mandatory gear for Triglav

Print
tosa13. 07. 2010 09:31:44
We plan to ascend Triglav. I'd like to know what that ESSENTIAL gear is, without which we shouldn't venture into the high mountains. Apparently there are lists of gear you must take for a two-day ascent to Triglav in the style "this is what you need and nothing more"!! Does anyone have it??? Thanks

I assume you're asking about safety gear and not clothes, shoes, etc. Better already right at the start mežikanje...given the question I assume you're not exactly at home in the vertical, probably more on secured paths.

Definitely, helmet first. Let all laugh and sneer to themselves, but we must change that thinking. A few years ago cyclists didn't have them either, today you're the biggest fool on the road if you don't have it on your head. Then I recommend a climbing harness and belay kit. I could say take two prusiks and two slings, but I can't. Better a few € more and buy a ready-made kit with belay plate. Don't buy new "fancy schmancy" kits with some hidden protections on webbing - once you fly, you can throw such a kit in the trash. Via ferrata gloves seem useless to me. True, my hands are hardened from rock, but still - cables are for belaying, not for pulling, climb on rock.

ESSENTIAL gear can fill one "Czech" backpack or just one max 20-liter one.
And otherwise, have you been anywhere in the mountains?
Proper footwear, clothes, protection against wind and bad weather, helmet, maybe self-belay kit, headlamp. Sufficient drink for the way and something to eat. And sunscreen, first aid (bandages, some bandage, gauze...). If heading to a path where you haven't been, also map. Trekking poles are useful on easier parts of the path.
Under ESSENTIAL gear certainly falls some experience and proper physical fitness. Often not just physical, but also mental readiness for expected efforts. Otherwise, on this topic there is lots of talk every year again on various forums. Do a bit of Googling and you'll find more than you think.

turbo, you said it all. My motto, "better too much than too little". Those few 100g don't weigh much... but can come in handy.

And safe ascent!

When I read such questions, a shiver runs through me, who all is venturing into the high mountains. Maybe it would be more sensible to first conquer some lower hill and read a bit of literature in that direction, then to the high mountains. No offense!

Given that you already stumbled on "gear" I assume you don't have much experience in the high mountains or don't know much. My advice is to get someone who's been up there and knows something about mountains, to accompany you up and of course back. That way the ascent to daddy will remain a nice memory and you'll happily recall it into old age. Many due to not knowing conditions, high mountains, overestimating own abilities etc.... "mess up" for life, sadly many pay for it with their lives. No problem to compile a list of necessary gear (if you want via ZS), but rather think also about the aspects that I and the writers of previous posts highlight.

Safe ascent and wonderful moments in the mountains! Lp

everyone wants to go to Triglav, jokingly said to become a "real" Slovenian... Here on the forum someone will surely be found who would go with you. I assume for 2 days, right? We can chat here on the forum about gear, physical fitness, mental state... etc. We can share experiences, opinions, advice, reprimands, criticisms. Don't take everything badly... Triglav is a serious hike and if this is your first high mountain variant, tackle it thoughtfully, without hysteria and excitement.nasmeh, but I tell you, it's not easy to take responsibility on your own shoulders. I would definitely test you with a getting-to-know-you hike. Otherwise, describe a bit more of your previous experiences (ZS ok), mileage... nasmeh

Here it's pretty well described: http://www.gore-ljudje.net/novosti/22118/
Otherwise Google finds everything.
And safe steps.

Hm, if I were to make a list of necessities in the style "this and nothing else", experiences would definitely be first. Or I'll say it like this: someone who already has a lot of experience moving in the high mountains, who knows its specifics and especially their own abilities, has much greater chances of returning from the mountain alive and healthy than someone who has a mountain of gear but hasn't gone higher than Šmarna gora. You know best what your experiences are and what your fitness is.

So as not to just preach; from gear I'd take a helmet, 2l hydration bladder, thin fleece, maybe windbreaker, sunglasses, mini first aid kit (with emergency blanket and whistle mandatory), some energy bars and a few euros for food and sleeping at the hut. That would be kind of minimum, good footwear is of course a given.

And lots of enjoyment in the mountains!

Me
Mandatory gear only boots, I DON'T HAVE other sports gear, no helmet, no good poles, no gloves, no good clothes, not even harness,....but I really take enough food with me, a month ago I walked 20 km in 1 day and took too little food and regretted it, completely exhausted barely got to the car, now on longer hikes I take at least 4 liters of fluids (sports drink + water), and food for the whole day (frutabele, sandwich, fruit....).

Maybe I'd attribute poor equipment of hikers to the fact that not everyone has money to buy such expensive mountaineering gear, as if it were gold.
Good gear, everything you need for the mountains costs you min. 2000 euros (from shoes to helmet).

@tosa
This is what I take on all ascents
-enough fluids
-enough food(not necessarily sandwich, can be just strudel or potica and someone mentioned baked polenta somewhere
-first aid
-glasses
-sunscreen
-poles
-proper footwear

If kids go with me I always take the rope too, but just so I don't worry,...
-lately a helmet hangs from my backpack, which I use as needed
-waterproof windbreaker, and multiple layers of clothes (onion system)
-of course camera and phone
-membership card for stamps, map, sometimes when I was greener also list of huts and their phones.
-pillow
and surely something else that's always in the backpack, but slipped my mind now

Aha, and maybe this too,
definitely not 2000€
anyway you buy gear gradually, not all at once, but as needed

Mate07..I think you're very irresponsible towards yourself, given that you wrote you don't have a helmet and that you've already been to Triglav, so I conclude you went to Triglav without a helmet... same goes for others who don't wear helmets for the ascent to Triglav...VERY IRRESPONSIBLE...and there are many like that...

You could have read what happened a couple days ago on Prisank and what it means to have a HEADLAMP in your backpack, which for some is unnecessary gear and you never know when you'll need it, if they had it in the backpack I think it wouldn't have ended so tragically...

Hmmm..hard to believe you'll be able to help anyone if you yourself don't know or don't want to know what mandatory gear for Triglav is...

And dot on the i - to all these comments, everyone decides for themselves, ... everyone for themselves is responsible ... the decision what to put in the backpack is individual and don't worry anymore about things that aren't in the domain of individuals, if someone happens to have a liter of water too little or some tablet too many. Experiences are those that give the most.mežikanje

Well written, I also used to go to the mountains in sneakers at the beginning, but experiences brought me so far that I had to get good mountaineering boots.

Well, you're/ we're just going on a trip for 1 morning or whole day.... unnecessary stuff like glasses, creams, cushion, ...
In summer time with nice weather you need for Triglav good boots, poles, helmet, ...

I agree too that everyone should decide for themselves... but I recommend using at least minimum standards... if he needs to be rescued and it's found that he didn't have proper equipment with him or didn't use it or had some "little booze" too much.. then he should pay for that rescue too... if he doesn't survive then his relatives... simple... I don't know why so much arguing about simple things...
