Visoki Kanin

We haven't visited Kanin for a long time, so we headed there via our favorite variant, from Neveja Saddle. The intention would soon have been thwarted by morning rain, which wasn't in any forecast. Just a few minutes before parking, it stopped and a clear sky appeared nasmeh

. Afternoon showers were forecast, but we hoped for the best and set off ...

We climbed to saddle Bela peč past Rif. Gilberti and continued more or less horizontally towards bivouac Marussich. There we overtook numerous visitors, then turned into the slope towards ferrata Rosalba Grasselli. Ferrata reaches C grade, cables renewed but loose in places. Lots of free climbing too, overall it reminded us most of Plemenice. From bivouac we thus reached intermediate Vrh Krnice in a good two hours and then the final goal Kanin. More visitors there, mainly from ferrata Julija direction. From Slovenian side we met no one. Once very visited peak is simply too far from the valley for average hiker. Much more easily accessible from Italy, and routes more attractive nasmeh

We descended Slovenian side past former Kanin ski area. There immediately catch the eye abandoned and decaying machines they couldn't manage to store in dedicated garages. Sad and negligent from managers. From D station we climbed to Škrbina under Prestreljenik and then descended towards Prevala. In between a shower drenched us that piled up in few short minutes. Luckily we had all rain gear and were fine velik nasmeh

The large parking lot above the ski lift is free. The night rain has just stopped.

The atmosphere has cooled considerably, but for us it is the optimal working temperature :)

We go a short distance along the road above the ski lift and soon we are on the forest trail.

Higher there is a fork for planina Goriuda and koča Gilberti. We continue along 635.

The roots of this path are military, like most in the vicinity.

The famous wall of Bela peč, where many famous climbers were forged.

Judging by the monuments, quite a few ended their earthly life here.

Due to the early hour we encounter lots of curious marmots and ibex.

A little further and we will be at the bivouac …

We didn't expect it to have so many visitors :)

They are everywhere around and not shy at all.

The bivouac is named after Elio Marussich, an alpinist from Trieste

The interior is clean and tidy, there are nine sleeping places

We go back a little and turn uphill. There are no direction signs, only small red triangles indicate the path

They are a bit dated, but still followable. They mark the Tavisoka Rosajanska pot

Part of it runs along the Rosalba Grasselli via ferrata

It is equipped with numerous new steel cables

Their characteristic is considerable slackness, just like it used to be

After the initial ascent, the more serious part of the via ferrata begins

Some segments reach category C, there are no more difficult sections

Occasionally there is also some walking on ledges

All markings have faded from the sun, I see no new ones

Once again we climb steeply upwards. Soon we will be at the highest point

From here a steep descent follows on smooth slabs. Even dry they are not the easiest, wet they are certainly slippery

First it doesn't want to yield, then it decides that the wiser one gives way :)

Fog embraces us, typical for this area. Here influences of different landscapes mix.

Numerous markers safely guide us through the passes.

Kanin shows itself again in its splendor. It looks close, but another 300 meters of ascent await us.

Little plateau, ascent, little plateau and ascent again …

The summit section is ahead of us. We catch our breath and continue …

Just a little more and we will have won :)

That's why the exit from Julije is so much more visited.

Neither one nor the other is operating. We return to the valley nicely on foot :)

Not a via ferrata corner anymore. The problem arises when some climb up via Julija, others down.

A little further we are almost alone. Ahead of us is Kaninski Vršič.

Returns on the Slovenian side across vast scree fields.

The fog persists, which suits us perfectly. Otherwise it would have scorched us like čevap.

We have to cross this entire slope and further …

Junction to the hut or cable car. We turn left.

The hut is no longer intended for hikers. It stood empty for a long time, now cavers use it.

They left it as it fell from their ass. Now they demand money from us (the state) for renovation

At the break of the slope there is a marker that leads along the hiking trail

Towards the Prevala saddle thick fog engulfs us, heavy drops require quick action …

Suddenly the heavenly sluices open and the downpour washes the atmosphere

Fortunately it was not a thunderstorm with heavy rain, the thunderer was surprisingly quiet

As it came, so it went. Above Bela peč there is already blue sky

The upper station is soon also shone upon by the sun

Pilgrims hang it over the backpack and set off on path 636

Bad weather has moved towards the Julians, we two are still enjoying the sun

The descent path is also of military origin

Oh dear, a new thunderstorm cell is forming right above Kanin

Numerous gullies. You can't pass them by without noticing them :)

In total it added up to 20 km and 1900 elevation meters

When did the lazy ones ever care? Also years ago when they didn't operate in winter-corona? Or something I don't know, but they didn't remove seats from the then-new chairlift. Consequently they were full of ice and snow. How this affects the carrying rope I won't say, just like about deliberate destruction of drive wheel at Prevala. With those people up there nothing will ever happen.

This is not the only compactor falling apart in the open. Near the one I photographed there's another with tow hook. The gas station right by the hiking trail has also collapsed.

Maybe the problem is ownership? On one side municipality, on the other CAI. Otherwise Italians also have things falling apart. Cable cars are being abandoned there too.

During winter season they take care of the equipment so it doesn't fall apart, at the same time with track setters they prepare tracks for ski tourers too. About the snowcat in the photo I don't know, but in winter there's a team up there using them.

On Sunday 16.2. we ascended on touring skis via path 636 to Prevala, from there to Prestreljenik notch. We skied down to station C and ascended back to Prestreljenik notch, from there via ski slope back to Neveja. The snowcat was in the same position as in Bagij's photo, the section between Prevala and Prestreljenik notch was 'packed' by skiers and wind, from Prestreljenik notch down to Slovenian side there were no tracks that anything was stamped.

Team member regularly posts on Instagram what's happening up there and what they're doing around the top station. I think they have PistenBully 400, this loner looks like another model.

Even if it's a museum exhibit, place it properly and label it. When you finish logging in the forest, do you stop caring for the chainsaw and winch and leave everything there until next season? That's at least how I understood your excuse for that staff; it's not just the worker's fault if the situation is like that, the management doesn't feel responsible either.

Maybe it's an open-air museum. Like the remains of the Soča front. It would just be nice if at least equipped with some plaques. Because otherwise in about 100 years our descendants at the rusted lump won't know any more if it's a snowcat or the chassis of Big Bertha... zadrega

I saw that some like the photo, but to me not at all. The glacier-snowfield extent has drastically reduced. More than 20 years ago it was all more or less under snow there zavijanje z očmi

RING around Kanin mountain range/14.8.2025/Today's tour is one of the rare ones where the path is more important than the goal. Recently I did ascent from Žaga to High Kanin (5.8.2025); during ascent the idea came to circle the entire Kanin range. At home quickly look at some maps, sum up time, check forecast and decide 14.8.2025. Start in Gozdec not far from B station (1074m), first on path to High Kanin and soon unmarked path to VBS. Under ruin 1530m, wait for sunrise and continue descent to Pl. Baban (1401m). From here few hundred meters marked to Pl. Ognjenik then again unmarked mulattiera past Pl. Globoka to Skutnik/Monte Guarda (1721m). From summit continue on path 731 to Bivak Franco Costantini (1712m) below Velika Baba/Baba Grande, follows long descent to saddle Berdo di Sopra (1258m). At saddle turn right to path 642 to Casera Canin/Pl. Kanin (1444m). Here at alpine pasture after 7h walking meet mountain guards who explain that path to Casera Grubia is abandoned and closed due to landslide, to my question how much for detour to other side they say 1h to Coritisa and 3h to Pl. Grubia. I said I'll rather try to get to other side despite landslide because too much for detour and continue hike. Turned out well but not recommend to anyone, so in 1h 10' I was on other side (1280m) on marked path to Bivak Marussich. From here everything easier ascent on path 634 to bivak Elio Marussich (2041m). From bivak fairy marked path 632 to hut Rifugio Gilberti (1850m). At hut refill well and take some reserve for drink, continue on path 636 to Prevala (2067m), from Prevala for dessert only most beautiful Krnica valley to Pl. Krnica (1252m) and to dusty car at junction paths to Kopa and Pl. Krnica (1074m). At end shake own hand look at watch finished tour 38km/2687m elevation/12h44'12", with all stops, one of many ideas successfully completed. Really today's path is much more important than goal.
