Idrija is a picturesque town in western Slovenia, located in the valley of the Idrijca River and the seat of the homonymous municipality. With around 6,000 inhabitants, it is primarily known for its rich mining history, as the second largest mercury mine in the world operated here from the 15th century to the end of the 20th century. In 2012, the mine, together with the one in Almadén in Spain, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "Heritage of Mercury".
In addition to mining, Idrija is world-famous for Idrija lace, a traditional bobbin lace art that is part of Slovenian cultural heritage. The town also offers other attractions such as Gewerkenegg Castle, which now houses the municipal museum, and the UNESCO Global Geopark Idrija, covering nearly 300 km² of natural and cultural treasures. Local cuisine is famous for Idrija žlikrofi, traditional potato dumplings.
Idrija combines industrial past with natural beauty and is a popular destination for tourists who want to explore the underground world, art, and picturesque surroundings, just an hour's drive from Ljubljana.
