On Saturday I'm taking my parents from Dolenjska on a trip to Kamniška Bistrica. As far as I remember, there's not much view of the mountains from there, so I'd like to drive them somewhere higher along the way to have a view of the mountains they used to visit in their younger years. I have Velika Planina in mind - can someone tell me how far you can get by car? I also recommend any other ideas (gondola is not an option) for viewpoints in the Kamnik, Škofja Loka area, Kranj surroundings...? Thanks and best regards!

nice view from Sv. Jošt Kranj. Access by car on asphalt. Problem might be fog, as these days it's somehow the upper limit at this height 860 masl. Also upper gondola station at Krvavec is well accessible by road

By car to Velika planina will be a bit harder, as I think only weekenders have access to their huts. You can get close to Domžalski dom, if at Črnivec pass (902 masl between Kranj and Gornji grad), you turn to Podvolovjek. This is also shortcut to Logarska dolina, for those coming from western Slovenia. Drive about 9 km and at Kranjski rak turn left to Nadinih njiv and further as far as it goes.
Otherwise interesting is also panoramic road between Logarska dolina and Solčava, offering nice view on Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe.

joc001 thanks for info - I think Velika planina is out, as the hikers are unfortunately very poorly mobile.  Yes panoramic road is also super, for now a bit out of reach, but maybe some other time.Lp

Or road from Korensko sedlo towards Brvogi and further to Železnica. If there is snow this variant is out, because the road will not be passable.
Otherwise it's nice panoramic road with view on Julijce.

Klin, thanks for the idea. I've already walked this road on foot to Blekova planina and further to Trupejevo poldne and they really are nice places and view on Špik and its mates is unique.Realizing there are quite a few options for mountain lovers who can't hike much more, but can at least enjoy views.

Exactly one km before border crossing Korensko sedlo, check road km signs, turn sharply right after good 10 km you reach Železnica. Left turnoffs (3) just ignore

Yesterday with my friend who walks with difficulty we drove to transmitter Škrbina on Mežakla.
To there leads quite solid forest road from first main left junction near Rekarjev rovt or before reaching the so-called Ravne. From there to goal we hit three intersections (road forks), we choose in order: left, right, left. Just before reaching goal, road drops a bit. At end turning circle/parking.
Friend was very enthusiastic, as long hasn't visited such prominent viewpoint.

The old castle above Kamnik offers quite nice views over the mountains.
Ambrož above Krvavec and further to Krvavec or to Kriška Planina.

Now that this thread has revived, I see I was rude and didn't report where I took my parents. We drove to Jošt, due to clouds there weren't many views, but they were still happy with the altitude and mountain atmosphere.

I remembered two more destinations accessible by car the day before yesterday, when I did a circular tour from Jesenice via Potoška Planina. This is indeed one of the interesting, road-accessible pastures, from where there is a nice view far and wide across our surroundings. Today my friend, who has trouble walking, and I first drove there and later continued to Planina Stamare. For this one I recommend leaving the car some (200-300) m before the end, at the turning point before the landslide from Kamnitnik, as the last meters of driving, when the road becomes very bad, are quite dangerous.
The pastures and views enthused a person who didn't think he would ever reach them.

Me too. But it's especially attractive for people who have trouble walking.
A bit of advertising for the friendly shepherds' good offer: tasty original buckwheat porridge with cracklings (generous portion)-2€, sour milk (natural)-1.5€, beer bottle-2€.

Some more mountain spots/viewpoints reachable by car:
-Hunting hut Talež on Jelovica
-Planina Goška Ravan on Jelovica
-Vodiška Planina (Partisan hut) on Jelovica
On this plateau there would surely be more..
Today it was really nice and quite peaceful at those three places.

A nice option for those with limited mobility is also driving along the panoramic road to Golte to the parking lot at the Alpine Garden or further to the chapel and Mozirska Koča.

Heinz, from your post I conclude that Talež, Goška Ravan and Vodiška Planina are accessible via the same road? Can you please write from where this road ascends and what condition it's in?
I only know Vodiška Planina and the hiking path to it from Kropa.
