Hi. I'm interested in which phone apps you use for navigation or orientation? I'm looking for one that's free, works offline and has hiking trails drawn in. Currently I have Locus Map but navigation doesn't work without connection.

Just to revive the topic a bit. I see many people in winter hiking in thick down jackets in the hills. I'd sweat too much. Myself in winter always start with functional short sleeve, functional long sleeve and thin functional windbreaker over. So I feel a bit cold at the start. After about 15min walking I'm already hot and the windbreaker comes off. In the backpack I have lots of spare shirts and warm fleece, but I never walk in it. I prefer the rule, better more thin layers than one thick. I'd burn up if I walked in a down jacket. How about you?

If someone hasn't noticed, the Alpine Association of Slovenia has released an app that works offline too. It's called maPZS. Go to the website and there are instructions for use. It's pretty good.

Thanks for the answers, I believe those Slovenian ones are top but too expensive for me. I'll check Decathlon. I always find something there for myself. There I bought low hiking shoes Quechua brand for 60 EUR and they are top. Comfort, robustness, sole... I also have Meindl for 200 EUR and Alpina for 160EUR, large part of life I used Planika so I can compare. Meindl is class of its own and I use them on all harder hikes. Alpina doesn't fit me at all, I use it only for mowing grass now. This Quechua shoe was bought more for fun but since then I wear them on all hikes where I don't need high-tops but low ones.

Just to revive the topic. Buying hiking pants for winter and for slightly less cold days. What do you pay attention to when buying such pants? Not specific model or brand. I mean thickness, pockets, stretchiness, sweat functions... I wore regular sports tracksuits for many years, in winter long johns under tracksuit. You can hike fine with that but I'm sure hiking ones are better for wind, sweat, deep snow and quick drying. Now time has come to buy some. Should I buy thin ones for winter too and long johns under or thick ones? Thanks

And the app has one big plus. It immediately shows your position, which is extremely important.

On my legend it says: Continuous line - hardened path. Dashed - stones, dotted - mixed between mud and stones.

Nevertheless, all those colored and dashed paths are shown to me by the app too. From contour lines I can't determine if I'll have to climb or walk on walls nor if there are cables or pegs. I walk only easy paths, no climbing, so this info is important to me. The biggest help to me is hribi.net.
For now I see only 2 advantages of paper. Great overview and battery.
And to avoid misunderstanding, I'm interested in PZS maps for phone, not paper.

Yeah but, if it doesn't show the difficulty level of the trail then I don't see a reason to have it, because OpenStreetMap shows me the trails too. That's why I'm asking what the added value of the PZS map is? I don't have it, so I'm asking.

Is it even worth buying hiking maps nowadays? To me openstreetmap hiking or some other topo map seems extremely good cartography. Only thing missing is difficulty level of paths and without prior planning you can quickly end up at some climbing wall. Don't know if hiking maps have that. Asking you, is it worth buying PZS map?

I see that most people use apps as trackers. For me, navigation somehow fits better.

Locus Map works offline but not as navigation.
yyyeb8. 09. 2020 13:21:28
How do you open plt file? Here on hribi tracks are stored in plt not gpx.
yyyeb8. 09. 2020 13:00:17
So you use others' tracks as navigation.

Please reply. Is Stol via Žirovniška and Zabreška suitable for a hiker afraid of heights? So I don't like climbing, I like hiking in mountains, physically well-prepared, only vertigo bothers me. I was e.g. on Vrtača, Oljševa, Viševnik. Those were no problem as long as I have ground under my feet and no side traverses with drops. But Stol has been pulling me for a long time.
