Ženiklovec (Veliki Javornik)

GITA15. 01. 2010 18:51:38
Already since early morning we were wondering if today's chosen goal with its 1715 m is high enough to climb above the fog that's been lingering in the valleys for so many days.
As usual on a workday, we were also short on time today, so we opt for the shorter variant and choose Gaberčev rovt as starting point for the first time. From Lom pod Storžičem through Slaparska vas and Grahovše we drive to Gabrc farm, where there's a barrier. We pay 1 Eur, cross the barrier and realize we'll need the 1 Eur coin on return too, but sadly don't have it. Luckily we meet the farm owner who kindly tells us to just ring him on the way back as he always has change ready nasmeh. We continue driving on the impeccably plowed road (worth every cent or euro). Just before Gaberčev rovt we park and continue on the path through the forest. Quickly we're at Planina Javornik. The planina is in fog, hopes for sun fading. Halfway from planina to summit finally sun through fog for first time, then bits of clear sky, more and more sunlit spruces and real winter fairy tale. At top we stay almost an hour impatiently waiting for occasional wind to blow fog away and reveal view. It happens several times but view moments last only seconds each. Whole thing was truly magical nasmeh.

The collection of the "fee for arranging roadside parking" by KS is new to mezavijanje z očmi
A few years ago I stopped going (driving) around there because farmer Pavšel closed the road with a barrier (as a private individual, not the local community). But now the road is closed at Gaberc? And how are the roadside parking areas arranged?

The photos are beautiful!nasmeh

Is there also an entry booklet with a stamp at Ženiklovec?

At Ženiklovec there is only a box without a stamp and without an entry book.... alas....

Yes, Kriška, you're right, a bit higher at Pavšel farm... sorry for the mistake. I don't know the previous situation, but from what you say I guess it's an agreement between local community and farmer since he plows it I think. About roadside parking: my husband and I were just saying good we came on a workday... From Pavšel onward there's one parking for a few cars and where we parked just before Gaberčev rovt - space for say 3 cars if parked tight...mežikanje didn't notice other noteworthy ones honestly...

Aha, one more thing. First, Kriška, thanks for the comment on the photos. Anyway, my opinion on paying various fees for roads, parking, etc.: if we have to pay for every damn thing, it's no problem for me to pay for using some forest road, parking lot, or whatever, if the amount is reasonable (as in this case) and if it means that you can rely on the road being really drivable without needing a serious off-roader for it. The Bohinj folks (with their 10 Eur for planina Blato) and others could learn something from such...
P.S. As for the inscription on the sign that it's about arranging roadside parking lots, I think it's a trick because they couldn't (weren't allowed) write it differently, so they made it up nasmeh

He, he, I don't know enough to claim anything, just wondering: maybe maintaining the road at pl. Blato also costs 1 Eur. But there are other costs: management, studies, projects, documentation, integral developments, presentation meetings, round tables, etc., etc. (devil knows there's no percentage for fundraising for the project of moving Aljaž tower to the valleyjezen)velik nasmehvelik nasmeh

For today we had planned a quick, short trip (we left the kids at home with a bit of bad conscience zadrega), but in the end everything turned out differently. We intended to drive to Gaberčev rovt and ascend to Ženiklovec from there. But since our 4x4 recently "got legs" jezen, we went with another car that has only front-wheel drive. When we had to stop because someone was putting chains on in the middle of the road, there was no longer any possibility to start moving. Nothing left but down to the parking at the quarry (Slaparska vas) and on skis. Everything is good for something, we say, if not for anything else, for fitness mežikanje. After making the track, we head straight across the hayfields, then a bit on the road, then again on the track through the forest to planina Javornik. Indescribable winter fairy tale... sparkling snow blanket as if dusted with crystals, thickly snow-covered firs illuminated by the sun... no need to list, better stop so that someone doesn't get diabetes mežikanje. Since we were quite late, the slope below the summit was already fully skied mrk pogled, as we learned later, it was already yesterday too. From the top, views "to die for"! Soon after us comes a chatty (as he later said) eighty-year-old (full of fitness and excellent skier eek), who kindly hinted to us to follow him to catch some unskied flank. I doubt he reads this, but anyway, thank you! Today we actually "tasted" for the first time the delights of turns on wonderful powder. We descended in the direction of Javorniško sedlo and further towards Dom pod Storžičem, then on the road which is now a toboggan run (lots of tobogganers!) back to the starting point. So the trip was nicely "rounded". In the end, we were more than satisfied with the "yield" of the day.

Conditions have changed since yesterday when we were up there, but anyway… maybe useful to someone as an idea or tip for an easy ski tour (also with snowshoes). Ženiklovec can't boast height, but can boast views and being a nice touring ski bump, safe from avalanches even right after snowfall (and plenty of that in coming days).

We drove as high as possible (almost to Gaberčeva rovt)… then it seemed to us we had to do some "penance" for such "laziness" mežikanjezadrega and from planina Javornik to the summit went up and down three times practicing turns in powder nasmeh… that summit flank is actually the nicest to ski nasmeh

Nice greeting mežikanje

I'm interested in what the conditions are now for the ascent to Ženiklovec from Dom pod Storžičem.

I would go on the tour on Wednesday with nice sunny weather, is the path trodden enough to go on foot without snowshoes? nasmeh

Are snowshoes needed?

Maybe a better variant to Planina Javornik from Gaberčev rovt?

Grahovše - Rekar – Planina Zgornja Konjščica – Bela peč – Planina Javornik – Ženiklovec – Dom pod Storžičem – Grahovše

At the beginning of the year, the last green but quite cold trip before the announced snowfall. We start the circular path at the end of Grahovše village and then along the road to Rekar farm, where we chat with the friendly local Stanko about farm tourism – who says that times are changing (for mountain farms here unfortunately for the worse). The path today is still dry and without special features, except in places a harder-to-follow hunter's trail under Bela peč to Zgornja Konjščica. From there onwards and from Bela peč to Planina Javornik and to Ženiklovec there was some hard snow in shady spots on the path, under Dom pod Storžičem to Grahovše the road was quite icy.
Well, tomorrow snow will whiten the green and Ženiklovec will soon be relevant again, but this time for skiing.

Yesterday (19.02.2018) late afternoon. Parked on small parking lot in Slaparska vas and continued on road to turnoff for Rekar farm. At turnoff turned right to farm, where friendly hosts told me that the right path is covered with broken trees and advised path through their clearing and onwards.

A little before Gaberčev rovt turned right from road roughly towards Javorniški preval and then fairly straight up through forest until I hit path Javorški preval - Planina Javornik. After a few hundred meters on this path again right to saddle between 1592m hill and Ženiklovec and onwards along indistinct, mostly wooded ridge to summit.

Skied same path (avoided tracks as much as possible), bypassed Rekar farm above on road since it was snowing a bit and hoped snow would cover the grit with which the road is sprinkled. No such luck, about 2 cm of new snow didn't help at all, under skis it creaked badly several times, so about a kilometer before Slaparska vas already in dark I removed skis and went on foot.

Weather was dull, with low clouds so nothing was visible at all. Snowing lightly. On top about 10 to 15 cm snow on base which occasionally broke through while skiing. Plus quite a few old, partially covered by new snow ski tracks, so it wasn't exactly whoo-hoo. Below much less new snow. Road from Slaparska vas is well plowed and salted to Gabrc and Pavšel farms or a bit further. From there onwards tractor or truck tracks.

Pictures taken on color film, only the weather was more black-and-white. nasmeh
