Veliki Medvejk / Monte Orsario

Description of mountain:
Veliki Medvejk (also known as Medvedjak or Medvedjek; Italian: Monte Orsario) is a 472-meter-high hill northwest of Sežana (air distance approx. 3 km). The national border between Slovenia and Italy runs over the summit, evidenced by border stones on the peak itself and information boards along paths on the Italian side near the border line. On the Italian side, the hill's surroundings are part of the "Riserva Naturale del Monte Orsario" landscape park, covering the area between the border and the Fernetiči-Repentabor road.

On the summit, on the Italian side of the border, there is a small panoramic platform. Below it is a box with a logbook and bilingual stamp. Somewhat surprisingly, there are no benches anywhere, so rest is possible only on one of the many rocks. Likewise, there is no typical panorama board indicating visible features in various directions.

Except for the summit itself, the hill is almost entirely covered in typical karst vegetation. From the panoramic platform on clear days, views extend to the immediate surroundings, the Repentabor church, and with luck as far as the Alps; from the viewpoint on the Slovenian side, also to Sežana and its surroundings.

From the Italian side, the peak is reachable via several well-marked paths from Fernetiči or Repentabor. From the Slovenian side, it was closed until the "fall of the border" but is now accessible via unmarked and faintly trodden paths from Sežana or Vrhovlje.
