Hey la
maybe someone knows up to what height there is snow in the Kamniks and what kind of snow it is (I mean hardness, not color, hehe,..).
I have (at least) two ideas for tomorrow: Storžič (via Žrel or from Kališče) or maybe to Brana, but it is probably already "too dangerous" for folks like me... I am used to hills, not too much snow (I have winter gear). Can someone tell me, advise which of these paths are suitable?

Not true. This is the Western gully on Storžič and there might already be snow in it. And if you have winter gear it doesn't mean you know how to handle it (you didn't say how experienced you are with ice axe and crampons). Best to stick to mid-altitude, where there won't be problems.

Thanks for the reply and lots of snowy mountain pleasures to you too.

I was on Krvavec on 11.11.2007 and there was still no natural snow there. Nor on Zvoh (maybe some on the north side; I was looking at the south side from Krvavec).

Has anyone been on Storžič this week? On Saturday we plan ascent from the south side, too many choices. To me the most interesting variant is from Laško via Kališče. All approaches from that direction mention increased slip risk - how above standard is it? Approach via Javornik plain goes through a gully. As someone mentioned, higher chance of snow there, description even mentions avalanches (which shouldn't be a problem now yet). Compared to eastern approach, is this direction currently more passable? I've only been to Storžič from the north. Winter metal gear will be minimal - poles (only I have crampons). But enough fitness and know-how.

Best variant from Mač to Kališče and then to the top. From the valley only snow patches visible, summit is bare. If it keeps blowing like that, ascent won't be pleasant. Also good to have ice axe with you and more crampons than you mention.

Well, yesterday it was snowing already in Laško. Nowhere enough snow to help with crampons or ice axe. Just enough to make it more slippery. Almost no ice on the path either. Hut was open.

In the Julijci 4th degree avalanche danger is announced, what do you think how it is in Kamnik-Savinja Alps?

In Kamnik-Savinja Alps the danger is smaller but in high mountains also high (highest on north sides of Grintovci above Czech and Kranjska hut. Outside the main Grintovci ridge the danger is smaller (Krvavec area, Velika Planina, Raduha...)

If someone heads to high mountains on untracked paths, count on wading through soft breakable snow.

I went today from Kališče to Storžič, most of the path I was trudging in places with drifted snow crampons and ice axe are recommended - it took quite some time to form steps so patience when crossing is not superfluous. Descended via the gully to Planina Javornik.

In Trentino in Italy an avalanche has already been triggered that buried two tourists and four mountain rescuers under it. I also think that due to the unfavorable base, especially at altitudes where it hasn't fully consolidated, great danger of avalanche release!.

The report of the avalanche that claimed lives is described in more detail on POP-tv.

In the high mountains of the Julian Alps many wet snow avalanches triggered during recent precipitation, later the snow froze, new snow is mostly windblown, writing for the area Upper Krma - Kredarica where slopes are very icy and without crampons and ice axe no progress possible, similar conditions also in Kanin area where outside ski slopes everything is icy and very dangerous for slipping. Last snow fully windblown.

One more thing if anyone's interested, road to Krma passable only to Marčun (last weekend on the right) further water made devastation on the road.

crampons, ice axe, great measure of caution and concentration, and making right! decisions. If anyone read comments on 24ur.com knows what I think about it. That comments are written by ignorants who haven't even smelled mountains in winter. Stay safe

often when reading these comments about mountain accidents I get feeling they want to say that already by going to mountains "guilty". Very sorry for every victim, probably loved mountains like us here from hribi.net safe step to all ahead!

In most of the Julian Alps it is snowing, high altitude tours discouraged especially routes with slope greater than angle of repose which is 32 or more degrees. snowfall forecast next week too. regardless nice Sunday awaits us, suggest easier ascents (Baba, Viševnik...) much safer in Karavanks though today wind up to 70 km/h.
