Nice experience, nice panoramas, nice weather, all top.. Gentians along the path under screes. On the path soon from Zelenica met a large ptarmigan with its mate. Path actually demanding due to scree (careful on descent)! Today despite nice weather on summit ''only'' 5 people.

Today we tried to conquer the thumb, but due to bad snow conditions (unsettled snow, powder, steepness, no foot support) the attempt failed. Nevertheless weather was pleasant, not too cold, good company and winter idyll. It will have to wait till next time. Meanwhile I'll go somewhere else. Despite proper gear (full winter equipment) snow wasn't right to go up. On way back when returning we saw fresh avalanche on Šentanski slope under Begunjščica. What can I say... great day, though didn't conquer desired goal lots of satisfaction. Smart mountaineer, hiker, alpinist knows when to turn. Nice greeting to forumers, and merry St. Nicholas without rods.

Yes, Palec succeeded for us today! Really, insanely nice above sea of fog. On way back loosely attached ice axe which stayed up there somewhere when running down, assume from pass to end of dry bushes. If someone finds it by chance and doesn't urgently need it, please let me know...

Today starting from Tinčkova hut: Road there is in quite bad condition, but doable if you don't mind your car.. Hut at ZAvršnica spring = closed, at Zelenica probably still open. On Palec almost clear but windy, cold (recommend gloves, hat), otherwise dry, no ice, snow etc. Still some gentians on grass. Met quite some hikers on path. Lower larches turning golden (for photographers). Nice day on Palec.

Yesterday, Saturday, with son we head to Palec from Ljubelj. In good weather plan to visit neighboring peak Zelenjak too. On way to Zelenica we overtake group of Styrians, think 20 of them. From Zelenica on we were alone, as early. At entry to Palec on other side of snowfield didn't find path, so climbed straight up rock. For descent found path and marked it for future. Three were coming over bushes and from Zelenjak we watched their arrival to summit. Other three plus one more coming to Zelenjak. Wonderful weather and nature. On path still some snowfields where need to be more careful.

Today after descent from Vrtača tried to go to Palec (from Vrtača summit good view of last part of path to Palec from border ridge). From junction along well visible path through bushes to 1750m. There saw sea of bushes ahead, right on scree well visible path. Interested which is right path or is path through bushes further so well visible? If scree path better, where does it turn, maybe at big boulder?

For ascent use path through bushes, for descent usually scree. When ascending, near end of bushes path turns right to scree, then reach border saddle Žleb. From there ascend right on path to Palec, or left to Zelenjak.

janez, to Palec and Zelenjak turn after about 15 min walk from hut Zelenica toward Vrtača, at small cairn right. Both paths correct. Through bushes quite overgrown. I went up through bushes down on scree.

I add a picture, made it yesterday when hiking around there. This is how the junction from bushes to scree looks that heinz and tinky talk about.

Thanks to all for the info. I'd still like to ask where the scree path starts, whether it branches off from the bush path (at what height). And a question for ajda: where was this picture taken - below or there as heinz mentions. As I mentioned, I walked about 1/3 of the path from the junction with the marked path to the summit of Palec. And thanks for the useful info.

The picture is not close-up at all, meaning it's taken towards the end of the dense thicket and there you turn right, just as heinz says.

The scree path starts exactly there where at the junction from the marked path the path through the thicket starts, only after the first meters you keep more to the right. You'll notice it very soon. So there are two at the junction, you just noticed the left one -through the thicket. For the uphill path though you'll tire yourself out honestly, much more on the scree than through the thicket. Somewhere at 2/3 of the Suho ruševje cirque the path turns right (cairn) onto the scree. Even if you continue straight into the gully, believe me, you won't get lost. You just have to continue simply to the border saddle between the two summits. And then onwards as you wish.

Both paths are also marked with cairns at the junction.

Today finally great conditions for visiting the mountains. I decided to visit Palec. Already in the morning at home on the webcam I checked if there's any snow in the mountains, since yesterday they forecasted snow above 1600 m a.s.l. No snow, rock already dry in the morning, path without peculiarities, but the cross at the top confused me, which says "Zelenica 2026"!! What is this now, Palec or Zelenica??? Let someone enlighten me, please!

On Wednesday we drove to Ljubelj and met quite a few families on the path to Zelenica hut. When we turned towards Vrtača though, we were completely alone. In Suho ruševje we kept right under the walls, where you cross snowfields several times, but no problem. At the saddle between Zelenjak and Palec we turned right, here more caution is needed when crossing steep snowfields, where footprints are made. Higher under the summit it's dry and we both enjoyed the peace and beautiful views..
