Description of church:
St. Michael is a historic parish church standing on a picturesque, sharp ridge in the middle of the medieval market town of Pilštanj in the Kozjansko region. The church is situated at an elevation of 375 meters and forms the core of one of the oldest and historically most significant settlements in southern Styria.
The Pilštanj parish is the mother church of all churches in Kozjansko and is first mentioned in historical sources as early as 1167. The Church of St. Michael features an exceptionally well-preserved Romanesque nave, which was later rebuilt several times over the centuries. Due to its strategic, elevated position above the Bistrica River valley, the site also served in the past as an observation post where bonfires warned of Turkish incursions.
A visit to the Church of St. Michael is an excellent choice for a family outing, as numerous cultural and natural landmarks of Pilštanj lie right beside it, including the medieval pillory (pranger), the famous century-old Pilštanj dogwood, the pagan woman, and the remains of two castles (Peilenstein and Hartenstein). The well-known Emina pilgrimage route also passes through the market town.
