Description: The Sárospatak Castle or Rákóczi Castle is the most valuable work of late Renaissance architecture in Hungary, the most important monument of Sárospatak. County prefect Perényi Péter began building the fortress after the Battle of Mohács in the 1530s. First, the oldest part still visible today, the Red Tower, was completed, then it was beautifully surrounded by the wings of the residential palace. I. Rákóczi György became the new lord of the estate in 1616, from then on the building lived its heyday, here the family arranged their court, from here they managed their growing estates. During the Rákóczi era in the 17th century, large-scale constructions took place according to the then fashionable Renaissance forms.
