To Palec along the ridge above Suhim Ruševjem / conditions Sun: 4.09.2016

The weather forecast for Sunday wasn't quite reliable, so we planned a shorter tour at first: from Ljubelj to Zelenica, from there to the right ridge above Suhim ruševjem to Palec. But since fog and clouds seemed not to cross Begunjščica and Vrtača until noon, we turned toward the ridge just before the turn-off for Suho Ruševje. Searching passages through dense ruševje and steep grass isn't recommended for romantics, as it's not easy.

Once on the ridge, we regretted a bit not starting from Triangla, but for atonement we visited the last two Moži, then did the original ridge traverse to Palec. The path looks much shorter on the map than in practice on terrain, … often up and down with lots of ruševje and crumbly rock, plus some very airy spots, so from the last Mož you'll be busy for about three hours. Stick roughly to the main ridge (very steep Austrian side, less on ours), few bypasses, passages and predecessor traces visible in ruševje, but traverse not always obvious (observe terrain well), sadly no cairns left or right at dubious spots.

Otherwise scrambling on ridge from Moži to Palec (avg I, some II). Easiest to ridge via scree above the »thick rock« below Suhim Ruševjem, reverse from Palec to Moži much harder (technical and orientation) not recommended. Comparison: ridge via Mala glava to Vrtača (east ridge above Suhim Ruševjem) ~2x easier/shorter.
From Palec (or Zelenica as on top cross) easiest unmarked descent (cairns plenty) to saddle with Zelenjak (or Nemški vrh) then trodden paths or screes of Suhega Ruševja back to Zelenica, if started there.

Sunday morning on Zelenica, few visitors, most head off to via ferrata

before the branch to Suho Ruševje we turn upwards to the ridge

then a much more awkward descent where the rock crumbles

struggle with scree ... but paths through greenery and branches are partly followable

useful detours are rare, this one is one of them (so we don't use the rope)

scrambling along the ridge - locally difficulties I to II

along the ridge we more or less walk the Austrian-Slovenian border

the ridge is looong and drags on ... but now the final goal is at least visible

view back on the traversed path and towards the Moži

... and there's still plenty of it ahead of us too

finally the last ascent to the summit of Palec

Palec on the summit, ... the weather held

the easiest return is across Suho Ruševje, ...at the thick rock

upwards across the scree above the thick rock is the easiest approach to the ridge that leads to Palec

Some bastard (sorry for the term) knocked down the cairn marking the path to it from the Vrtača path. The stones lie below the path, but a new cairn is already growing.
May this scoundrel one day "pass" gallstones. jezen

After a veeeeery long period I set off to Palec this morning. Starting point Ljubelj, Hut on Zelenica, Palec. Weather beautiful in the morning, then some cloudiness, short hailstorm around 15 o'clock and beautiful again at the end nasmeh

Path OK. Met quite a few nice hikers, and we chatted a bit nasmeh

The ascent to Palec yesterday was really an autumn-winter mix. Not just in terms of colorful larches and snow-capped mountains, but also starting with warming up in sunny weather, then wind and cold, so without a hat, gloves and jacket it was almost impossible.
Palec wasn't alone yesterday, at least 9 people visited it, dog paw prints were visible too.
Later it got wrapped in fog, same for Zelenjak which was initially planned.

To spice up the hike a bit, at the big rock in Suhem rušju we decided to try going higher, drawn to the ridge between Možmi and Palec. Didn't know if it'd work. It was steep, hard without grabbing bushes to the top. On the ridge really cool rock sculptures that get your heart racing, no real path there, just know you're somewhere between Možmi and Palec, figured out exactly where only later.

To the hut at Zelenica for tea and apple strudel.

Palec 2026m on Saturday 17.11. We were a larger group with our guide Katja Žagar from the mountaineering club Valentin Stanič from Kanal. We came from all over Slovenia, also from neighboring Italy. Weather served us nicely, maybe just icy wind a bit annoying. At the saddle, glory showed towards Austria. Really a day you can only wish for. Hut at Završnica spring was open.

These two aren't cold - maybe only their fingers complained.

Wrong world. Even the ptarmigans are already crowing.

Today from Ljubelj past Zelenica to Palec.
Conditions still good/solid for now, even for ski touring, based on chat with skier who skied the dry scree.

Ascent and descent to Palec safer in early hours, as when snow softens descent gets trickier, so didn't linger long at top. Just below summit rocks and sand on path, making crampon descent harder. Due to these, pay more attention on descent to not end up where you don't want.

Today from Ljubelj to Palec and Zelenjak. Conditions excellent. Still plenty of snow, so ice axe needed for Palec. Need to cross gully with steep runout below. To Zelenjak possible on foot, but snow on approach to notch too. Oh yeah, forgot: new stamps on both summits.
