Maybe it's an open-air museum. Like the remains of the Soča front. It would just be nice if at least equipped with some plaques. Because otherwise in about 100 years our descendants at the rusted lump won't know any more if it's a snowcat or the chassis of Big Bertha...

I saw that some like the photo, but to me not at all. The glacier-snowfield extent has drastically reduced. More than 20 years ago it was all more or less under snow there .

Nice tour from near bivouac Marušič via ferrata to Vrh Krnice, short descent and along the ridge to Kanin, down Julija, if there's time then also visit Bela peč.

RING around Kanin mountain range/14.8.2025/Today's tour is one of the rare ones where the path is more important than the goal. Recently I did ascent from Žaga to High Kanin (5.8.2025); during ascent the idea came to circle the entire Kanin range. At home quickly look at some maps, sum up time, check forecast and decide 14.8.2025. Start in Gozdec not far from B station (1074m), first on path to High Kanin and soon unmarked path to VBS. Under ruin 1530m, wait for sunrise and continue descent to Pl. Baban (1401m). From here few hundred meters marked to Pl. Ognjenik then again unmarked mulattiera past Pl. Globoka to Skutnik/Monte Guarda (1721m). From summit continue on path 731 to Bivak Franco Costantini (1712m) below Velika Baba/Baba Grande, follows long descent to saddle Berdo di Sopra (1258m). At saddle turn right to path 642 to Casera Canin/Pl. Kanin (1444m). Here at alpine pasture after 7h walking meet mountain guards who explain that path to Casera Grubia is abandoned and closed due to landslide, to my question how much for detour to other side they say 1h to Coritisa and 3h to Pl. Grubia. I said I'll rather try to get to other side despite landslide because too much for detour and continue hike. Turned out well but not recommend to anyone, so in 1h 10' I was on other side (1280m) on marked path to Bivak Marussich. From here everything easier ascent on path 634 to bivak Elio Marussich (2041m). From bivak fairy marked path 632 to hut Rifugio Gilberti (1850m). At hut refill well and take some reserve for drink, continue on path 636 to Prevala (2067m), from Prevala for dessert only most beautiful Krnica valley to Pl. Krnica (1252m) and to dusty car at junction paths to Kopa and Pl. Krnica (1074m). At end shake own hand look at watch finished tour 38km/2687m elevation/12h44'12", with all stops, one of many ideas successfully completed. Really today's path is much more important than goal.

Congratulations also for the trip from Žaga to V. Kanin. In the Julian Alps there is no ascent (on a marked path and directly from the valley) to any peak that would surpass this path in elevation gain.

I join the congratulations, as the tour is truly magnificent. Between Žaga and the Kanin champion there are as much as 2230 meters of elevation difference. I enjoyed this path on 6. 9. '23 and since I joined 'The high Rosajanski path', which leads to Visoki Kanin along the ridge the whole time (six more pronounced peaks), of course it didn't remain at the above-mentioned total height.
I strongly hope that they put the cable car into operation in the foreseeable future and that I repeat the tour, as it is no longer possible to count on the hut or bivouac after the end of it for a long time.

A few days ago midweek on Kanin. From Nevenjski preval even in summer season both consecutive gondolas operate to Prevala (return ticket 18 eur).
From the starting point in the high mountain world at 2100 meters almost on the Slovenian border most head to Prestreljenik, fewer continue on to Kanin. After 45 min the path joins the described route here on hribi.net from station D on Kanin.
On the way I surprise some chamois hiding from the heat in a rock crevice above the path. Took a few photos of them...

Today alone on Visoki Kanin from Na Žlebeh via the Rosalba Grasselli via ferrata, then past Okno also to Prestreljnik. Returned to the starting point via Prevala on path 636.
To Gilbertij in the morning just along the ski slope (right steep arm, which I do not recommend when wet because of high vegetation (butterbur); better to go along the service road on the left arm). Towards the Bela peč saddle the sun appears, which really shines on me only after a long traverse at the Marušič bivouac. From the Marušič bivouac (quite crowded) the start of the Rosalba Grasselli path is almost unrecognizable, shown by red triangles. The path is very varied, the real via ferrata is only at the beginning with the ascent to Vrh Krnice (C), where SVK is highly recommended, as some parts are very airy and winding, but excellently secured. From Vrh Krnice the path is almost no longer secured and is more marked pathless terrain with a lot of airy ridge climbing and also quite a bit of exposed traversing (the path from the saddle between Vrh Krnice and Visoki Kanin namely still descends a bit and then traverses under Visoki Kanin over exposed grasses and scree). The descent from Vrh Krnice to the saddle under Visoki Kanin goes over unsecured slabs (probably can be bypassed lower on scree), which can be very unpleasant when wet. Then follows a traverse under the saddle back to the ridge, where there are cables in a few places, but also none on many exposed traverses. The ridge from the saddle to the summit is completely unsecured and is quite airy. In short, from the Marušič bivouac the path is quite airy and requires both a stable step and stable weather, as it is not wise to hurry.
The path from the summit of Visoki Kanin to Okno in Prestreljnik is without special features. The family via ferrata is completely in ruins, it is certainly officially closed, but there is no sign about it at either end (at least I did not see it). The cables are torn, in several places they are just placed on the pitons (?!), the key points with steps are still passable. From the Marušič bivouac to Prestreljnik I did not meet anyone, from Prestreljnik to Prevala and on path 636 it was quite busy, as both the gondola and the cable car are operating. Path 636 is very nicely laid out.

Bravo for the beautiful tour That via ferrata is apparently in even worse condition this year. On the PZS map it is marked as closed, but PZS is not the operator, and the sign wasn't there last year either.

But this isn't a ferrata, since there are ledges, and the cables are practically unnecessary. Some still clip into them, even though they are partially torn and just placed on the pins. Everything looks very strange, as if someone deliberately dismantled it.

Yes, by proper standards it's really not a via ferrata, but it was marketed as a family via ferrata and is listed as such in many places. That's why it's completely irresponsible that it's not properly marked at the beginning and end, so foreigners with children and self-belay kits still walk on it and rely on its suitability. It would be better to remove the signs and all the cables, currently it really looks like an intentionally sabotaged path and a set trap with just the cables attached.
