Over a border crossing in Rateče we drive through Trbiž / Tarvisio, Ukve / Ugovizzo to the settlement Tablja / Pontebba, where we turn right following the signs »Passo di Pramollo / Nassfeld« (Slovenian Mokrine). On the pass, still on the Italian side, before the lake, a road branches off to the right behind the hotel towards Planina Javornik (Auernig Alm). Immediately after the turn-off, on the right side of the road, is a parking lot where we park.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we head onto a cobbled road towards the mountain pasture Javornik (Auernig Alm). At the junction of the road, which is closed to public traffic, there are also signposts. The road, which is cobbled in the initial section, ascends more steeply and then leads us through the forest. Further on, the road becomes a gravel track, and soon views begin to open up towards the surrounding peaks. This road then soon brings us to the mountain pasture Javornik (Auernig Alm), where a shepherd’s cottage is located.
Near the cottages where there is a crossroad, we continue on the right road; the left path leads towards the saddle Auernig Sattel and further towards Javornik or Krniška gora. From the crossroad, we continue on the right gentle road over the mountain pasture, which at first also slightly descends. When we leave the mountain pasture, the road crosses a short strip of forest and then descends a bit more steeply in a few turns. Further on, we start slightly ascending again, and later the road brings us to a crossroad where signposts indicate cycling paths.
We continue on the left road, which then starts ascending a bit more steeply. On the road, from which a few beautiful views of the surrounding mountains open up, we soon reach the mountain pasture V Pečeh.
At the mountain pasture, where a marked crossing is indicated, we leave the road and take footpath 501 in the direction of Kronalpe (Koren). The path leads us past shepherd structures and then continues over the mountain pasture in the direction of the east. The path then starts ascending and brings us into a slightly thinner forest, from which beautiful views still open up. After the ascent through the forest, we cross a grazing fence, and the path leads us onto less steep slopes, which are mostly covered with dwarf pines in this area.
Here, the path turns to the left and slightly ascends on the southern slopes of the mountain. The dwarf pines become increasingly sparse, and the path further leads on a mostly grassy slope. On the marked path, which is occasionally less worn, we soon reach the panoramic peak.
We can descend via the ascent route or continue towards the north and descend to the saddle Vrh Krnice on the western side of the mountain. From there, the shortest descent is to the mountain pasture V Pečeh (Italian Casera For, German Kronalm) and then along the ascent route back to the starting point. The second option is to return on the northern Austrian side of the ridge over the mountain pasture Krnica (Garnitzen Alm). The longest and somewhat more demanding path is the Auernig Höhenweg, which runs along the ridge over the peaks of Krniška gora and Javornik.
