Zajzera, Stone Hunter, Cold Waters

I don't know how it is from Zajzera because I haven't been there yet, but it's probably shorter because here you go almost flat for an hour. The time estimate to Prašnik saddle is around three hours, from the saddle another around 600m elevation gain, half of it nicely on a soft forest path, summit part as you wrote. With all the berry picking and admiring nature around, five hours should be more than enough, of course it can be done much faster. I don't know how long we two took because for such a tour you need to take timenasmeh The cables to the summit are loose but welcome, need to watch not to dislodge rocks and more care on descent. We didn't have safety kits, for inexperienced I'd recommend them. Really nice and good lucknasmeh

Not demanding, no, part is even on road, part on shortcuts. A couple years ago when I went through here, the path was washed out in one place, but there was a well-trodden path over the debris, so no problems there either.

More than 25 years I haven't been up there, from Cold Waters never - so decision wasn't hard because Edina wrote it all so nicelynasmeh. To not go back same way we took down (a bit doubtful) over Višarska planina and reached state road 100m from where we turned into Cold Waters valleyvelik nasmeh. From there another 400m to the car. Path marked 612 (quite faded marks but well traceable all way) branches right from ski slope track, when about 300-400m past last buildings on planina (under ski slope visible sign on pole).

Edina, is it constantly on road to Prašnik saddle (paths 618, 615 and from saddle some way 617 - on Tabacco map 19 it's drawn as road)? And, is helmet needed? Lidija Jesih writes they descended from Višarje on road, then path 617 to Prašnik saddle - is that junction visible above Prašnik saddle?

Oh Janez, in the flat part of the valley towards the head there runs a road that would be drivable without problems if there were no barrier at the start. The road then turns into a good track all the way to Prašnik saddle, from the saddle onwards along the path over the meadow into the forest. In this forest part we come upon a well-marked junction, where we turn right towards our goal, left towards Višarje. Helmet would be recommended only in the summit crumbly part of the path if someone ahead dislodges stones. Good luck on the pathsnasmeh

Today in beautiful weather to Kamniti lovec via circular path Zajzera - path 615 to Prašnik saddle - path 617 which leads to Višarje and path 613 to the hunter summit. Descent to Višarje and by road to the valley. Beautiful path, just below the summit the very loosely tensioned prusik ropes are helpful. Due to early start I walked the entire path to the summit in shade. On descent I met over 100 young hikers - for such a crowd the access to the summit was probably quite difficult. Very nice tour, especially it will be wonderful when the larches glow in autumn. For return there is another slightly longer variant: descent by road and soon (at altitude approx. 1600m) on the left visible sign for path 617 which leads to Prašnik saddle, but first quite some ascent (at least 200m) and then descent to Prašnik saddle.

The Mrzle vode valley was planned since the day Edina described her experiences on this path to Kamniti lovec on these pages. A year has passed since then, but the view of the mountains in the head of this valley has not changednasmeh. Magnificent sight that Kugy probably described as the most picturesque in the Julian Alps. Before us steep walls of Visoka polica, Lepa glava, both Lojtrici, Krniške špice and already the Viševa group. All beauties that do not agenasmeh
In front the five Lastovice, which boast a really nicely sounding name, hard to access but tempting also along the path that encircles them. Walk over the meadow under them on the way to Prašnik saddle also very enchanting. No wonder Edina named it Paradise meadownasmeh.

Circular was our path on Monday, always the most tempting one. From the summit of Kamnitega lovca, we descended to Višarska planina, where it was necessary to find the path that turns right at the end of the planina. We found the start on a stump marked 612, and a sign on a pole, but the proper path was not visible. Everything downed, everything covered. Quite some crawling underneath and over was needed, plus persistence and trust that the direction was right. And it was indeed, as we reached the road just before the village. Good tip given by mirank and we followed itnasmeh.

Predecessors' descriptions contributed to our first visit to Kamnitega lovca from the Mrzle vode valley. In the morning in the half-abandoned, half-ruined mining village under Rablje greeted us the sign *Dobrodošli v Riofreddu* nasmeh. Here we also parked the car by the neatly arranged little church at the end of the village.

Direction was clear. First along the road far left past our goal right under the edges of the mighty ones, then far right all the way to Prašnik saddle. For whole 10 km this road climbs, but by no means boring or tedious. Pleasant cool at the beginning, nicely scenic later.

Prašnik saddle is also the common point with access from Zajzera. Time estimates on direction signs should not worry you too much, their correct placement is way off zmeden. Continuation to Kamnitega lovec is pure classic. Path pleasant, scenic, occasionally exposed, cables just below summit in good condition. One more warning… lower direct branch to Višarje was closed during our visit (end of July 2020).

Descent went towards Višarje all the way to junction with ski slope, then we descended it to Višarska planina. There is a brand new sign for path 612A, exactly like at the morning start behind Riofreddo village. Funny, then except start and end nowhere any, just some ancient barely visible velik nasmeh. Obviously they intend to arrange the path, although currently not even in CAI catalogue. From what seen it's another pilgrim variant to Višarje, besides the more known from Trbiž. Path itself cleared of debris, nicely traceable and soft for walking. On descent along it we had no problems all the way to start nasmeh.

Start coordinates: 46.470630, 13.567990

hi Bagi, yes we're working on this old pilgrimage path because Slovenes from Log and Bovec valley used it already in the previous millennium for hikes to Višarje, on "catasto sentieri CAI FVG" and on our website we'll publish 612A once we finish the work (and forestry service finishes cutting), but we quickly marked the start and end of the path so no one gets lost (path starts a few meters ahead from the church in Riofreddo village; marking downhill to malga Lussari starts on path 613, before the one in pic 32 there are still 4 signs on wooden poles); there's also a third pilgrimage path "612" from Valbruna/Ovcja vas to Višarje because locals from Ovcja vas and Austrians from GAIL TAL used it, now we rerouted the last part to the path under the closed Misconca chairlift (previously it went along the ski slope), I recommend you go at least once so the track will be grassy and in the upper part very followable; soon 3 pilgrimage paths leading to Višarje were divided like this: classic most visited path 613 "sentiero del pellegrino" used by Austrians from Villach area and surroundings and people from Trbiž, Žabnice, Bela Pec/Fusine and Slovenes from Rateče onwards; current no. 612A by people from Rajbel and Slovenes from Log onwards to Bovec; path 612 by people from Ovca Vas, Naborjet and Austrians from Žilska dolina over Lom saddle or Feistritz alm; thanks to you both and others for pics of your trips so we can monitor path conditions because otherwise we can't be everywheremežikanje wish everyone nice hikes in advancenasmeh

No offense Alessio, but if the goal is "no one gets lost", isn't it logical to mark start and end of the path at the end of the work? mežikanje

On pathless routes, usually the start and end are hard to find. So they started pretty well.
Need to visit some more. nasmeh

I agree, but it's no longer pathless once marked at the start. That's why it's also dangerous. Otherwise I think pathless routes don't need marking. mežikanje

From Bagij's pics it seems this isn't exactly pathless, but quite a wide path and Alessio nicely wrote it's an old pilgrimage path that they'll now arrange and mark even better.

Story is like this: of course it's damn logical, but in this case when we started from the top then we got forestry service to cut the upper part pic 33, o.k. change plan, start from bottom (Riofreddo pic 8) to top and since in one day even god wouldn't finish next first opportunity when we get a rare solid day without rain....surpriseeek, they started cutting pic 39 in the lower partmrk pogledvelik nasmeh so at least we have start and end temporarily, then if hiker has tabacco map 019 it's drawn in black and won't get lost, if not my opinion it's right that he gets lost maybe next time he'll damn sensibly prepare for hikes, or not?mežikanje

Of course these aren't pathless. Just thinking about the similarity (difficulty) of path starts.
I hiked one, the steep one from Ovčja vas. For Mary's holiday, but my wife and I were still alone on the path despite that. Up top a crowd of pilgrims who arrived with cable car help.

Alessio, you're completely right. Once you find the start you have to be really inept to miss the path. Checked two years ago and just a good month ago againmežikanje, such a nice soft descent in the shade you won't find easily. Watery stream (at least then it was) you cross twice. Those crosses reminded me of my first ascent to Sveta gora, over half a century ago, when as kids we had to carry the cross up

Thanks Alessio for the explanation of these pilgrimage paths to Višarje and effort in arranging them. Even with us far from everything being as it should, and I speak only of officially marked paths where signs haven't been renewed for long. The mentioned descent 612A is followable and completely easy even now, even without these new marks. Greetings from our parts nasmeh ... Emil
