Zirbitzkogel (2396 m)

Print
Tadej7. 07. 2007 00:00:00
Yesterday, 7.7., we set off from the Waldheim hut to Zirbitzkogel, which is the highest peak of the Seetaler Alps (Austria, Judenburg, Zeltweg). The road to Waldheim Hütte (1614m) is free, but there is a parking fee of 2€ (parking meter). The huts around the summit are open, the snow that fell has already melted. A partly sunny but windy day offered a nice view from the top. We descended past Wildsee lake. Best regards, Esther and Tadej.

Waldheim Hütte - Fuschkogel - Zirbitzkogel.
Despite lack of snow we had another ski touring day on Saturday. From Waldheim Hütte there was a nicely snow-covered path to Kohlerhütte. Then we went a bit our own way (where there was snow), through a small snow-covered gully on the north side to Fuschkogel then along the ridge to Zirbitzkogel. On the ridge lots of grassy patches so quite some ski carrying uphill. Same way back. Descent from Fuschkogel was great, snow firm and not icy. Sunny and warm.

Zirbitzkogel... that peak which is supposedly the highest in the Lavanttal Alps, was our peak on Saturday, i.e. 16.3.nasmeh... well yeah, not just ours, it was the goal for many... both hikers and tourersmežikanje

We had planned it back in February, but it fell througheekzmeden... you know, let's go there, there, there... hehemežikanje. This time we had the plan exactly drawn; we just needed to predict the weather, and hop, up we went.

From the Styrian capital we set off quite early in the morning... and we all know those early morning get-ups are pretty toughvelik nasmeh, but in the end they're rewardednasmeh... with views of peaks lit by the morning sunnasmeh... again good for the soul... and of course for the heart. From Waldheim Hütte we started at sunrisenasmeh... not alone. Ahead of us some tourers dashed towards the summit, who had something to see up here... and it was also nice to ski. We walk on the snow-covered gravel road, which is of course well maintained and groomed by snowcat... Snow-white spruces from which freshness wafts, ice sculptures, interesting snow-wind details simply "force"mežikanjevelik nasmeh you to stop, look around, take pics... and pics... and picsnasmehjezik... If not snapping natural phenomena created in these winter conditions, snapping nearby and distant peaksnasmeh... Somewhere in the middle of the path... well I don't even know how to write this... whether it was gale-force wind or borazmedeneek... whatzmeden... I just know I've never experienced anything like it beforeeek... Air temp was already decently below zero - say around -18eek, if I add that damned wind, I could say I was there at around -30 or -40 degreesvelik nasmehzmedeneek... Added hood to my cap on head... hmm, don't even know if it stayed on, just know I was freezing from below upwards pretty much everywhere... Right cheek not to mention... icyzmedeneek.... My head just buzzes with how lucky we were to hit such windeek... Well, can't escape nature, so any "whining" or losing nerves would be totally pointlessvelik nasmeh. As soon as I stop, it's worse.... I take step by step... strong gust stops me.... can't go forward or backeek... Only stubbornness and persistence drive me on... At the chapel we snap a pic again - hehe, today when I look at pics, kinda don't know who's whovelik nasmeheekjezik.... We see the hut already for a while... peak on its left side too... I look at path and serpentines ahead... almost swear again, cause this what the wind offers is pretty unbearablezadregaeek. "OK", I say to myself, "it's kinda constantly blowing up there higher"eek. Thoughts wander to those going organized end of month to Gran Paradiso... don't wish them such conditions.... With thoughts popping in head, and slow persistent walk full of stops, I arrive at the hutnasmehvelik nasmeh.... Happy... I'm here... in the leemežikanje.... finally. Really, was pretty happy about it. Go inside... to warmth. Hut is nice, but inside kinda cold but still warmerzmeden -2eek. Radiator behind our backs nicely warms us... warms our clothes too... and toesvelik nasmeh. Food and hot tea refresh us and give us new strength. With desire for summit we head there too. Take some pics, even those with quite some difficultyeek, as wind tossed us around and pushed us into the valleyeekvelik nasmeh. At hut greet uncle Zirbit too and descend same path down... Wind already weakened a lot in upper part, from mid descent none left... nowherezmeden.... So we take time for what we didn't pay much attention to before... playfulness and enjoymentnasmeh.... Oh, how white winter is beautiful... Moments to snap, so many that you'd need a whole day for themmežikanjevelik nasmeh. At starting point of course early afternoon, as long drive home to Styria awaits.

Zirbitzkogel really gave me windjezikeekvelik nasmeh.... taught or showed me what I once wanted to experience... those conditions that really test your mental and physical readinesseek.... and of course true stubbornness, persistence and dedicationvelik nasmeh... Happy that in real winter conditions finally on first 2000m peaknasmeh... But sure I'll return here... if nothing else for longer views to surrounding and distant peaks....

On Saturday my colleague and I did the tour: Waldheimhuette - Wildsee - Fuchskogel - Zirbitzkogel - Scharfes Eck - Zirbitzkogelhuette - Geierkogel - Lavantsee - Waldheimhuette. The tour was on easy terrain, together we needed just over six hours.

At record temperatures it's definitely good to head higher into the mountain cool. With wife and younger son we decided to visit the Lavanttal Alps, where we haven't been. We chose the highest peak of this range, Zirbitzkogel, which from higher starting points has mostly easy, short and not too strenuous paths. We parked below Winterleiten Hutte, and set off on the path past two beautiful lakes. One is at the hut, the next through the pine forest a bit higher. Higher we crossed a couple of fairly dried-up streams, walked through a nice green valley, and sweated a bit more substantially towards the saddle, where we spotted our goal, which was no longer far. On the summit a gentle breeze and just cool enough to sit a little longer pleasantly. The peak seems quite visited, especially at the hut below the summit, which was teeming with people.
We discovered another nice corner of the Alpine world and it was quite hard to descend back to the heated valley.

13.6.2015 Waldheimhuette (2 EUR parking)- Zirbitzkogel - Zirbitzkogelhuette - Lavantsee - Waldheimhuette.

Direct path up is actually gravel road on open terrain (better for MTB), down past lake much nicer environment

Strong wind and summit in clouds mrk pogled nevertheless hut full of visitors
ps: Felt like flowers not yet in full bloom.

On Saturday (11.3.2017) the direct path to Zirbitzkogel was nicely trodden, snow just enough for real winter atmosphere. Shelter on the summit was open, Waldheimhütte hut too. Hikers mostly used snowshoes, but possible without.

Monday, 2.4.2018, ski touring descent

We used the wonderful day for the ascent to Zirbitzkogel and the ski descent from it. Up top there was gusty wind and that is almost the only minus of the whole tour. Almost, because in places there is barely enough snow and some caution when skiing downhill is advisable. Waldheimhütte and summit hut open, road to starting point b.p. Wonderful day in pleasant company nasmeh

Yesterday 04.08.2018 visited Zirbitzkogel again and its via ferrata and lake below Zirbitzkogelhütte. Really Zirbitzkogel gives you everything, you can climb ferrata, swim in lake at almost 2000m altitude, tons of trails and peaks for hikers, many huts and excellent offer. If you want to experience it all ONE DAY IS BARELY ENOUGH! RECOMMEND VISIT! You won't regret. I visit it every year, sometimes more times a year, never disappoints......mežikanje

Interesting and easy winter tour. We climbed this peak on 3.1.20. Starting point at Waldheimhuette, from there to the hut the path to the summit is made by snowcat. This time there was no wind either, which is usual for this peak.

Today my colleague and I conquered Zirbitzkogel. We drove to Tonnerhutte-1660m. The road to the hut is gravel. Such nice smooth gravel road I haven't seen yet. Like it was asphalted. From that hut along the panoramic path to the viewpoint, which is really beautiful. Then path across pastures along an otherwise not very nice trail. It's well marked. You go past several springs. We met cattle grazing. Below the mountain summit this trail joins path 312. In half an hour we were at the hut and summit. It was quite cold. Gloves, hat and almost jacket came in handy. The hut was open more for some tea and schnapps. We returned via winter path and continued from the panoramic path viewpoint along the left path. So we got to the starting point on the other side of the hut than we started.
