Yesterday, 31.1.2015 on Matajur from the village Matajur.
Although it was raining up to Čedad, Matajur shamelessly shone in the sun. The road to village Matajur was plowed, but there was still some light snow on it. Above the village it was a bit narrower than usual, so the shovel came in handy, with which I made some more space for parking by the road.
Snow already at the starting point around 30-50 cm. Along the road to Rif. Pelizzo there was a well-packed snowshoe track, so I rather took the hiking path following the track pulled by a skier and snowshoer. The predecessors quickly ran out of strength at breaking the track and turned back soon above the white house. I continued digging through soft snow. With snowshoes it sank to knees and beyond. Even on the predecessors' track walking was strenuous, as snow didn't yield easily. Continuation was already at the limit of my strength. From Maršinska planina I went direct path toward Dom na Matajurju. Halfway an Italian mountaineer caught up and took over digging the path to the hut. So with combined strength we broke through to the top. I finished the path past Rif. Pelizzo and by road to village Matajur.
Snow from 0.5 to 1m and more. But also fully windblown areas. On Slovenian side yesterday no one broke through yet.

Yesterday's hike I started and ended in sun, in between most of ascent in snowfall and fog. Mi2 would sing Čista jeba! Despite that it was beautiful. Finally real winter luxury.
Although it rained as far as Čedad, Matajur shone in the sun.1
The snow shovel by the road to Matajur village was also useful.2

I've admired your Matajur so many times, but never been up there. Gotta go sometime!
Where does that path on the 40th photo lead?

Photo 40 is now 33.
Dprapr, Matajur is a fairly easy hill. Especially from the Italian side (unless breaking trail in fresh snow). It otherwise offers luxurious views with minimal efforts and without excessive elevation gain. The most mountaineering and strenuous is the path from Avsa, which you can extend to the saddle below Visoka glava and across Maršinska planina to Dom na Matajurju. Back along the eastern ridge by which the path from Avsa comes, and by the old path to Planina Idrska. Check my report from 7.3.2014.

According to the info I got and judging by the upper picture, it's at most 10 cm. I think there shouldn't be any problems. nasmeh

I walked from Avsa to Mrzli vrh on Sunday, March 1st. There's still plenty of snow, I'd say at least 15 cm for sure, Mrzli vrh is nicely covered too. The path from Avsa is definitely still well filled with snow, in the morning it was quite frozen.

On Matajur on the first spring day, specifically from the Italian direction.
Start and goal in the village Matajur. The road here is normally drivable.
Above the forest line snow patches appear, which don't bother the walk so the path is normally passable. From the hut on Matajur there's a bit more snow but no winter gear needed. Poles aren't superfluous. But on that day it was very cold on top (-6°C) with strong wind. Adding some photos.
