Špik

In the coming days there won't be ideal weather for Špik, but if you two are so persistent, I can write that everything is "damp and wet", of course due to the daily rain, so no sinful thoughts. Even when the sun shines there's lots of moisture, otherwise not much snow, attaching pic from yesterday,

Excellent use of vacation and ascent of the beautiful mountain named Špik. Via Krnica on the marked trail to the summit in about four hours, wonderful views accompanied us all the way, as can be seen in the attached photos. Descent via the circular trail through Kačji graben, where quite a bit of caution is needed, but still better down this trail than up. Then the trail to the car, total descent time just over three hours. It was quite hot, most of the walking is in the sun, therefore it is necessary to carry at least three liters of liquid. I recommend both the drink and of course this beautiful tour.

Equipment suitable for high mountains (sunglasses, helmet, headlamp, first aid, water). For the trail I advise avoiding Kačji graben for ascent—strenuous, and especially descent, where climbers have already met with fatal accidents or stumbled and rolled over steep trough-like overgrown ledges.

ASCENT VIA KAČJI GRABEN KILLS, DESCENT DIDN'T SEEM SO HARD TO ME, MAYBE BECAUSE I RAN FROM ŠPIK SUMMIT TO PIŠNICA!!

Parked two hairpins below Mihov dom, then with Marjeta we headed to Koča v Krnici. From the hut over Gruntovnica, past Gamsova špica, and via Lipnica to the summit, which was occasionally foggy, so no special views. But there were quite a few of us up there, Jure with his group, and two from Ivančna Gorica, who join the opinion that the "tower" stays where it is. Path as such quite ordinary, just a bit roundabout, in the summit part some protections that are not damaged. We descended towards Kačji graben or Črna voda, as written at the junction below Špik. Upper part of course on scree, middle part as everyone knows very slippery, so need quite some caution, lower down better again, but also hot. We too met a family with an older couple from Ljubljana, they go to Špik every year, the husband who is already 79 hopes to make it next year too. And as a curiosity, even after 13.00 we met 5 of them still below half the path, whether, if at all, they reached the top. Definitely set off too late. Marjeta then turned right below, I of course had to go up to the road for the car, went past teta Pehta's hut, where they were just preparing for the show.

With my girl we went on Saturday 15.08. via Kačji graben towards Špik and I must say we really liked the path, especially because the sun is still hidden in the morning and doesn't cause too much heat issues. Caution needed especially on parts where good foot grip on ground is needed (lots of moisture) but no major dangers on the path itself we noticed. As the colleague said scree kills and if not well fit better not tackle it, it will take huge strength and will; at least it did for me. Still we were at the top in under three hours and wonderful view compensated all the toil and cursing. Descent via Lipnica to Krnica dragged like Monday and nice hot weather didn't ease descent at all. Strenuous but still nice tour.
Enjoy if you go, take lots of water, helmet will come in handy too.

Given that it has become quite warm and the snow no longer bonds to the ground, I think we should put ideas of visiting the high mountains out of our heads for a while, especially exposed peaks, slopes. Avalanches are still flying everywhere and on such slopes the avalanche danger is far from over. I myself had quite a few ideas about visiting "real" mountains, mainly the Martuljek group, but due to conditions I'll abandon that intention, plus the weather will be bad this weekend. Not worth risking, enough GRS interventions for this year. What if it all doesn't work out... according to our plans? Nice day, Juš

Hello

I'm interested in conditions for ascent to Spik. I'd be grateful to anyone who summited the peak recently for info on access possibilities.

I'm also interested in what both paths to Spik are like. Many snowfields? Thanks all for reply.

conditions 25jun2010 were such that path from Kačji graben ok, on scree above some small snow, but path from Krnica looks full of snow above scree. so if going without crampons (only ice axe) path from graben better.
