Sonnschienhütte

Description of hut:
The Sonnschienhütte mountain hut stands on the extensive and picturesque Sonnschienalm alpine pasture in the western part of the Hochschwab mountain group. It is set on a scenic karst plateau surrounded by vast pastures, with the prominent peak of Ebenstein rising majestically above. The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club, specifically the Austria section (ÖAV Sektion Austria). A large outdoor terrace in front of the building offers visitors exceptional views of the surrounding high-alpine karst and nearby peaks.
The hut is an important junction of mountain trails, as the well-known Austrian long-distance trail Nordalpenweg 01 also passes by. Thanks to its relatively easy and comfortable access from the Tragöß valley, it is an extremely popular destination for family outings and serves as a key starting point or intermediate stop for more demanding tours deeper into the Hochschwab massif. The facility features a pleasant dining area, offers accommodation in rooms or shared dormitories, and is known for its environmentally friendly infrastructure. The hut has received an environmental award and a prize for its sustainable hydrogen energy system. It is open year-round, except for a one-month closure in autumn (during the deer rutting season from mid-September to mid-October).
