Weather, weather forecast, danger...

Hi

In this thread we could debate about the weather. I'm interested whether you'll set off to the mountains for the first time tomorrow (4.7.2010), morning clear, afternoon thunderstorms—is it worth going to the mountains at all.
Normally I go from the starting point already at 6 o'clock. I get up there at 4:30.

Say, how to act if a thunderstorm catches us in the mountains, under a tree surely not, what about an umbrella, maybe some rock shelters....

Yes.nasmehnasmeh
Saturday a bit cloudy, Sunday sunny. Follow the weather forecast on TV or check it on ARSO.

The combination of both forecasts is almost winning:

ARSO is quite reliable:

If you want to see the picture from Kredarica:

If you compare RTV and POP TV, it is a disaster.

I think this interests many! So, I'd like to find out if somewhere you can get fairly accurate weather forecast for mountains, e.g. k-s alps, julians, karavanke. Most forecasts for big cities, which doesn't help me much. Probably not more accurate, or is it?

Use meteoblue (google-meteoblue-first hit-see europe and select place). I help myself a lot with it.

And also, if north wind is forecast, avoid Austrian mountains.

As seen on the webcam from Kredarica, quite a lot of snow has melted. Snow forecast up to 1500m for today, has anyone seen how much snow is expected? I'm interested because I plan a tour around 2000m in the next days. lp.

If it all holds as the long-term forecast on http://www.accuweather.com/world-forecast-15day.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&loc Code=EUR/SI/S1000/LJUBLJANA&metric=1 shows, there will be more than enough snow at season start, even for ski tourers. Hope the title works. Top of page for other cities, just type place(city) and click search or enter key. Lp

On the obtained page just type Ljubljana top left, then click 15-day forecast. Above it doesn't locate the code fully, so didn't pick right title for Ljubljana.

Me too, going a bit higher tomorrow and of course in a similar dilemma.
On the ridge or high on the clearing a storm shouldn't catch you. It's a matter of personal judgment. When it thunders for the third time and you're still ascending, you're definitely tempting fate.
So as you said: early hour golden hour.
Good luck.

I suggest reading the article:
http://www.gore-ljudje.net/novosti/56193/

I don't carry an umbrella in the backpack, but I have a poncho (rain cape) for a few €.
In mountains-high mountains usually no trees, shelters-poor or far, mainly stay away from metal things (fixed ropes etc., even trekking poles..)
From home early in the morning, because storms usually develop in the afternoon. By midday you should be near the valley.. etc.
Signs of cumulus clouds...
If the forecast is good only for the morning, choose a shorter tour (2 or max. 3 hours one way)
Monitor forecasts and weather changes all the time when possible..
Inquire and learn from others.., e.g., what fog on peaks, fog in valleys etc. means.
Yes, trekking poles are best those made of carbon fibers in this regard.
Lightning strikes sometimes even when no rain is falling. Heat, ozone etc. are also dangerous.
Rain itself is the least dangerous in the mountains.
I haven't had an encounter with lightning yet.
Today around 12 in the Julian foreland (Tosc) it looked like at least a small storm, but it didn't happen.. Still it was so stuffy that at times it was unbearable. In short—summer in the mountains is a lottery, it's good to know more about it.
I welcome the opening of the topic!

In case of thunderstorm with lightning, immediately avoid ridges, summits, tall trees (beeches), rocks from red limestone, iron (pegs, staples, ice axe, crampons), torrent beds. Safest then in car (Faraday cage—insulated from ground) or house with lightning conductor. On open ground, choose a suitable spot on flat terrain; for ground, choose sandy, scree or soil, not ground with larger rocks that have poor drainage conductivity. In case of lightning strike on a person standing on two rocks, lightning, due to delay in passing through him, damages much more. Legs in case of lightning step apart (straddle), because high voltage in case of strike on body distributes, transfers to two points on ground surface. Thus currents divide into two parts and sink into ground. Drainage resistance then smaller for step voltage Uk (bridging with legs). Lightning can be felt particularly well already in electrified air (hair and body hair standing up, rustling on iron braids etc.). Good luck in the mountains!
