Yesterday I drove to Planina Dol and climbed to Rzenik. On the way back I also did a walk from Mačkov kot to Gradišče. Road drivable without problems. More at:

After [my] shift, [I] checked out the landslide, then to Konj and Rzenik and back via Martinj trail.

Yeah, quite a solid amount of material tumbled down. And probably more will fly down next winter/spring.
A new path is already forming in the part where the old one got buried by the landslide. It goes better left of the old one. Officially still closed.

In yesterday's forenoon, I added the mentioned peak to [my] weekly visit of Velika Planina. I think [the] last time was many years ago in winter, otherwise I would remember such a bad path section from [the] Konj junction to [the] summit. Luckily that part [is] short, very overgrown and slippery, as [the] rain soaked me well. On return, [I sheltered for] some 10 min. under Mlakarjeva hut awning. I dried [myself] only at Gradišče as [the] sun appeared too.

Konj and Rzenik - approach from Kamniška Bela and descent via pl.Dol into Kamniška Bistrica valley

Rzenik is one of the lesser known and less visited peaks in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. At around 1830 meters above sea level it is not really a mountain for the »2000+« notebook, so many hikers on the way over Presedljaj and to higher mountains in the north simply skip or bypass it. But precisely because of its remoteness the summit preserves its peace and solitude, and among the dense and high dwarf pines also a hint of pristine mountain wilderness.
What makes Rzenik interesting is the striking contrast between its slopes, as it is a mountain of two faces. From the southern side the summit looks like a docile calm grassy/dwarf pine mountain, the northern side suddenly breaks into mighty and steep walls above the Kamniška Bela valley and today counts as one of the wilder and more demanding climbing areas reserved for alpinists, its north-western wall is known for friability, about five years ago one of the largest rockfalls and breaks in our mountains happened here, which thoroughly reshaped the cirque of Kamniška Bela.
The ascent to the summit from the southern side/from pl.Dol/ is in short an easy and simple Sunday outing, from the north e.g. from Kamniška Bela the approach is a completely different story – a long and also physically demanding mountain tour which despite marked sections requires much more mountaineering seriousness and also some climbing on all fours to Konj.
Well, in summary: Rzenik is not a peak that attracts with height or fame, but with character and pristine beauty… and if we want to get to know both faces of Rzenik, the circular tour over Presedljaj is almost the self-evident choice and recommended direction: from the harder on the ascent to the easier on the descent.
map - display of the area as rendered by the UI and part of the map of the Grintovci area 1:25.000 If you plan a circular tour, it is best to start in the Kam.Bistrica valley, but to avoid too much walking on the main road1
parking: right next to the main road under the weekend settlement Kopišča, parking is of course free, fortunately there are no parking machines and ticket offices for charging like in Bohinj and Kranjska Gora yet.2
In the Kamniška Bela valley we choose the marked mountain path to the Presedljaj saddle, while two unmarked paths also ascend towards Korošica: one past the Orglice waterfall, over Skok and across Šraj pesek under Veža3
past a huge avalanche and rockfall: the North face of Rzenik is considered one of the most friable in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, in 2021 there was an extensive rockfall. Approximately 200 meters high and about 100 meters wi4
The accessible path to Presedljaj proceeds without major difficulties. Due to an avalanche, it is somewhat altered in the lower part, but the detour is well-trodden and the passage is undemanding.5
Higher above the forest a very nicely laid out, comfortable and shady path to the Presedljaj saddle, in gentle curves and without gymnastics over fallen trees6
At the bench and viewpoint rest area - on the so-called promontory, opposite you can see Kam.Dedec and the beginning of Zeleniški špice with Staničev vrh7
View of the northern walls of Rzenik and a large rockfall that has radically changed the appearance of the cirque8
Sedlo Presedljaj – view of the southern side and the picturesque and rugged ridge ahead of us leading to Konja. The saddle or pass Presedljaj 1614m connects the solitary mountain valleys of Kamniška Bela and Lučka Bela in9
Thoughtfully chosen and well-secured path – which mostly runs a bit along the ridge, but mostly via detours of the rugged ridge on the northern side.10
The protections are w.p. and everywhere there at the key points where it is necessary for a person to have enough sense of security.11
The last steep ascent below the summit of Konj requires a bit more caution, but the passage is facilitated by a steel cable12
View back down to the approach ridge and to the Presedljaj saddle (in the middle of the image) from where paths leading north towards Korošica are visible13
At the summit of Konj - with a view of the nearby Vežica and Vršiči, and above them towers Ojstrica14
View of the vast Dleskovška plateau and its gentle green peaks15
View of the descent towards pl. Rzenik and the large Velika planina in the background16
View ahead - to the SE approach to Rzenik, where between the dwarf pines a cut and sawn path branches off to the top, in places it rises quite steeply, but the ascent is short and technically undemanding and does not cause any17
Rzenik – at the top, the mountain has no summit register and no box 18
Rzenik is a beautiful viewpoint and the highest peak of the ridge between the wild and precipitous world of Kamniška Bela and the green southern side above pl. Rzenik and the plain or pl. Dol on the southern side, from it one can practically see 19
From the summit of Rzenik towards planina Rzenik leads a comfortable path routed through cut passages in the dwarf pine; in summer it is quite hot! Although unmarked, orientation is simple as the direction remains clear at all times20
Descent to planina Rzenik; it lies on the sunny side above the forest line and is squeezed between grassy slopes and belts of dwarf pine; with its modest appearance it preserves the special charm of a remote mountain world21
Planina Rzenik is small and idyllically beautiful, with only one hut on it, the renovated Mlakarjeva bajta, for which now – according to the locals' accounts, the Kamnik priest probably takes care, and as befits for the thirs22
From planina Rzenik we descend along a well-trodden path through the steep wooded slope down towards planina Dol23
Planina Dol – is large, spacious and more urban, accessible also by road, from this side at the crossroads of paths for Presedljaj, for pl. Konjščica and for Velika planina, and for the valley Kam.Bistrica via Dols24
For descent into the valley - signpost for across Dolski graben in the direction for Kamniška Bistrica25
The path through Dolski graben is undemanding, shady and mostly comfortable for walking, but on individual sections the consequences of windthrow are still noticeable. Because it slowly descends in numerous bends and along a long slope prot26
from the mountain path we reach the forest road and cover a part of the route on it, but it is worth paying some attention to orientation and choosing the right direction towards the starting point, here some additional would be welcome27
And after a few shorter and quite overgrown paths or shortcuts we reach the main road …28
… we arrive in the valley, in Kopišča – now a settlement with some weekend houses and memorials of mass graves from post-war killings in 194529
and another few dozen meters, and we are at the parking lot where we left the car in the morning30
