Not the full traverse, but I still hoped to "stick" the report under this topic without opening a new one...mežikanje

Since bad weather was forecast we opt for a shorter tour than the previous day, hahhaaa... good idea, but it grew from short to looong 9.10h...eek
Start somewhere between S. Caterino and Lužnica, where we fumble a bit for the start, continue on path 604, past planina Granuda. Recommend visit, possible even by bike, really nice alpine pasture. Continue to saddle, where to the top of 2 Špic "just" 40 min, but since weather not promising, continue in the direction and to summit Cuel dei Pez. Sit a bit, descend same and on to Forecella Cuel Tarond. Clouds already settling over us, but still decide to continue on Sentiero Batt. Gemona. Shower misses us and moves over Muzce, we dry reach planina Bieliga, where we enjoy great views to nearby Strma peč, and descend on path 603, which later joins steep forest road all to start.
This part of traverse was still missing for me and trail is really excellently laid, marked and secured, except one part that looks "critical" at first glance, but ravine can be nicely crossed. Trail offers nice views both sides, both to peaks over Dunja and over Kanalska valley...to both pastures you can drive up and bike, and enjoy viewsnasmeh.
Day held, we were already wobbly in Frattis...

This beautiful ridge tempted me for a long time. I had been individually to Poldašnja and Dve špici, the traverse came this year. Nice autumn weather luckily accompanies solid fitness, so no obstacles.
Since only one day available, variant with Dunjski vrh and Lipnik out, so goal ridge between Velika planina/Bieliga and Poldašnja špica.
Since alone, naturally met problem of start and end far apart. Walking or running asphalt road, good 10km in between, not my thing, so helped with bike. Car left at Rudni vrh and biked to start of path 601 bit above hamlet Chiout. Two hours walking turned to twenty min nice descent. Bike hidden in ravine and continued on foot.
Path 601 to Bieliga thrilled me. Among trees steadily ascends over steep terrain above ravine. Engine warms up nicely slowly without kicking legs at start.
At Bieliga turn to path 649. Sign says 6.5 hours. Not here to run, with breaks and photos more, but day enough, from Poldašnja down even in dark.
Forest road soon to mule track, under Brdi trail replaced by good protections allowing crossings over ruined ravines. What a construction project this path over 100 years ago, can only imagine.
Soon path again to wonderful mule track, over saddle Čez Vančelo to Cuel dei Pez. Jump to summit from path short, views exceptional. Of course great viewpoint demands little rest. Goal shyly shows in distance.
View to ridge east says not much ridge traverse, need deep down under cliffs. Descent some nasty spots where path washed away, but under Monte Gosadon improves. This part drags though. To higher of Dve špici around 300m ascent, little photos and dash on. Ledge and tunnel known from before, past bivak where meet first people, descend to saddle Čanalut and down to turnoff to Pipari. Again new 300m ascent on ever nicer path and on highest Pipar summit time for longer break. Apparent closeness of Poldašnja deceives a bit, another nasty part in between, but anyway, time plenty.
Descent to ravine nastiest part of traverse, but protections ok and soon on mule track to Poldašnja. At bivak turn up, legs whine a bit, but spirit relentless. Succeeds hitting right path and soon from summit look back on traversed ridge. Behind Strma peč some thunder, time to return. By the way pick up bike and full of impressions bike home.

Hi, interested in trail condition-traverse no. 26 from end of Piper ferrata onward, can one go through scree normally or is one part collapsed and I'll have to dig trail again mrk pogled? Or same for part between Cuel dei Pez to path 604 split or further to say scree under Gosadon? Thanks in advance.

Hi Alessio.
First thanks for maintaining this exceptional historic trail.
Regarding the trail, condition as follows:
- trail under Sechieiz (Brda) normally passable, nowhere washed away or buried, protections ok
- between Cuel dei Pez and Gosadon on descent to path 604 turnoff washed away at some spots and need to scramble a bit in sand. Nothing serious. Right after descent very crumbly ravine, when trail crosses scree.
A bit further one cable end anchor washed away (direction to Due Pizzi), cable attached to normal rock pegs and end peg hammered in very crumbly rock. No danger for hikers, not exposed. Sorry didn't note the marker for this part. Under Gosadon trail ok.
- Between Due Pizzi and Piper all ok
- From Piper on descent to ravine ok, when cross ravine and climb to ledge, trail worse, but no issues. Ledge further a bit buried, but passable fine.
- at Jog di Miezegnot protections ok, especially given very bad rock

Very praiseworthy that sections marked with numbers. Now that I know whom to report to, will be more attentive to such things.
Good luck.

So, now path 601 starts above Chiout, at point 909? Three years ago it was an unmarked shortcut, but path 601 descended from Velika Planina along the military road to Chiout...

Start is at 940m at the bridge over Rio Bieliga. It runs along the gully where this stream flows. There's also a water intake in the gully, probably for the villages below.
On the scarp where the path starts, there's a sign marked 601. The path is nicely arranged. On the other side of the bridge there's space for one car.
Since the road is a rather poor footpath, I think it's great that they moved 601 to this nice mule track.
Maps already have it correctly marked (picture). On my Tabacco 18 from 2003 it's drawn as a disconnected unmarked path, a little at the start and a little at the end (?)..

thanks for all detailed info, now everything is clear to me, some of our hikers (got news from third or fourth hand and without pictures of course zmeden, so obviously I didn't know how the path condition is, they said it's not passable traverse to the ledge, that ropes still need to be installed on ascent to Miezegnotzmeden ); yes path 601 is new this year, pd Tablja/Pontebba presented it on mule track to avoid the road mežikanje , recommend you have TABACCO 018 and 019 latest edition year 2017, maybe you already know about new Tabacco 065 Julian Alps-Bohinj-Triglav and 066 Tolmin-Bohinj Mountains-Krn-Rodica and 080 Sonnblick-Grossglockner-Heiligenblut.

Alessio, regarding Miezegnot, ropes are at all important spots in the lower part to allow safe ascent. It's true there are spots without ropes in between, but nothing dangerous. Ascent to Miezegnot just isn't a via ferrata and isn't too suitable for inexperienced hikers.
As for path 649, from my view it's normally passable and safe. But less experienced hikers might think otherwise. The path isn't like say Augusto Leva, where the rope is almost continuous. But there are ropes everywhere where I think it's important.
Regarding picture 26, possibly your hikers pointed out the marked section in the picture. There really is no rope there and due to rocks it would probably be washed away every year. The passage is a bit annoying, but no problems because the slope isn't steep. But next spring it would probably be good to go there with pickaxe and shovel.

Thanks, I agree, on Miezegnot we always went when there was no rope, at least it was ok until they put it up for those our inexperienced Italians but lately they exaggerate (almost as if they had to put ropes from saddle to summit velik nasmeh ) and then instead of sending me official message via email with some pics so I can have evidence if it's truth or exaggeration and inform our PZ-CAI FVG (otherwise I have to jump on terrain and see what's happening) they rather turn orally to third or fourth persons so when I accidentally get news they are outdated and uncertainmrk pogled; I say ours should go a bit on your via ferratas to gain experience and then everything would be easier mežikanje , regarding path 649 exactly that part in picture keeps collapsing, every year need to dig out the track or maybe bypass with short variant a bit up and down if possible; for Tabacco I wanted to say it's better to have latest edition because almost every year something changes regarding paths, maybe (I doubt) that Tabacco company app includes it earlier than on map; again thanks to you and all who actively participate on HRIBI.NET.

Second stage of the traverse, Sunday, 17.10.2021
village Dunja - Dunjski vrh (Vrh Dunje) - Lipnik - Bieliga
In the morning in Mojstrana observing cloud-covered peaks and low snow line, I'm a bit worried that the long drive will be in vain. Still I continue and when descending from Žabnica towards Tablja (Pontebba), the weather improves, no snow visible on peaks either. But when in Dunja I see the NE side of Zuc dal Bora completely snow-free, I finally breathe easy. Really don't want snow on an autumn tour.
To avoid walking along the road on return, I use the bike again. Leave it in the gully at the start of (new) path 601 and drive by car to the starting point in village Dunja.
Leave the road to hamlet Chiout Pupin at the second hairpin and step onto path 602. The concreted path climbs in switchbacks and leads to the top of the hillock where a couple of houses stand. Continue on cart track which soon ends and turns into path. First few meters above gully the path goes over metal bridge/platform, then turns into wonderful path. Quite steep but very even path leads through nice pine forest to top of Clap Forat. Here Dunjski vrh appears. Looks close but looks deceive. After descent to saddle Mincigos, where path 602a leads to valley, the path shoots steeply up. Behind rise Cuel Formian things get a bit complicated. Very steep path somewhat follows "tunnel" through brushwood, somewhat crosses open grass. Among brushwood the saw on my Victor Inox often "sings" and unruly branches learn olive shape. Pity I don't have gardening "Gardena" with me. A few times I wander a bit to find path continuation. Off path on steep grass you can quickly slip or drown in brush. A bit below summit path crosses to west side where there are patches of snow. Passage to summit no longer problematic and soon I'm up.
Summit is really exceptional viewpoint, visibility incredible. Karnic Alps like on palm. In distance spot Peralbo and Coglians. View of Montaž stuns me. Profile from this direction is really exceptional. Can't turn away gaze, which is visible in pictures too nasmeh.
In complete calm and solitude I lie on summit. If I could, I'd stretch the day to infinity.
Continue towards Lipnik. Path is cut through brush and nicely passable. Obviously main path to summit comes from Lipnik direction. Path soon leaves ridge and drops deep below it. Below Lipnik it becomes obvious that Dunjski vrh didn't seem important to military strategists in WWI, so they didn't build any military path to it. But Lipnik is full of them. Leave the path that turns into tunnel and crosses grassy slope and climb unmarked mule track towards Lipnik. Below summit step on marked path coming from saddle Clap di Jovel and ascend to top. Lipnik doesn't lag in views either. It's also right in the "line" of the rest of the ridge.
Descend to saddle Clap di Jovel and step on path 601 coming from north. Soon turns into wide grassy mule track. When I spot huts on Planina Bieliga, take it directly down across meadow past planina to signpost where road and path 601 meet and start of 649. Down the already known (new) path 601 to road. Nicely laid mule track is real balm for feet. Bike waiting. On descent along road I look at boards with old photos of road through Dunja. In places it was routed quite differently than today. When driving by car you don't notice such things.
At start sad that day is over. Fantastic day and exactly such tour.

Indeed Montaž is mighty from this perspective, phenomenal pics and tour! Congrats on bike usage!!!
If I understood correctly, the final ascent to Dunjski vrh from SW is poorly marked?
like
AI19. 10. 2021 12:12:00
Yes, it's true.
But as Alessio wrote in topic Vrh Dunje, the problem is the markers who are mostly elderly, work mostly voluntary.
Where path goes through brushwood, can be followed somehow, though quite some brush needs cutting. On grass lack stones where marks can be painted, so not everywhere immediately clear where path goes. There it would be good to put stakes.
On the other hand traffic from this side is quite rare, tour gets a bit of adventurous flair. nasmeh

Naborjet Mountains are always a welcome goal. They are linked by a long, scenic ridge with plenty of nice paths. They've gotten under our skin and we like to visit them nasmeh. This time we did it from Naborjet. We parked at the sports park on the opposite side of the main road and headed via 606 towards Strešica pasture. From there we continued to Poldašnja špica and followed 649 via Pipar all the way to Cianalot saddle. There we left the ridge and returned to the start via 605. No major issues, just some extra caution needed on scree slopes. More data in the photo story ...

Coordinates of starting point (Naborjet, sports park): 46.505254, 13.442151
We park in Naborje and follow path 606 to Strešica highland1
Hmmm, everything above is foggy. Obviously the weather doesn't follow the forecast :)2
4 km of gravel leads to the highland, just right for morning meditation3
Strešica highland. Surprisingly, music can be heard behind the closed doors of the residential building4
We are still walking along path 606. It slowly turns left towards Ravna highland5
Here is a junction. We continue left upwards to Poldašnja špica6
We don't like this. The fog is thickening, nothing is brightening above7
The whole ridge might be in fog, it wouldn't be the first time. We quickly make a backup plan8
Suddenly we enter clear skies. At the top we will decide where to go next9
Looks good, we won't change the plans10
Along the path to the summit. There will be many more military structures ahead11
Poldašnja špica. The cross shows the years more with each visit :)12
It has also cleared up in the Kanalska valley13
Descent from the summit. The fixed protections are in good condition, caution due to the footing is advisable14
Bivak Gemona below Poldašnja špica. The fog is still lingering15
Start of the exceptionally beautiful path 649 ... Sentiero Battaglione Alpini Gemona16
Dunjska valley with the road that leads to Rudni vrh in numerous hairpin turns17
Slightly collapsed section of the path. With a little more care it is passable without major difficulties18
New passage into the higher basin. Previously it went right through the scree.19
View back. The path crossing the slopes is clearly visible.20
We are already on Pipar, enjoying the sun and looking around.21
After the steep descent we also visit the nearby summit, Cima Senza Nome ...22
Another of the numerous remains. There are huge numbers of them above the path too.23
Enjoying the day. The smile says it all :)24
Famous Dve špici. Beneath the right Cima Vildiver lies bivak Bernandinis.25
From Pipar the path descends properly, now we must climb to the Cianalot saddle.26
The ascent is attractive and anything but boring.27
View back at the bridge made from roadside fences.28
Golden autumn in Dunjska dolina.29
Forcela Cianalot. Here we begin descending into Kanalska dolina.30
Path 605 is excellently arranged and easily passable almost to its end.31
Some larches still display beautiful autumn decoration.32
Lower down the frost presses less and everything is more colourful.33
Path 605. Quite a few markers are renewed.34
This is quite a surprise. It's not even new, but the bypass is pure Prešeren.35
We emerge under the motorway, not far from the starting point.36
To get there we must use the cycle path, there is no other alternative.37
The 400 m long tunnel is fortunately lit, no cyclists.38
Already all at the parking lot, the one and only. The frost has obviously done its job.39
Interesting object across the road. It resembles a church, but probably apartments inside.40

For some time the idea has been buzzing around us how to traverse the Naborjet ridge from Valbruna to Dogna in one go. We waited for the right alignment of stars and they shone on just the right day. Cooling after a long heatwave set in, a nice Saturday was forecast and the daylight was among the longer ones. How right it came for us, we only learned at the end of the tour velik nasmeh

We arrived at the starting point in Ovčja vas at a completely inhuman hour. We shouldered heavy backpacks with huge water reserves and at 3 am set off on path 607. The initial road to Rauna pasture was just right for warming up and meditating in the silence of the night. It accompanied us all the way to the pasture, where birds announced the first signs of day with loud chirping. Higher on the slopes the sun was already warming us diligently in the cool morning.

Poldašnja špica is the first in the long ridge and so early we were predictably alone. In the distance Dunjski vrh hid shyly as the last, numerous intermediate gullies successfully hiding. We already knew all that from previous explorations, so we roughly knew what awaited us. First break planned at Dve špici, second at Dunjski vrh. We didn't want to overdo fast walking to avoid running out of batteries early nasmeh. On such a long path there were still too many unknowns.

From Poldašnja špica we descended to Btg. Alpini Gemona bivouac and continued on path 649. The first part of the ridge is distinctly high alpine with many exposed spots. Here safety was first, time not important at all. We're used to such terrain, so we progressed well anyway. The fixed protections helped, there are enough at key points. Around noon we huffed to the higher of Dve špici, where deserved snack tasted like never before.

The second part of the ridge to Bieliga pasture is lower but no less beautiful than the first. It runs continuously along positions of Gemona battalion, after which path 649 is named. The military path was cleared of debris years ago and well secured in tricky passages. Here we walked more relaxed and kilometers passed quickly. Soon we were at Bieliga pasture where path 649 officially ends. There with app help we found path 601 as no signpost was visible.

First markers for 601 we found at the fountain by shepherd's huts and set off for the last part of the ridge to Dunjski vrh. Markings above the pasture are renewed but hard to spot in grass. Soon we joined overgrown mule track with older markings and it led us to slopes below Lipnik. There the word overgrowth took on a new dimension. Excellently laid mule tracks overgrown beyond recognition and only narrow trail in tall grass reliably led us over steep slopes. At Dunjski vrh we were at 5 pm and time for another snack and rest. It came in handy for all that followed nasmeh

Descent to Dogna via path 602 was a story of its own. This is the only part we didn't know and maybe it was better that way velik nasmeh. Luckily we had GPS track and friend's warning that we must descend during the day. Soon it was clear why. It's all one steepness. Markings extremely few and just occasional support. No path really, more guessing where next. Step in grass here, step there, some cut bush branches, maybe even marking, path bits found, in between often nothing. Often GPS track decisive. Though never accurate in such terrain, at least indicated direction to look for continuation. Descent spiced up by crossings over steep grass where mistake simply not allowed. All outlets deep in cliffs. So meter by meter we slowly descended to Mincigos saddle. From there finally visible, somewhat trodden pathlet appeared. Followed long steep drop to Dogna where at 21:00 we finished the Naborjet adventure.

In conclusion … the most difficult part of the whole path was precisely the final descent from Dunjski vrh. Just 6 km long but drop 1700 m elevation. Just for that part 4 hours. All else mountaineering poetry. From Poldašnja špica to Dunjski vrh the ridge is superb, difficulty just right, history lovers have things to see too. More in photo story ...

Some data from Garmin:

Total walked distance: 29 km / elevation on path: 3000 m
Starting from Ovčja vas. It's three in the morning, pleasant temperature of 10°C1
So early we don't feel like talking much. Sleepily we meditate each on our own2
At Zita chapel the first signs of day appear in the distance3
In the forest it is still deep dark. Here we turn left towards Poldašnja špica4
Night is receding and the outlines of the peaks slowly appear5
On the horizon the morning sun rises slowly and shyly6
Suddenly everything around us glows in pleasant morning light7
We are already over the edge. Montaž will be the central point that day, we will see it from different directions8
Following the well-marked path 6069
Soon Poldašnja špica appears, the first summit we will visit today10
Still distinctly morning view towards Slovenia11
Summit of Sameva, we too quickly set off further12
We go in this direction. The morning is nice and cool, visibility excellent13
In the initial part of the ridge there are some of the most annoying passages14
In the scree this direction pole comes in handy too :)15
We advance slowly, rushing doesn't pay here16
The path leads like this across the collapsed slopes. Not particularly dangerous, nor easy17
Further the path enters rocky terrain where protections are sufficient18
On Pipar. We still haven't met anyone19
View of the continuation. For the ascent to Dve špici one must first descend substantially20
Great spot for a good photo. Hope various *influencers* don't read this contribution :)21
Small and large summit. Both together form the name Dve špici22
Below the lower Cima Vildiver stands bivak Bernardinis. The open part is not in the best condition23
Through the summit leads a military tunnel, where headlamp is mandatory gear24
We quite humbly stepped into the drilled mountain :)25
On the other side of the tunnel rises the higher of both peaks … Cima Alta26
Passage between both mountains right under the narrow path27
The continuation is attractive, path carved into the mountain. Without it there would be no passage28
Follows some descent, overall well protected29
The little path in vertical walls is certainly among the most attractive around30
It is well secured, yet here there must be no fear of depths31
Our goal was higher than both peaks, so we turn right here32
Through abundant brushwood we finally reach the top, where we meet a female hiker from Slovenia33
After a pleasant chat and snack at the top, we return to path 64934
Planina Granuda, in the background Šinavc with radar station on the summit plateau35
All junctions are well marked. We follow path 649 all the way36
Once there was a military bridge here, now erosion is eating into the hiking path as well37
One of the few damaged steel cables. The passage is nevertheless not dangerous38
There are also some rocky jumps …39
View back …40
View ahead to numerous mulatjere and remains of structures from the first war41
Two signs for two hikers. Each of us has his own :)42
Another section of the path where the army cut through the slopes with dynamite43
Once a bridge stood here, now the passage is secured with steel cables44
Passage from the gully to the other side past the bridge foundations45
More and more remains of the once wide military connection are visible46
Another passage past the remains of the next bridge47
Marking of the 39th Gemona Battalion, after which path 649 is also named48
Here the bridge is arranged a bit differently49
We conclude the official part of path 64950
On Planina Bieliga we find the first markings for path 60151
From this mountain pasture there is also a beautiful view of Montaž52
Even further we find the coat of arms of the Gemonese battalion53
Given the path condition, the crossing of the gully is surprisingly well maintained54
Soon we find ourselves in a new reality. The wide mulatjera is just a nice memory55
Slopes below Lipnik. It is well visible how the military path crosses the slopes56
Look back …57
For most of the slope we walk only on a narrow track in tall grass58
Dunjski vrh. From Valbruna to it we spent thirteen and a half hours59
Here we have wide smiles due to the deserved snack and rest, on descent they somewhat froze for us :)60
Montaž dominates the entire surroundings61
View back to Lipnik62
Down there we have to go. It looks nothing special :)63
Even markings can be found right at the start of the descent …64
Here the initial descent ran. Its feature is searching for *safe* passages65
Further things get a bit more complicated. Steep grass areas look something like this …66
And also like this … Across these slopes run passages that are hard to follow without a GPS track67
There is no path, only some footprints visible in the tall grass. Here the passage is in the middle of the scree68
Far below the situation calms down, the little path is mostly visible69
Last view of the mighty one. Evening shadows are already licking its slopes70
View back to the steep slopes of Dunjski vrh, which we have just traversed71
Here runs path 602. The appearance is the same as before in the steep sections, only flatter here72
Dunja is still very far below. The descent will take us quite some time73
Everything is overgrown. Tall grass covers the path74
