Visoki Kanin

bagi10. 07. 2024 13:39:39
Day of contrasts. The forecast was nice weather, but it wasn't so. Far from it. Wanted to go to Kanin, but didn't make it. Also far from it. All promised a lousy day, but luckily not. Far from it. Chose new goals, even weather cooperated and it became a great day nasmeh.

Here's how it all unfolded …

On path 636 from Neveja Pass we went towards Prevala saddle, border between Slovenia and Italy. Goal was High Kanin. Expected some snow patches, so had full winter gear. But didn't expect not even to reach the upper station of Bovec cable car. Lots of snow and would take too much time and energy to continue to original goal. Turned back …

Descended to Prevala and pondered between direct descent on ski slope or slightly longer but unknown to us path 636A. Chose the latter and no regrets. Unusual path on distinct remains of former sea more than met expectations. Not a classic trail, more scrambling over rocky masses full of shells and deep karsts. Most similar to path to nearby Bavha.

636A brought us to Rif. Gilberti hut. From there climbed to Bila pec saddle and further to namesake peak. Unmarked trail to it much more trodden than years ago, but still not for everyone. Somewhat harder rocky step at start, continuation exposed in places. No other difficulties. Descent same way.

Returned directly under walls of Bela peč, paradise for climbers. Countless abandoned ropes and several memorials testify to rich history of vertical walls. Saw some climbers this time too. Later path 635 turns into mulattiera, quickly bringing us to valley. Satisfied and full of great impressions we ended not so promising day velik nasmeh. More in photo story …
We park the car at the free parking lot by the lower cable car station1
On its edge we search for the start of path 636, direction Sella Prevala2
This is new. The path is cut here, the crossing trampled more makeshift.3
A little higher there is another detour, this time with some climbing inserts :)4
Path 636 is a former military mulatjera, remnants of those times are visible many places5
Appropriate to a mulatjera, the path is comfortable and even6
View of the Kanin range. Hmm, nice weather forecast!?7
At the second junction we turn right towards Prevala8
This path is also well trodden and easy to follow9
The mists become fog, the views disappear10
We are steadily higher and the surroundings become more and more high-alpine11
Some snow tongues do not bother us. After all, we are on the northern side of the range12
Still all nicely passable :)13
Prevala saddle, where the Italian and Slovenian ski areas join14
View down to the Italian side towards Gilbertiju ...15
And on the Slovenian path towards Bovec16
Also the condition of the path in the direction of Ribežnov, or rather Rombona17
We two continue towards the upper station of the Kanin cableway18
View back at Prevala19
Some steep snow tongues we bypass in our own way20
Negligence of the ski area managers. The snowcat overwintered somewhere midway to the upper station21
Snow tongues are becoming more numerous, but we rely on the southern slopes22
Hmm, there is much more snow than we expected. We go on via the bypasses ...23
This is no longer a joke. Snow is hard, terrain steep, and we haven't even reached the upper station yet24
To Kanin there are still more than 300 elevation meters and continuing would be too demanding. At about 2200 m we turn around ...25
We return along the same path and think aloud about plan B26
Upper station on the Italian side27
A short descent through the scree and we are already on the service road.28
Signpost at Prevala.29
This valley doesn't appeal to us, so we quickly devise plan C :) We go to explore the as yet untraversed path 636A.30
First we must return along the access route to the path junction. The countryside is beautiful, so it is no trouble for us.31
The supporting walls of the mulatjera are in such a state as if they had been built recently.32
From the upper junction we briefly descend to the lower one. Here the path 636A starts.33
Its character is completely different. It is not a mulatjera, it is walking on shingly rocks.34
There are also some more demanding passages …35
Slovenian presence on this side of the border :) The girls are heading towards Bavha.36
We two go in the opposite direction to the Rif. Gilberti hut. We walk among countless former sea inhabitants.37
There is practically no classic path, just more or less demanding rocky passages.38
Our new goal is Bela peč, or Bila pec as called locally.39
Gas cannon for triggering snow avalanches. The gas storage is nearby, all connected by alkathene pipes.40
View back on the path :)41
The hut looks somewhat comically out of place among the numerous ski facilities. Not long ago it was quite different.42
The military chapel is still there too. They have put up a warning notice for numerous tourists about respecting history.43
View back at the Italian part of the ski area and Prevala saddle.44
Gilberti is like an oasis in the middle of the ski area. The hut's appearance hasn't changed much.45
Even inside everything is still as it was. The staff is friendly, prices quite normal.46
After refreshment at the hut we continue towards the Bila pec saddle.47
View back at the hut and the ski slope48
We two up there …49
Touring skiers down there even in the month of July. As for Kanin we made quite the right decision :)50
On the saddle it is windy and the military building offers at least some shelter to tourists51
We are a bit curious where the skiers were messing around, but the fog is too low52
Well, there is no shortage of snow :)53
We also discovered this, about which Alessio wrote. The VDG Trail running race will be this Saturday, 13 July54
Because of the trail they even cut a path into the snowdrift. We have been encountering runners gradually all day55
Now to the backup goal instead of Kanin, Bela peč :)56
The start is well visible, the continuation however is not for everyone57
One must squeeze through the rocky jump, then the path is nicer58
We are quickly at the top. Bela peč has a central location and is an excellent vantage point59
The day did not start quite promisingly, but we are more than satisfied with the experience :)60
View down to the saddle61
On the descent we meet a Czech family with small children. Irresponsible, since the children are not even harnessed62
We are already back at the saddle, for the descent we will go left below Bela peč63
One more look towards the hut64
We will follow the narrow path right under the walls65
Here climbers feel at home, many of them66
This one has just started descending …67
Tik tak is down there. We chat a little and he says he aborted the ascent due to wet rocks.68
To many the life was also interrupted. The hut under Špik is named Po Brazzi, bad ledge.69
There are also plenty of rope remnants and they hang from all walls. Useless, but that's how it is.70
View of Sella Neveo71
Descending along path 365, which also has military roots.72
Nicely arranged landslide in the lower part of the path.73
We are already in the photo finish, just a few moments from our little horses :)74
Combined GPS track of plan A and C :). It came to 17 km and 1600 elevation gain.75

Path probably 636A?
Cable car probably already running?
Did you ask skiers where there's still snow for skiing?

Of course, corrected nasmeh. Cable car runs, but they have lunch break. Didn't ask skiers anything, just stared open-mouthed velik nasmeh.

Miri, it's not a pity just for the snowcat, those Bovec saboteurs always behave like that towards everything. All over the world I've seen that after the end of the season they remove the seats, probably so they don't burden the rope and to protect them. Here they were up there during all previous interruptions, sometimes fully snow-covered and accordingly heavy. They knew how to whine and beg for state money. This needs a real master and until it's in private hands of a responsible owner it won't get better. That incompetent municipality should rather focus on fleecing with collecting parking fees and entrance fees for Soča, for anything serious in tourism they have no clue or ideas anyway.
Bagi, nice tour, snow over the remains of the glacier under Prestreljenik and Kanin is obviously still enough to allow skiingmežikanje

Mirank, just as you wrote. Everyone knows which political party is deliberately destroying Bovec and Kanin. On the Italian side they are much more advanced and friendly to hikers.

I just remembered, when a few years ago we were driving on the gravel road towards Gozdec. And suddenly we couldn't go further, because they brought piles of sand and left it like that. They were there and said wait about an hour until they come to compact it. Because you couldn't go further with a low car. But they didn't come neither in one hour nor two from anywhere. They were on a snack breaknasmeh Think what you will.

Yesterday I went to Kanin from Resia. I started in the village Korito (Coritis), more precisely two hairpin bends below the village. Along path 642 I went to alpine pasture Kanin (Casera Canin). Right behind the hut I turned left onto the grassy ridge. For quite some time I then climbed the grassy slope. Along the path there are some faded markers and cairns, the trail is on the grassy part rarely visible. At Pod Kanin (2429m) I join the High Resian Path. I continue to High Kanin and descend via Vrh Krnice to bivouac Marrusich and back to village Korito.

On Sunday to Kanin from Gilberti hut. Gondola runs from 8.30 to 17.30, return ticket 13 eur (operating hours valid until 8 September).
Before entering via ferrata Julija there is an extensive snowfield that requires crampons.
Back via ferrata Rosalba Grasselli, no issues.

We haven't visited Kanin for a long time, so we headed there via our favorite variant, from Neveja Saddle. The intention would soon have been thwarted by morning rain, which wasn't in any forecast. Just a few minutes before parking, it stopped and a clear sky appeared nasmeh. Afternoon showers were forecast, but we hoped for the best and set off ...

We climbed to saddle Bela peč past Rif. Gilberti and continued more or less horizontally towards bivouac Marussich. There we overtook numerous visitors, then turned into the slope towards ferrata Rosalba Grasselli. Ferrata reaches C grade, cables renewed but loose in places. Lots of free climbing too, overall it reminded us most of Plemenice. From bivouac we thus reached intermediate Vrh Krnice in a good two hours and then the final goal Kanin. More visitors there, mainly from ferrata Julija direction. From Slovenian side we met no one. Once very visited peak is simply too far from the valley for average hiker. Much more easily accessible from Italy, and routes more attractive nasmeh.

We descended Slovenian side past former Kanin ski area. There immediately catch the eye abandoned and decaying machines they couldn't manage to store in dedicated garages. Sad and negligent from managers. From D station we climbed to Škrbina under Prestreljenik and then descended towards Prevala. In between a shower drenched us that piled up in few short minutes. Luckily we had all rain gear and were fine velik nasmeh. With descent we continued on Italian side and circled back to start. More in photo story …
The large parking lot above the ski lift is free. The night rain has just stopped.1
The atmosphere has cooled considerably, but for us it is the optimal working temperature :)2
We go a short distance along the road above the ski lift and soon we are on the forest trail.3
Higher there is a fork for planina Goriuda and koča Gilberti. We continue along 635.4
The roots of this path are military, like most in the vicinity.5
The famous wall of Bela peč, where many famous climbers were forged.6
Judging by the monuments, quite a few ended their earthly life here.7
Koča Rif. Gilberti, which has had the middle station of the ski lift as neighbor for quite some time.8
Due to the early hour we encounter lots of curious marmots and ibex.9
Barracks from the First War on the saddle Bela peč.10
Its purpose is now quite different :)11
This is the direction for bivak Marušič. In the background Vrh Grublje, Žrd and Col Sclav.12
Marker for one of the numerous caves characteristic of the Kanin range.13
A little further and we will be at the bivouac …14
We didn't expect it to have so many visitors :)15
They are everywhere around and not shy at all.16
The bivouac is named after Elio Marussich, an alpinist from Trieste17
The interior is clean and tidy, there are nine sleeping places18
We go back a little and turn uphill. There are no direction signs, only small red triangles indicate the path19
They are a bit dated, but still followable. They mark the Tavisoka Rosajanska pot20
Part of it runs along the Rosalba Grasselli via ferrata21
It is equipped with numerous new steel cables22
Their characteristic is considerable slackness, just like it used to be23
After the initial ascent, the more serious part of the via ferrata begins24
Some segments reach category C, there are no more difficult sections25
Exposure is high, helmet mandatory26
Occasionally there is also some walking on ledges27
All markings have faded from the sun, I see no new ones28
Once again we climb steeply upwards. Soon we will be at the highest point29
Summit of Krnica, Picco di Carnizza in Italian, 2434 m30
From here a steep descent follows on smooth slabs. Even dry they are not the easiest, wet they are certainly slippery31
View back on the section of the hiked trail above the Resian Valley32
After crossing grassy ledges it ascends again on rocky terrain33
Eye to eye with a local :)34
First it doesn't want to yield, then it decides that the wiser one gives way :)35
View of the starting point for the Julija via ferrata. There is still plenty of snow, some turn back, others continue36
Fog embraces us, typical for this area. Here influences of different landscapes mix.37
Numerous markers safely guide us through the passes.38
Kanin shows itself again in its splendor. It looks close, but another 300 meters of ascent await us.39
Little plateau, ascent, little plateau and ascent again …40
Some are a real attraction :)41
View back on Vrh Krnice.42
The summit section is ahead of us. We catch our breath and continue …43
Just a little more and we will have won :)44
At the summit. Photo provided by a friendly Resian woman.45
Mali Kanin has no visitors this time.46
That's why the exit from Julije is so much more visited.47
Neither one nor the other is operating. We return to the valley nicely on foot :)48
Another view of our ascent.49
Not a via ferrata corner anymore. The problem arises when some climb up via Julija, others down.50
A little further we are almost alone. Ahead of us is Kaninski Vršič.51
Returns on the Slovenian side across vast scree fields.52
The fog persists, which suits us perfectly. Otherwise it would have scorched us like čevap.53
We have to cross this entire slope and further …54
Junction to the hut or cable car. We turn left.55
The hut is no longer intended for hikers. It stood empty for a long time, now cavers use it.56
Prestreljeniško okno, where according to legend the devil had his fingers in it57
Former Kanin ski resort58
They left it as it fell from their ass. Now they demand money from us (the state) for renovation59
Traces of the ascent to Škrbina pod Prestreljenikom60
At the break of the slope there is a marker that leads along the hiking trail61
Towards the Prevala saddle thick fog engulfs us, heavy drops require quick action …62
Suddenly the heavenly sluices open and the downpour washes the atmosphere63
Fortunately it was not a thunderstorm with heavy rain, the thunderer was surprisingly quiet64
As it came, so it went. Above Bela peč there is already blue sky65
The upper station is soon also shone upon by the sun66
Pilgrims hang it over the backpack and set off on path 63667
Bad weather has moved towards the Julians, we two are still enjoying the sun68
The descent path is also of military origin69
Oh dear, a new thunderstorm cell is forming right above Kanin70
Finally new signs :)71
Numerous gullies. You can't pass them by without noticing them :)72
Deep vertical pits, yet another characteristic of this area73
Collapsed barracks above Nevejski preval74
The loop is completed, fortunately we were not subjected to additional showers :)75
In total it added up to 20 km and 1900 elevation meters76

When did the lazy ones ever care? Also years ago when they didn't operate in winter-corona? Or something I don't know, but they didn't remove seats from the then-new chairlift. Consequently they were full of ice and snow. How this affects the carrying rope I won't say, just like about deliberate destruction of drive wheel at Prevala. With those people up there nothing will ever happen.

Maybe the problem is ownership? On one side municipality, on the other CAI. Otherwise Italians also have things falling apart. Cable cars are being abandoned there too.

During winter season they take care of the equipment so it doesn't fall apart, at the same time with track setters they prepare tracks for ski tourers too. About the snowcat in the photo I don't know, but in winter there's a team up there using them.

On Sunday 16.2. we ascended on touring skis via path 636 to Prevala, from there to Prestreljenik notch. We skied down to station C and ascended back to Prestreljenik notch, from there via ski slope back to Neveja. The snowcat was in the same position as in Bagij's photo, the section between Prevala and Prestreljenik notch was 'packed' by skiers and wind, from Prestreljenik notch down to Slovenian side there were no tracks that anything was stamped.

Even if it's a museum exhibit, place it properly and label it. When you finish logging in the forest, do you stop caring for the chainsaw and winch and leave everything there until next season? That's at least how I understood your excuse for that staff; it's not just the worker's fault if the situation is like that, the management doesn't feel responsible either.
