Description: The impressive rocky peak Vyšehrad (829 m a.s.l.), geographically belonging to the Žiar Mountains, is known primarily for its rich history. Rising at the boundary of Ponitrie and Turiec, it was a strategically important site from which an important trade route across Europe, the so-called Amber Road, could be controlled. It is no wonder it was settled since prehistoric times. During the Great Moravian period, a fortified settlement spread on its summit plateau, representing a significant power center of the region (locals even say that St. Methodius was buried here). Even in the Middle Ages, smaller wooden fortifications operated on Vyšehrad. Remains of ancient defensive structures can still be discovered today with careful exploration. Vyšehrad peak is considered one of our most important archaeological sites. In addition, it is a popular tourist destination. Its summit area was declared a national nature reserve. Rare forest-steppe vegetation and numerous protected insect species are found here. A magnificent view of Turiec and the upper part of Ponitrie opens from the summit. An educational trail dedicated to history, archaeology, and the natural conditions of the area runs through the locality.
