Description of mountain:
Snežna jama na Raduhi is a true underground gem of Slovenian high-mountain karst. With its entrance at an altitude of 1495 meters, it holds the title of Slovenia's highest tourist cave and ranks among the highest caves of its kind in Europe. This more than 10-million-year-old beauty offers a unique natural phenomenon: a wonderful harmony of eternal ice and rich dripstone formations at high altitude.
The true fairy-tale world inside was discovered by cavers from JK Črni galeb from Prebold in August 1981. Of the total 1300 meters of explored passages, a little over 600 meters have been prepared for tourist visits. Visitors are first guided into the impressive Ice Hall, where natural ice sculptures reign year-round. Deeper in the cave the cold eases, revealing the underground riches: from huge dripstone curtains and pools to the Hall of Pillars, which features a 21-meter-high dripstone column. The cave is also notable for the exceptional quantity of snow-white cave milk (malgonite) on the walls and finds of fossilized teeth of ancient sharks.
Thanks to its location right beside the mountain paths under Raduha, Snežna jama is an ideal spot to enhance a mountain trip to Velika Raduha or the nearby Planina Arta.
WARNING: Due to catastrophic floods and storms in August 2023 that severely damaged the entrance area and the collapse doline and caused ground instability, the cave is CLOSED to all visitors until further notice.
