Veliki Travnik (Turnovka)

The topic belongs under Travnik, as we spent most of the time wandering in this area.
We didn't reach Travnik itself, but were always under it. The aim of the trip wasn't Travnik anyway.
We climbed this ridge with Milan in January two years ago, just less snow then. The ridge allows different approaches and variants, so you always discover something new. We took turns trailbreaking: pensioner/young middle-agedcool
After two hours we realized we'd only broken 2km, so we pondered a bit. The pensioner (me) wasn't in a hurry, but my buddy had afternoon work. Snow was over 50cm at approx. 1200m asl. Sometimes with icy crust, making walking difficult. Terrain steep at times, we could barely climb.
So we decided to descend down the gully. Water flows in the gully, surrounded by nearly vertical wooded slopes. Descent went well for us. It started snowing and soon we were in real winter idyll. Snack and rest under the wooden roof of "Pri Planinc". No beer in the water trough, but a nice shelter in the blizzard that formed.
Exploratory hike without special goal with new ideascool
These lonely/hidden corners are beautiful...

14.10.2020 Tackling the exploration of this ridge again. Unlike last visit it's now bare and snow starts a bit higher.
Initially aiming for Travnik, I give up due to difficult trailbreaking. Snow at 1200m asl from 30cm to 50cm. Wet, heavy on sun-facing slopes, icy crust in forest shade. Broken, bent, uprooted deciduous trees hinder walking. Sun, SW wind warm it, snow on cornices gets heavy causing extra breaking. Branches, ice chunks fall from crowns and 30min before Travnik I turn.
Tired from trailbreaking, I descend to Žep gorge.
At Planinc, I drink a bit of beer and head home in warm +15°C.

Yesterday first time at the Travnik hut from Žep stream valley. Snow starts already below Počka planina on the forest slope. A bit above the hunting hut there were no more tracks....except deer tracks, but I persist and trailbreak to the Travnik hut. velik nasmeh Also poor markings caused some trouble around Počka planina. Didn't have strength to the summit, too much wind-packed snow, and wet snow soaked my boots despite gaiters.
Beautiful places, worth repeating. cool

Been wanting to go to this area for a while. Still memories of autumn trailbreaking in snow. I'll wait a bit more until it melts.
thanks for info

Travnik Streams full of water and waterfalls merrily roaring. Above 1500m still some snow. Cornices with snow cover over a meter high. Thickest snow cover on road, clearings and paths. It sinks to old snow base and not too troublesome. Nice sunny day and windy too! regards

Far from home means we rarely visit the peak and Veliki Travnik is a good two hours' drive away. Unfortunately, the weather didn't favor us and from Vodole planina we walked more or less in fog and cold. The path is slippery at times but passable without major issues and runs through the forest and partly along the ridge.

We went to check how much snow there is in these parts. On Veliki Travnik and Turnci I'd say about a meter. Path: Planina, Veliki Travnik, Turnca and descent to Planina.

Hello,

in warmer days (I reckon June) I plan to do a part of SPP, which would include Ljubenske Rastke - Dom na Smrekovcu - Komen - Veliki Travnik - Koča na Travniku - Ljubenske Rastke.
Since I'm not exactly from around here, I'd need some rough advice on the planned route, is it suitable for a circular tour? How much time would it take?

Also, on the official mountaineering association website some sections to Dom na Smrekovcu are closed, maybe some obstacle on this route because of that?

I'm sending you a part of the circular route that I've used before. Parked at the sharp bend of the road from Rastke, which leads to the farm, which is otherwise the starting point for Komen. Continued into the gorge of Žep stream, where there's a small bridge over Žep and marked path leads to V. Travnik approx. 2 to 3 hours walk. Then continue to Hlipovec saddle and on to Komen approx. 1 to 2 hours. Descend on marked to the farm, which is the starting point and on asphalt road back to the bend approx. 2 hours.
This is a fairly easy variant without Smrekovec. But you can continue from Komen over Krnes to Smrekovec and then return back to Komen. For this variant there's a ridge variant, which is marked and the easiest. The others I wouldn't describe, as they are mixes of marked/unmarked and require quite good terrain knowledge.
best regards
I have marked the course of the path with a yellow line.1

If you want to start from Rastke, and cover Smrekovec and Travnik in one go, it's best to first visit one of these peaks, then cross the entire range to the next, and then descend back to Rastke. But it's a full-day tour.
Regarding the passability of the path itself, it's mostly about fallen trees, which can pull you a bit off the marked path, so map and maybe mapzs for better orientation.
Best regards

I suggest driving under Hlipovec, go to Travnik and the hut, then east on marked to Smrekovec and back the same way to the starting point. The path is easy and very pleasant, it will take 6-7 hours.
At the beginning of August you'll refresh yourself with blueberries all the way.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, based on the above mentioned routes I'll probably go for the one described above, meaning parked at the starting point for Komen at the bend, and start towards Travnik. Then along the ridge to Smrekovec and back.

The ridge path also doesn't look demanding, so I hope for a nice trip in these parts velik nasmeh

Hello,

last week I finally tackled the really wonderful circular route Ljubenske Rastke-Smrekovec-Komen-Travnik-Ljubenske Rastke.
The best thing about all this was of course the weather, it rained the day before, so no heat.
Start very easy from Ljubenske Rastke for a while on asphalt, then I branched off (Krumpej) and then to the hut on Smrekovcu. From there to the top of Smrekovec and then along the entire ridge to the top of Travnik and then also to the hut on Travnik itself. There I met a friendly older gentleman who described in detail the history regarding this ridge and also the hut on Travnik. After all that, nicely slowly back to the valley to the start.
Distance hiked 25km, elevation 1467m. Walking for over 6 hours, without stops. Started at 6:00, finished at 14:00. So really fantastic tour, which I'll surely repeat.

Those were just above 1500 meters, but not ripe everywhere yet. There aren't many of them anyway.
