistake, as we had a really nice view of the wilderness of jagged rocks and endless larches. To climb to Mala Ponca we went back a few elevation meters and climbed the adjacent gully to the saddle below Mala Ponca (here the path is crumblier) and then a few meters to the summit itself. The summit is definitely not spacious but extremely panoramic. The wilderness of these parts really surprised us. On the return we met quite a few hikers, some had come up from Planica. Apparently that path is harder to follow. We returned to path no. 512 and continued towards the lower Belopeški lake. In the upper part the path takes us across a couple of fallen gullies, which are well secured. Golden yellow larches accompany us throughout. The path ends right below the Lower Belopeški lake. What more can I say? We were really enthusiastic and are already planning the next visit among the larches, which are most beautiful at this time of year. In July 2000 to Mala Ponca. Conditions excellent, only crowd at parking in Tamar. It was hot, I drank two liters of Isostar. Views incredible. Current conditions? Like those of the predecessor. Let memories of walked paths open...

On Mala Ponca already in distant 1976, when hardly anyone knew about it. Only chamois kept me company. Yes, it's time to revive some memories. Regards!

I'd be interested if @jaz went to the Italian side to check something out. Where did you go up? From Planica did you maybe meet border guards, although back then there was apparently already that regime that you could be in the mountains across the border from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. They say Czechs were fleeing across the border there (as the hut keeper in Tamar in the late eighties: "I don't care if they flee, just don't let the police come bother me afterwards because they use my hut as a base") and the only somewhat passable path was over Vratca, the rest for then mountaineering-illiterate Czechs - horror! If you went from Laghi di Fusine or if you descended from Vratca even lower, I'd be interested how it was on the Italian side back then. I'm really often curious how some places that impressed me from a path or trip as beautiful looked 30, 40, 50 years ago. The path probably wasn't so neatly marked. Was it even marked at all? Probably yes... What about the shelter under Ponca? Did it even exist? Or was there just some container instead? What about that nice viewpoint below it? Did it exist? Zacchi probably already stood but not so nice because it was renovated only around 2010, if I'm not mistaken. And the beautiful Laghi di Fusine? Surely not so nicely arranged but also less crowded, nowadays on summer weekends it's packed there. It would be interesting to know how the via ferrata to Velika Ponca looked, which comes up in one of my next posts. Ah, and Via della Vita. That ladder was really swinging back then and the protections on both ferratas were probably less reliable. From the ridge Vevnica - Srednja Ponca there were still some protections back then and probably not as dangerous as now. That would interest me. Photos, although I know you probably don't have any (ordinary ones you could scan of course) would be really great.

I went up from Planica. I had a permit for the border areas of Julians and Karawanks, valid from sunrise to sunset. Never had problems with border guards. Žuro enthused me for the summit, who was tracing the PP path at that time. No photos because I wasn't into photography yet then. I wasn't on the Italian side, I started going there only in the 80s. Regards!

To Mala Ponca I went this Sunday from Rateče, descended via Ovčja stran to Tamar and back to Rateče by road. Public transport to the mountains I last used in high school years, but it's not a bad thing at all. From Ljubljana it's one hour more drive, but advantage is I don't drive alone, and more views From Rateče I headed to the top of Macesnovec ski slope and from there along the supply road to the "main" road above the jumps. Before the crossroads where the road descends to Beli potok, I turned onto the forest path uphill (possible). The path is well visible despite some obstacles (branches, leaves) and I followed it easily to Spodnji Grunt. There I hit snow and the only hiker that day on Slovenian side. To Zgornji Grunt I went straight up the torrent gully and climbed to Vratca. After descent to Italian side, about 100m ascent awaited me on a well-followable steep path to the top of Mala Ponca. On the way back from the paths junction below Glave I headed to the interesting old shepherd path through Ovčja stran. It's really nice and remote there, just waiting for larch barbecue. The path needs to be followed more attentively than the previous described, several times I found myself with a question mark in my head.. The path descends along the forest and through it, later crosses stream and some scree, under Šilovec (Mihelič describes this part as "Turnči") slightly ascends into forest and descends again. Due to leaves and branches the path is a bit less visible but still followable. Later the path leads from forest to dwarf pines, after "exit" from them I found myself before a wider gully and had to search for the path on the other side, descent to the valley on compacted scree was quite unpleasant. To Rateče another good hour of walking awaited me.

Today again to Little Ponca. Ascent from Lower Mangart Lake along path 512 under Švabešč, descent past Zacchija. Today ideal conditions for walking on the nice trail (exception is only the slightly more demanding section from the junction of path 512 to the summit). Nice and easy tour, which will be truly fairy-tale when the larches glow in autumn.

Has anyone been here recently? Is there still snow on the path?

Given that yesterday on Visoka, except right before the via ferrata entrance (where there's still some small snow patch), there was none, I'm almost sure it shouldn't bother you anywhere on the way to Little Ponca anymore.
