I'm thrilled with the hribi.net site, praise to all who create it and to all those who share your experiences with others. The satisfaction you experience in the mountains you want to relive again and again and that drives you forward - new trails, new goals. I follow alpinists with interest through photos, because I know that given my age (35) I'm probably too old to start. But that's why various cables etc. excite me on the paths... I'm from the coast and at home there's no decent mountaineering club that I know of (except for retirees), could someone recommend one. I'd like to discover new mountains, maybe even more demanding ones, so it's probably better to have experienced guides with you. What do you say? Thanks for the reply

hello, too old? You're not too old, far from it, you need to start slowly (Nanos) then comes fitness, experience and consequently higher goals LP

Too old at 35? Well, I don't remember thinking that back then. Anyway, on the coast there's "Obalno PD Koper", which meets every Saturday and goes. They have a set time and place where they meet. There's also PD Sežana, and PD Ilirska Bistrica isn't that far, and across the border there are quite a few clubs nearby: Sloga, SPDT, Devin, to name the closest. There are also quite a few other clubs that do hiking. If that's just an excuse, no problem.

I notice that you've misunderstood me regarding the age. Too old probably for starting alpinism, which fascinates me incredibly. Regarding hiking you're never too old as long as there's the desire. Nanos is interesting because it has some climbing too... Pikec you have great photos.

Snežinka... I'm enrolled in alpine school and I have a 51-year-old classmate too... think about it!

For easier paths you don't need any guide. For demanding tours it's definitely good to have an experienced guide with you. If distance isn't a problem for you and you can get to Ljubljana then I recommend joining Planinsko društvo Matica but it's like this, that besides membership you pay guiding costs too (there 5-10-15-20 euros per tour), which in my opinion is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE especially for those who go to mountains almost every week it adds up to 200-300-400 euros at the end of the year just for guiding costs. I was thinking of signing up too but changed my mind. I say the best is to go to mountains ALONE only then you can experience true peace, freedom, but for demanding tours that doesn't apply there it's still better to have company. Otherwise there are many other mountaineering clubs that don't charge guiding costs, you pay only membership and even that pays off quickly because of some benefits. For me it's better to go alone than with "strangers"

If someone joins PD Kranj, can they also participate with other PDs?

zavest@, your statement isn't entirely true, because some mountaineering clubs charge higher prices for members of other PDs for trips, hikes etc. than for their own members. Among others also the largest PD in Slovenia. Nevertheless, most clubs don't make a difference if the participant in their trip is a member of a neighboring PD.

@julius, I completely agree with your statement. I've heard quite a few complaints about this . Anyway, I know a case where a female hiker went with PD Kranj, even though she's not a member there, on a hiking trip to Korzika. I don't know if she had to pay extra.

We are all members of PZS regardless of which part of Slovenia we are from. Most of the membership fee we pay for the current year goes to PZS, some of it to PD. I've also come across different prices for members and non-members. I don't think that's right but unfortunately each PD sets it their own way as it's also a source of funds for them to some extent. Mountain guides are supposed to be volunteer guides within the clubs who shouldn't be paid for leading. But it's true that lately more and more mountain guides are opting for professional guiding and thus charging for it.

I just wrote an email to PD Kranj today asking if as their member I can join hikes within other PDs, and they wrote back no problem. No one mentioned different rates. But it's really interesting what kind of tours PDs organize. For example PD Kamnik has a very good selection, also LJ Matica, while PD Kranj has nothing sensible, at least in my humble opinion. But I'm from Kranj and I'll join PD Kranj anyway

sodnick@, of course you can join excursions and hikes within other PDs. Go to the website of PD Ljubljana-Matica and check out the really good offer. But be careful with the prices too. E.g. Trip to Goli vrh on 19 February 2012, price for PD Lj.-Matica members is 10 Eur, for others from other PDs 12 Eur. The annual membership fee is also higher at PD Lj.-Matica than at all other PDs in Slovenia. Yeah, great to have an office on Slovenia's busiest pedestrian street. Last year they increased membership by as much as PD PTT lost because they had to close their office right next to PD Lj.-Matica's office. PD Kranj is not so lucky with its office, it's where it is, in the basement. Edi2@ the data on PZS guides who according to your writing are opting for professional guiding don't hold. There aren't even as many as fingers on both hands. Making profit from trips leads to loss of membership. People will go with those who offer good quality and safety plus fair price without discrimination who is from where.

Congratulations to the Ajdovščina Mountaineering Club for the exemplary event they prepared today at Čaven. With it they marked the 110th birthday of the club, 120 years of the Slovenian Alpine Association, 60 years of the Slovenian Mountain Trail and the 20th annual ascent to Čaven. It was fun and partying went on until late afternoon. Ajdovci, may the sun shine on you looong like today

Next year I plan to join a mountaineering club and I'm interested what are the benefits of membership for these 25 euros per year, besides insurance, discounts in huts and on gear.

@SamoK, on what trails would we walk if everyone in PD looked only for benefits? Have you ever thought how much those who maintain paths, cut undergrowth, mark, lead youth to mountains, organize Mladi in gore competitions and, last but not least, rescue even those who are only interested in benefits have earned? Take some time to think a bit, then write.
