Description of mountain:
Herman's Fortress (also known as the Upper Kluže Fortress or Fort Hermann) stands on a steep rocky ledge on the slopes of Rombon, right above the famous lower Kluže Fortress. The Austro-Hungarian Empire built it between 1897 and 1900, as the lower Kluže had become artillery-obsolete by then and could no longer control the entire Bovec Basin. It is named after Captain Johann Hermann von Hermannsdorf, who heroically fell in 1809 defending the Predel Fortress.
During World War I, the fortress became the target of intense Italian artillery bombardment from the Reklanica Valley. Despite its modern construction of concrete and iron, it suffered severe damage, so the garrison evacuated it in time. Today, its mighty ruins serve as an open-air museum and an important station on the historical Path of Peace.
