The rope can really help because there are a couple of pegs hammered in for descent,

Well, that's useful info. Definitely worth knowing.

Yesterday my brother and I did the tour pl. Blato - pl. Krstenica - pl. Jezerce - Jezerski preval - pl. pod Mišelj vrhom - Koštrunovec - Mišelj vrh - Mišeljski Konec - Hribarice - Vrata - Za Kopico - pl. Dedno polje - pl. pri Jezeru - pl. Blato. The path is mostly dry to Mišelj vrh, towards Mišeljski Konec an ice axe comes in handy. Over Hribarice all the way to the middle of Za Kopico valley there's still quite a bit of snow. We only needed ice axe and crampons when crossing under Vršaki, where they come in handy.
Nice but long and strenuous tour. Pictures and details at

Whenever I passed by Vodnik hut, I wished the time would come to visit this beautiful mountain, but some other goal always took priority. This time I finally made it. The advantage of solo hiking is setting your own goal and departure from home. I got up at 1 a.m. after midnight, from the parking lot under Konjščica I set off just after 2 a.m. I chose this path for walking in the dark, as I know it well, if I went from Planina Blato, I'd have more trouble at night. To Veliko polje it went smoothly, but there due to darkness and fog I slightly missed the path to the planina under Mišelj vrh. After fifteen minutes battling scrub I finally hit the path leading under Koštrunovec. From there dawn was breaking and the junction with cairns was impossible to miss. The clearly visible path, which higher up sometimes disappears, took me to the saddle Na nizkem. I turn right and soon I'm at the summit. I was a bit sorry I missed Koštrunovec, it'll stay for next time. Follows the nicest part of the path, ridge traverse to Mišelj konec. No technical difficulties on the ridge, in one hour I reach Mišelj konec. I descend back to the saddle and turn onto the path to Dolič. Snow is soft, so down quickly. I returned via Velska dolina and stopped at Vodnik hut too, which they're still thoroughly renovating, officially opening on 15th this month. Sun was scorching, so I quickly headed back to Pokljuka. Planšarija at Konjščica was still closed today. For the tour with several fifteen-minute breaks I took ten hours and a few minutes.

This ridge is really beautiful, now all sprinkled with alpine roses, a few clouds just spice up the views and pictures. I would ask this: did you reach the cirque under Debelim vrhom via Lazovški pass and where did you ascend to Mišelj konec?
Do you follow any little path there in the cirques? Thanks for the answer in advance.

In the cirque behind Debelim vrhom we came from Lazovski preval. One could say along the ski touring variant, only now snow lies only in some very shady hollow.
We continued to the saddle Čez Hribarice and descended a few dozen meters towards Dolič or Velska dolina. Soon a little path branches off to Mišeljski greben and you reach the ridge between Mišeljski Konec and the unnamed summit marked with height 2344m on the map.
Jump to the top of Mišeljski Konec, back to the aforementioned summit and along the ridge to Mišelj vrh.
Finally descent into the wonderful Mišeljska dolina and then to Velo polje, where we spent the night.
In the cirque behind Debelim vrh mostly pathless. You follow here and there a trace, not sure if human-made or just chamois trails, but direction is clear. Towards Hribarice several valleys rise gently, bringing you nicely out of the deep cirque.
The tour is of course doable in one day, but we took time to visit friends at Velo polje and returned home the next day.

When two years ago I managed to conquer only Mišelj vrh via Koštrunovec from Pokljuka, the desired one-day solo tour soon formed in my mind, which I finally realized on a wonderful summer day.

Planina Blato - Planina v Lazu - Lazovski preval - Mišeljski preval - Koštrunovec - Mišelj vrh - Mišelj konec - Hribarice - Mala Zelnarica - Kopica - Mala Tičarica - Dedno polje - Planina pri jezeru - Planina Blato

From Mišelj preval I didn't descend to Mišeljska planina along the marked path, but turned left onto pathless terrain under the initial ridge of Škednjovec and easily descended via nice passages to the little path in Mišeljska dolina. Two years ago from the little path I spontaneously took the route that funnyboy nicely drew on picture 18 (no cairns there), as the passage nicely opens under the slope of Mišelj vrh. This time I decided to go lower to the second possible junction/passage with cairns.
I met quite a few people who missed this junction. When turning from Mišeljska planina onto the little path in Mišeljska dolina the path moderately ascends for a while, then soon turns slightly right into denser low scrub, so the turnoff for Koštrunovec is apparently harder to spot. At the fork in the scrub the classic path turns slightly left under the steep slopes on the right side, slightly right is the path to Koštrunovec with a well-visible medium-sized cairn about 2m higher.
Personally I prefer the upper approach, it's nicer and easier.

Let the rest of the pictures tell.

Maemi, your descents from Mišeljski preval are really unique, although I also did this passage many years ago in the opposite direction from Mišelj vrh towards Planina Krstenica right under the walls of Škednjovec and at that time greatly disappointed my guide because I scolded him for not knowing the path!
You did a wonderful tour, but I assure you you'll surely have to repeat it, because one wants to see all these beauties multiple times, once simply isn't enough!
Bravo, you're made of the right stuff!nasmeh

Thanks ločanka!
During the tour while ascending to Mišelj vrh via Koštrunovec I also thought of you nasmeh
You know I have exactly that in plan, to relive it all on some nice autumn day when nature dresses in different colors. Certain tours really anchor in the heart and Mišelj vrh never disappoints, we both know that well nasmeh

Rudno polje - Mišeljska dolina - Mišelj vrh - Mišeljski konec - Velska dolina - Rudno polje

"My Mišeljc" from peak to end, always wonderful, a summer piece of paradise, so I climb it for the third year in a row nasmeh
To me the most beautiful at the start of summer, when the ridge is like a real botanical garden. The path is dry, only on the descent via scree from Mišeljski konec some snow patches persist, easily bypassed. Unmarked/poorly marked entry from marked path in Mišeljska dolina used to trouble many, now equipped with huge cairn that stands out from afar.
This is the path where silence broken only by large herd of chamois under ridge, marmot whistles and wild encounter with viper sunning among flowers (many this year, caution advised).
Experienced charming sight too, when cows driven from valley to Velsko polje. Like little children finally arriving at vacation...lots of joy, jumping and orchestra of bells nasmeh

Nice, Anja. I also always like this little ridge, especially in high season, when Očak is a real ant hill (well visible to naked eye), here solitude reigns. On traverse never miss Koštrunovec from Planina pod Mišelj vrhom.

On Saturday my colleague and I also traversed or climbed this ridge. When we met at the meadow after Mišelj vrh we had some trouble where to turn right in Mišeljska dolina. We had several different reports and each was slightly different. Cairn for turn into Mišeljska dolina is well visible, but for Koštrunovec sadly none. We went too far and turned right only where slope already eased a bit, arriving practically under Mišelj vrh. Then searched passages back and had to cross quite annoying scree between M.vrh and Koštrunovec. Real turn right should be right at start of Mišeljska dolina where dense dwarf pines begin.
On Koštrunovec we analyzed continuation. That gully everyone mentions worried me a bit from view on Koštrunovec. Approaching from left, we saw better path left of it on narrow grassy band around bigger rock (where cairn was too) and so with little effort and practically no difficult climbing got above mentioned gully. From there slope eases more and no issues. Recommend bypass gully on left.
From Mišelj vrh to Mišeljski konec views breathtaking and traverse wonderful. Thought whole traverse along ridge edge, but at Mišeljska glava had to turn and bypass on left-south side. Also mostly searched passage last peak before saddle to Mišeljski konec. Quite nasty crossing on steep scree. Ascent to Mišeljski konec unremarkable. Thought direct climb from top to Hribarice possible, but saw better return to saddle and descend existing path below Hribarice peak.
For whole traverse from Planina pod Mišelj vrhom to Mišeljski konec with breaks (ca 1h) exactly 5 hours.
The junction to Mišeljska Valley is marked with cairns. Above, ruins are visible where we first looked for the junction to Koštrunovec and did not find it. The terrain is somewhat steeper than it looks.1
Since we went too far up the Mišeljska Valley, we had to search for passages back to Koštrunovec. In between we crossed scree quite high up (very steep).2
This is how our path to Koštrunovec proceeded.3
I tried to sketch the path where we two climbed the hardest part with little effort. We bypassed the gully on the left side, which proved to be a smart decision.4
This is how GPS traced our path.5
This is how the cairn was placed, by the rock on the left above the gully.6
This was taken much higher when we got above the gully. View on Koštrunovec.7
View from Mišelj vrh towards the ridge still awaiting us.8
View back when we had already covered most of it. The last two peaks we bypassed on the south side as they were too steep.9

Yesterday we set off in pitch dark from Pokljuka on path to Mišeljska planina and there found passage under Mišelj vrh. Along path only chamois and cairns to Koštrunovec accompany us, where view opens to kingdom, views to Bohinjski konec accompanied us already on ascent to summit. Chimney no problems and on top time for views, panoramas and forging new plans.
Continue along ridge to Mišelj konec where longer break again and descent to marked path between Hribarice and Dolič and Velska dolina. At Vodikov dom refill some liquid and continue to start.
Tour very nice, solitary and pleasure walking, views over varied terrain priceless. Peaks in this part today not much visited...

This time we tackled the Mišelj ridge in the ideal line over Koštrunovec. The turn to it is marked with a cairn, but unfortunately not the only one around. First-timers will likely have trouble identifying the right one. From Koštrunovec to Mišelj vrh we ascended the right gully with one short UIAA II move.

The ridge continuation to Mišelj konec is enjoyable with some exposed spots requiring a confident step. We descended to Velska dolina and continued to Vodnik hut. From there to Rudno polje it was like a promenade. We met masses of Triglav climbers, despite the late hour more or less tiredly following their goal nasmeh.

Approximately here a path branches off to the right into the scree towards Koštrunovec, which runs roughly under the foot of Mišelj vrh4

At the summit of Koštrunovec. In the back is the passage to Mišelj vrh. At the end of the green part of the ascent we took the right gully6
