Jassing - Ebenstein (severozahodni vrh)

Access to starting point:
From the A9 motorway (direction Graz/Linz) we turn onto the S35 expressway towards Vienna and leave it at Bruck an der Mur. From there we follow the signs for Kapfenberg, then turn towards Trägoß and St. Katharein/Grüner See. After about 23 km we reach Oberort, where we turn left in the middle of the village.
From Oberort we continue past the Seehof inn, pass the Green Lake and ascend on a gravel road past Pfarrerlacke lake to the end of the valley, where there is a large parking lot Jassing. Further driving is prohibited.

Warning: The entire valley is a single paid parking zone. Since there is no parking meter at the final Jassing parking lot and intermediate points, the parking ticket must be purchased in advance at the first central parking lot in the village of Oberort (at the tourist information).

Route description:
From the edge of the parking lot where the chemical toilet stands, we follow a well-trodden forest path downhill, which quickly leads us to the gravel road along the torrent bed. At this point there is a trail junction; the direction towards the Jassing Almhütt'n hut leads straight ahead, but we turn right onto the wide transport road known as the Russian Road (Russenstraße).
The road soon takes us into the forest, where we begin to ascend transversely. At the beginning of the ascent, a path joins quite inconspicuously from the left, leading past the Jassing Almhütt'n hut. Further on we cross several small junctions, where we consistently follow the markings. The road gradually transitions to steep slopes, over which it begins to ascend in switchbacks; on certain sections it is exposed to falling rocks. Higher up we approach massive walls, where the danger of falling rocks increases somewhat, but from the path we are repeatedly offered a beautiful view of the mountains above the Jassing valley. Later we cross a gully and a landslide-prone slope, then reach the edge of the plateau where a rest bench stands. The road has several unmarked shortcuts further on, but we follow the marked road to the marked fork. Here we choose the right road (straight ahead leads the path towards Hörndlalm), along which we ascend transversely to a bend from which we get the first view of Ebenstein.
This is followed by a few minutes of moderate ascent, mostly through sparse forest, then we reach the pastures of the Sonnschienalm plateau. From here, with exceptional views, we briefly descend to the marked junction at the larger hunting hut. Here, paths to Brandstein and Ebenstein branch off slightly to the left from the road, while to the right the road continues to the Sonnschienhütte mountain hut, which is five minutes away.
We continue left and after a few steps right on the path towards Ebenstein, so that we pass the hunting hut on the left side; behind it we enter a belt of sparse forest and dwarf pines, where the path continues through a series of grassy hollows.
At an altitude of 1665 meters we reach a marked junction, where we turn right in the direction of Ebenstein; the path subsequently becomes somewhat steeper, but up to the next junction at an altitude of 1760 meters it is not particularly steep.
Here at the mountain signpost we turn slightly right and begin to ascend the gradually steeper slope of the Kleiner Ebenstein summit. Higher up the path and slope level out; when the path levels out further we see Ebenstein ahead (here a little to the left off the path is the Kleiner Ebenstein summit). This is followed by a few minutes of walking on a gently sloping high-mountain grassy plateau, where livestock often graze in summer. On the other side of the grassy section the path begins to ascend steeply on the slopes of Ebenstein, where, except for a few switchbacks, we ascend transversely to the right. When the transverse ascent to the right is no longer possible due to a precipice, the path turns left and quickly transitions to a rather steep, mostly rocky slope, where the path becomes prone to slipping; a few steps further a steel cable helps us, though it lies completely on the ground and is quite loose. Above the first cable follows another, then the protections end; we continue ascending for a short time on the steep slope, where greater caution is initially required to avoid slipping, then the slope levels out somewhat, the path turns right and quickly leads us to the cross on the south-eastern summit, where the markings end.
Before the summit we go left onto an easier pathless area or initially a poorer path is still visible, leading us northwest. Further on we ascend along a scenic ridge which, if we choose the right passages, is technically not demanding and not exposed either. In a few minutes of such walking we also reach the north-western summit, where a smaller metal cross is located on the registration box.
