Many years ago I started SPP in Maribor and this year reached Matavun. For next year I plan the route from Matavun to Ankaran. Does anyone know about accommodations in Markovščina and Osp area. Can't find anything on internet. Thanks.

I don't even know which year we decided on our first major trip to the mountains. I think it was a few years before 1972, when we went to Triglav, because then we already had a camera. In those times we went hiking completely unprepared. We had no fitness, no map or camera and the weather forecast wasn't good. Very early in the morning we four set off from Tolmin. After an hour or two it started raining and we retreated to a hay barn by the path. When the rain stopped, we continued uphill. The path leads along the eastern slopes of Vodil and Mrzli vrh with views into the gorges of Tolminka and towards the village of Čadrg. When we reached the ridge, the view opened to the west, below us the Soča valley and further a completely dark sky over Italy. We walked along the ridge and when we saw how quickly the storm was approaching us, we ran as fast as we could and arrived at Planina Sleme just before the downpour. It rained as if the whole sky had burst. The downpour lasted quite a while and then suddenly stopped, because the storm moved further east across Yugoslavia. We set off again and arrived at Krn in the late afternoon. There were many people on Krn that day. The morning storm completely cleared the atmosphere and gave us views of a lifetime. From Krn the best views are to the west, we saw everything from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennine hills, across the Po valley to the Alps in western Italy and then Switzerland, Austria and Slovenian Alps. Some mountaineer named the peaks and also mentioned Mont Blanc. If it's possible to see Mont Blanc from Krn, then we really saw it. The hut keeper was also beside herself, because she hadn't seen anything like that in her whole life. I don't remember anyone taking pictures, because back then people didn't have or carry cameras to the mountains. Then night fell and lights lit up before us. I was amazed how big Venice looked more than a hundred kilometers away. The atmosphere on Krn was unique, because we all knew we had experienced something incredible. My main memory from the Triglav trip isn't even about the ascent but how shaken we were by the accident on the summit a week later. My second ascent of Triglav was 36 years later. My sisters' memory of the Krn trip is only racing ahead of the storm. I'm now the last one with memories of the incredible views from Krn where I'll return for the first time this month. Whoever was anywhere in the mountains in central Europe that day experienced unforgettable views. I'm wondering if there's anyone who remembers that day forty years ago.

In August I plan to go from Vrata to bivouac and next day to Skrlatica then home to Kriski podi. Is there water on the path and where? Water hardest to carry. Thanks.

1. Krn (view! described in another thread) 2. Kočna (on the traverse I got stuck before Škuta and when I finally climbed it after many years of attempts, I never jumped for joy and pride like on the summit of Kočna) 3. Triglav (with Aljaž tower, without the tower Triglav would never have become Triglav)

Does anyone know how the path from Kriški podi to Vršič is now? It seems to me that the path on the other side of Sedlo Planja always had snow until summer. Thanks

1. day from Vršič to shelter under Špičkom. If too little, to Slemenova špica for breakfast. 2. day to Jalovec 3. day from shelter to Trenta with visits to Soča spring, Arboretum and museum. Sleep twice in shelter under Špičkom but not allowed to bed before evening. Did this last year when elsewhere still snow, this path dry as sunny side. Early morning and late afternoon buses from Ljubljana over Vršič to coast. Same from coast over Vršič to Ljubljana. Bus times perfect for hike to hills or back home or to parked car. Good luck on path and don't fear big rain, it just cleans air and view better.

The forecast for Tuesday in August was bad weather and rain all day and then better weather from Wednesday onwards. Nevertheless, I decided to hit the trail on Tuesday from Vršič to the hut under Špik. The forecast didn't materialize and it was nice weather all day. When I arrived at the hut, there were some people, but they all vanished towards evening. The air was very clear and from the benches in front of the hut one of the best views in the Slovenian Alps from Jalovec across Prisojnik and Razor to Triglav and then Prehodavci and mountains above both sides of the Soča. Only me and two caretakers admired this view. I was surprised and proud of myself too, because I saw how much I had hiked in the mountains last year. The forecast for the next day was nice weather and lots of people were at the hut and on Jalovec on Wednesday, but the wonderful view from the previous afternoon had vanished. More than ten years ago I started the transverse trail in Maribor and every year I go for a few days. I don't just pick zigzags but go the whole trail from hut to hut. On the trail I met lots of people and it seems the best people go into nature (in Slovenia as anywhere else). One problem on the trail is poor markings: no markings at junctions, outdated markings that can't be seen anymore, very few markings with number 1 meaning transverse. Fortunately, the Triglav area is very well marked, from Mojstrana to Vršič. Unfortunately, Jalovec is already too far from Triglav. Markings are outdated and hard to see. But I saw four or five meaningless texts on rocks (triglavski has pictures of two of them). Red paint was available, but instead of renewing markings it was used to pollute the Slovenian Alps. Next year back to the mountains. Good luck to all on the trail.

The forecast for Monday in August was rain later in the afternoon, so I left Postarski dom around seven. Since someone here mentioned not seeing the branch to Slovenska pot, I was more careful but still missed it. There you exit the forest and I was admiring Bavski Grintavec and taking pics. Luckily I turned around a lot and spotted red marks on the rock and went back to the fork. First part of ascent clear, then into cloud getting thicker with height. Luckily Slovenska pot well marked, no trouble with direction. At the end fog so thick I reached summit only some 5m below when looking for next mark and saw summit log box. Past eleven already and I was first that day on Prisojnik (me first? Never happened before.) No living soul up and down. Here it says Slovenska pot from Vršič 4 hours, good estimate, I needed only 15 min more. Someone posted sign pic saying 30min from Vršič to cross and then 2 hours, total 2.5 hours. Probably for fast folks and there are many fast in hills. If sign had average time, fools wouldn't go. No one on whole path, only at end group of seven (4 adults 3 kids). From afar wondered how start so late, past 1pm. Then Czechs, only 2 adults properly dressed, others in sneakers, one lady beach dressed. Turned back to check, stopped in fog, cloud too cold for sunning probably. Bad luck is bad luck but fools should pay heavy. Whole Czech knows Slovenia free rescue and exploit it. Despite afternoon rain forecast nice day, afternoon even nicer than morning. Prisojnik summit in cloud all day.

On the "list of mountains" page four routes to Prisojnik are described and the easiest should be the Slovenian route.

Does anyone know how the conditions are now on the Slovenian route? Ice axe was mandatory three weeks ago. What about now? Thanks

matic4, from 5 hours to summit, how much do you think to pasture Zapotok and how much further to summit? If I go, will sleep at pasture and then go easier path to summit, hope that path is well marked. Thanks.

In two weeks I plan to go SPP from Krn Lake to Krn and then onwards to Planina Razor. You say and pics also show lots of snow on north side of Krn. Little snow is ok if not in steep parts. Do you think it is possible to go on that snow without winter gear? Thanks for answer.

Hi Bavarian Grintavec is very high and I am slower. Does anyone know if possible to sleep at some pasture? Looks like direct path has no more snow. Thanks
